About this property

Traditional Hawaii Beach House

Twenty nine miles from Kilauea with a view of Mauna Kea on clear mornings and the Pacific Ocean visible across the street. You will hear the ocean, birds and frogs. We are located in a residential area with street noise in the daytime from people visiting the popular neighborhood beach parks.

We share our clean and comfortable home for you to enjoy your trip to Hilo and the Big Island. We offer the vacation home experience you are seeking. The house was originally built in 1936, over 20 years before Hawaii became a member of the United States.

We have installed AC in the living room in May 2022. One of the bedrooms still has a window AC for those who need a little bit more. Opening the many windows and enjoying the fresh ocean breeze satisfies most guests. Our home was originally built a long time ago but it is modern while maintaining the character of a traditional Hawaii beach home. You will see geckos on the property and see the ocean horizon and birds from our picture windows. We almost always see sea turtles at the nearby beaches. It's best to drive to the beach first to ensure you are comfortable with the walk, especially if you have children with you.

We offer 2 bedrooms and 2 baths with an office/library in our ocean view home with great snorkeling beach access. The beaches usually have calm waters, excellent snorkeling conditions, shade, tide pools and green sea turtles and are all just across the street with a short walk. We are a short drive to water falls, botanical gardens, Volcano Park, restaurants and shopping.

Great place to stay in Hilo
Beautiful location. House was bigger than expected, and exceeded expectations overall. Beautiful views of ocean from living room and kitchen. Well equipped with cooking supplies, towels, etc. Only thing missing was a grill. My mattress could have benefitted from a topper, but master BR bed and bathroom were really nice. We really enjoyed our stay here and would stay again!

Beautiful, comfortable, traditional Hawaiian home
This is a beautiful, traditional Hawaiian beach home located on a large private lot, with easy sheltered parking. It is wood panelled throughout, painted in warm tones. It's very airy, with lots of large windows, ceilingings over 9 feet high, and an overhead fan in each room. The aesthetic is uncluttered and peaceful. There are architectural details everywhere, on the walls, ceilings, and tiled bathrooms, making it a very pleasant space just to be in. The kitchen is large, and a pleasure to cook in.

Lovely house
The house is charming and so comfortable. Just wish we had longer to stay. We used it as our hub for Volcanoe Park. Carlsbad Beach just a short walk away is amazing. Thanks

Lovely home, great location
Marin and Scott have a charming and lovely home, which was very well supplied. The location was wonderful, and their guest book had great information and suggestions for our stay on the Big Island. Communication with hosts was easy, and we would love to return!

About the host

Host profile image
We are the proud hosts of the traditional Hawaii house. We offer our home as occasional vacation rental while we finish our careers in healthcare on the mainland.

Why they chose this property

On our first visit to Hilo we visited Richardson and Carlsmith Beach Parks and never wanted to leave. The beauty of the lava rock wall, the character of the home and location were impossible to resist.

What makes this property unique

There are large yards in front and behind the house with fruit trees. There is ample onsite parking and a security fence in front for your privacy. This house is in the unique area of Hilo with walking beach access for swimming and snorkeling. The location provides cool ocean breezes from the front and mountain breezes from the back of the house.
