About this property

Historic Mid City Home on Streetcar route

Welcome! The Okra Inn is a beautiful historic camelback cottage located in the lively Mid City area on the Canal Streetcar line, a quaint, direct ride to the French Quarter. The art-filled home features 11 foot ceilings throughout, original pocket doors, beautiful crown molding, two living rooms, two dining rooms (with seating for up to 16), three and a half bathrooms, a front porch, back balcony, and back patio.

The decor strives to be a cozy, funky version of classic New Orleans, with kitsch alongside original art, elegance alongside a feeling of homey comfort. We want the house to be clean and pleasant, but without a sense that guests should be afraid to touch anything.

We strive to be pet-friendly, though we ask that you inquire before booking if you are planning to bring pets.

Living area includes:
* 5 bedrooms
7 beds (4 queens, one full, two twins)

Family Reunion
We housed a total of 22 family members between the 2 properties we rented. The Mid-City location was close to everything. The properties had all the charm of the old shotgun style houses typical of New Orleans.

Loved this property
Lindsey’s property was perfect for our large group. With 6 bedrooms and 3.5 baths it was a perfect accommodation for all of us. Beds are really comfortable and bathrooms are clean. We rented the whole house and enjoyed having access to all the space her house provided. Great location being so close to restaurants and bars and a Walgreens is a stone throw away if you need anything. Lindsey was a great host and a was willing to accommodate our check in and check out times and checked in to see if we needed anything. She also had some really wonderful suggestions on dinner and what to do in the area. Definitely check out Katie’s just 4 blocks down, best charbroiled oysters. The noise level was mild with it being closer to some bars but only if the patrons were being extremely rowdy, you couldn’t hear the noise in the rooms at the back of the house. The street car is very close and easy to use, Lindsey gave us great advice to download the app which made buying tickets easier. It’s not a very long ride and does have AC. I would definitely come back k and suggest this property to any large groups visiting NOLA!

About the host

Host profile image
We're Lindsay, Adam, Penny and Ringo. Lindsay and Penny are fifth and sixth generation New Orleanians. Adam moved down to New Orleans in 2014 from Iowa to get away from the winters and eat better food. RIngo is a dog. Lindsay started The Okra Inn in 2014 and it has grown into a family business with two locations.

Formerly Lindsay co-owned a wetlands educational tour company called Louisiana Lost Lands Tours--which takes guests into the wetlands on kayaks and motor boats to teach them about coastal erosion and show them the beauty of the coast.

Adam's resume is one of the most interesting around. He is a former high school English teacher, over the road truck driver, union organizer, and relay assistant for the deaf. He enjoys reading, playing too many hours of computer games, watching sports and cooking very delicious food.

The Okra Inn isn't your average listing. It's a cozy lodge, providing a great spot for travelers to rest after exploring our amazing City. We also work with local artists to have their art on display to increase their exposure. And The Okra Inn is a work in progress- trying to figure out the logistics of becoming a greater resource to the community.

Thanks for looking us up. If you'd like more information, shoot a message.

We look forward to having you!

Lindsay, Adam, Penny & Ringo

Why they chose this property

Mid City is the heart of the city! Hop on the streetcar and enjoy a short, quaint ride (for $1.25) to the French Quarter anytime, day or night. As well as the Quarter, Mid-City is a good spot to access the rest of New Orleans' memorable neighborhoods such as Uptown, Treme, and the Lakefront.

Or enjoy all that Mid City has to offer. We are within ONE MILE of:
More than 50(!) locally owned restaurants, including Parkway Bakery and Tavern (probably the world's best po'boy shop)
More than 15 bars (including three music venues)
Five coffee shops
Three grocery stores and two specialty markets
One very large beautiful park (City Park, which is larger than New York's Central Park!)
One art museum (The New Orleans Museum of Art)
One sculpture garden (Sydney and Walda Besthoff Garden at New Orleans Museum of Art- it's beautiful and free!)
One bayou (Bayou St John, the only one in town)
One famous beignet stand (Cafe du Monde in City Park, open 6 AM-midnight)
One famous Italian bakery and gelato shop (Angelo Brocato's - and they bake everything in a little house next to ours, it can smell great!)
One beloved sno-ball stand (Pandora's)
One accessible swimming pool (The Drifter Hotel)
One Hurricane Katrina Memorial
Kayak and paddle boat rentals (On the Bayou and in City Park)
Great examples of New Orleans' famous above-ground cemeteries

Y'all are going to love it!

What makes this property unique

New Orleans is a City for stoop sitting and chatting with neighbors and passerby's. One of my favorite recommendations is going around the corner to the seafood market and buying a few pounds of crawfish or shrimp and sitting on the porch with some beer. In the evening time they'll be plenty of folks on their way to the popular Venezia's and Angelo Brocato's down the street. It's a great way to people watch and even meet some locals. The New Orleans tradition is to do this in a laid back and respectful way-- the friendly neighbors do react to loud parties.

Getting Around
Located one block from a major streetcar stop, you can see the streetcar route from the front porch. We're a 15 minute ride to The French Quarter and Central Business District. We are a 5 minute ride to City Park (or 15 minute walk), and a 5 minute ride to New Orleans' famous above ground cemeteries. Blue Bikes offers bicycle-sharing that allows for pickup and drop-off throughout the city, and has a kiosk within a block of the Inn. Parking is on-street but there are almost always spots available within a block or so of the Inn. Uber and Lyft operate in New Orleans as well as traditional taxis. And if you really want the fun way to get around, you can always hire a party bus...
