Welcome to the Verwalterinnenhaus—a carefully restored historic building in the heart of the Werben Commandery. The complex dates back to the 12th century and was expanded over the centuries. Today, it bridges the past and the present in a unique way: sustainably renovated, thoughtfully designed, and nestled in one of the most beautiful and peaceful landscapes in northern Germany.
A House with History—Reimagined
The Verwalterinnenhaus stands like a tranquil anchor in the centre of the Komturei. Every brick tells a storey, and yet the whole space feels open, bright, and contemporary. A simple principle guided the renovation: Preserve what is sound. Renew what is missing.
Original windows were restored, historic roof tiles were reused, and old brick walls were exposed. New elements—dormers, balconies, and precisely placed architectural additions—blend into the historic fabric as a modern layer.
The choice of materials follows the same philosophy: breathable, eco-friendly, and healthy for living. Hemp-lime, wood-fiber insulation, and cement-free lime screed are combined with reed ceilings, clay, and lime plasters. The result is spaces that feel both grounded and uncluttered—rustic and modern, warm and bright.
The energy concept includes a rainwater cistern for the garden and toilets, as well as a heat pump powered by 100% green electricity. This ensures that your stay is not only comfortable but also environmentally friendly.
The Apartments
Inside, you’ll find six unique apartments, each with its own character:
two apartments on the garden level with direct access to the courtyard,
four more on the mezzanine and top floor—all with a balcony or terrace and views of the greenery.
Throughout the building, exposed historic elements meet modern amenities: restored clay walls, exposed brick, the old barrel vault, and modern bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces. A place where you arrive and immediately find peace.
Sauna in the historic vaulted cellar
A special highlight is the communal sauna in the building’s old vaulted cellar. Use of the sauna is included in the rental price.
Daily shared opening hours (no reservation required):
7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Here, history and relaxation come together: A private entrance leads to the vaulted rooms featuring a relaxation area, a shower, and a wooden sauna with a glass front. From the lounger, you have a direct view of the old masonry—a unique experience, especially on cool days. The polished lime screed with underfloor heating provides cosy warmth in winter, while in summer it remains pleasantly cool behind the massive walls.
Yoga mats are provided—the relaxation area is ideal for a gentle morning or evening practice.
Additional private time slots can be booked flexibly as needed; outside guests are also welcome.
Werben—small, historic, unique
Werben is Germany’s smallest Hanseatic city—yet it feels like a whole world unto itself. Here, history meets a remarkable cultural landscape:
right on the Elbe Cycle Route,
surrounded by the historic Altmark region,
nestled within the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve.
The floodplain landscapes shape the light, the atmosphere, and the natural sights: storks, wild geese, wide-open skies, and quiet dikes. Here, there are no overcrowded attractions and no event season—just the natural cycle of the year, which feels organic and invites you to simply go with the flow.
Werben is small but welcoming: short distances, a vibrant area, and historic buildings that are lovingly maintained. The multi-award-winning film “Sonne schauen,” which was shot here in the Altmark, captures exactly this feeling: the tranquility, the light, and the unpretentious beauty of the region.
A place to take a deep breath
Whether you come to bike, walk, read, work, or slow down—the Verwalterinnenhaus offers the ideal setting. A house steeped in history, built to modern standards, surrounded by nature you can hear and feel.
We look forward to welcoming you here.
