Trott cabin's history:
This cabin was built by Otto T. Trott, M.D. who was co founder and physician of Mountain Rescue of the U.S.A and Ski Patrol doctor at Mt. Baker for 44 years. Dr. Trott was also an original organizer of the National Volunteer Ski Patrol. He was a famous diagnostician, surgeon, epidemiologist and tuberculosis expert and his teaching lectures are still being used today in hospitals and Universities. A ski run "Ottobahn" is named in his honor.

Life in the Forest

This cozy, clean, and solidly built cabin is an ideal location for a ski trip to Mt. Baker. Well appointed kitchen, host even supplied ground coffee for the coffee maker. Lovely living room space with all you need to build a fire. We enjoyed the old school receiver, speakers and CD player, great collection of old CDs. Internet was quite serviceable for our needs. You are truly in the forest here with no evidence of neighbors although you are just a couple minutes from the local bakery. Really could not ask for a better situation for our group for the long weekend!

Beautiful, private and clean

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at the Trott Cabin!! We definitely want to come back and stay another time! What a perfect and peaceful place for us to just unwind in this majestic, private place! Renate is amazing to communicate with! We loved reading about the history of her dad! Skiing, snowboarding, hiking or just want privacy and a lil getaway … This is the place to come! Thank you so much for the memories with our son and daughter in law! Tina Riggins

Lovely Forest Preserve With Awesome Views!

Me and my guests just completed a wonderful trip to this delightful forested preserve of a property. It was cozy and inviting, with comfortable beds, piping hot showers in demand, and a gorgeous view of Church Mountain. We cooked delicious meals together with a full kitchen, and played on the large rotating Scrabble board both nights. We could have watched some fun looking titles of the film selection, but had too much fun just playing and reading. It is great to have good reading lights above each bed. We discovered the long railway easement road across the highway opposite the cabin which takes you through a lovely moss covered walk all the way into Glacier, where we enjoed a muffin and coffee at the Wakenbake Bakery and Cafe. The helpful signs the host put up gave us good instructions about how best to manage this lovely secluded cabin in the woods. And it was SO quiet, we could hear owls!

Great Family Cabin in Glacier

We really loved this cozy cabin! It has a gorgeous view, is situated on a large property, and only a couple minutes to get to the amenities in Glacier. We loved learning about this cabin's history and the life of Otto Trott. I stayed up one night until 1 a.m. reading the book about him at the cabin, made by what appears to be one of the family members. Such an interesting person and the book is a wonderful tribute to him and a true labor of love! The cabin had all of the amenities we needed and we appreciated that it's dog-friendly. The do wish I had known that the cabin is situated right off the Mt. Baker Highway. While it still feels private, you can hear the traffic and we did need to worry about the dog and make sure he was always well supervised outside and didn't wander near the traffic. I was hoping the dog could have freedom on the property, so may have chosen a different place to stay if I had known this. It would be helpful to mention in the cabin description. Despite that one issue, overall this is a wonderful place and I highly recommend it!

Great setup. Wish we had more time to enjoy longer.

Nervous contacts from owner months before rental detracted from pleasure. Instructions everywhere caused us to never forget we were usurpers. I do understand there is a need for accountability, but we also had the need to relax. Instructions for wifi on fact list not accurate . Power lost morning of leaving...no instructions regarding this....no contact numbers. Our holiday was lovely but this is not a cabin to relax in.

Pefect for ski getaway

Our family loved staying at the Trott cabin for our short ski vacation at Mt. Baker, and we'd love to come back again. Even with the challenge of a 24-hour power outage which affected the whole area on the coldest day in a long time (low single digits!), we had fun, thanks to incredible communication/support from the owners and their well-prepared supplies of water and firewood. We were so glad not to miss our two bluebird days at Baker, using the cozy cabin as a home-base. The house is very clean, well-organized, stocked with everything you need, and full of little creative and historical touches. We had a great time!

Serene Forest Retreat

This family cabin is located off of a mountain highway, but set far back on the property with clear views, and surrounded by giant old trees, ferns, thimble berry bushes, and numerous other native plants. The air smells so sweet and clean, and the relaxation that comes from looking at that much lush greenery is significant. Inside the cabin, you’ll find anything you need for a comfortable stay, plus an excellent set of 3 foot tall, old school speakers. We’ve stayed at the Trott Family Cabin numerous times, and I always look forward to listening to their CD of Fleetwood Mac. We recently stayed during a mini heat wave, but temperatures at the cabin were consistently 20 degrees cooler than out on the road, and it cooled down to the 50s at night. This place is an authentic gem, family owned with lots of personality and love.

A beautiful cabin in a peaceful setting

We enjoyed clean, comfortable accommodations, just the right size for our group of three adults and two dogs. I appreciated that the kitchen had everything needed to fry bacon, grate cheese, whisk eggs, peel potatoes and bake cookies. We came in late January, expecting snow, but just had enough to be pretty. We played games and drank wine by the wood stove. It's unanimous: We would visit again. This home-away-from-home is a beautiful place for an annual refresh and recharge.

Absolutely perfect.

We fell in love with this cabin the moment we stepped in. It was charming, cozy, comfortable and had everything we needed. The property is beautiful, massive trees and mountain views everywhere, and the hosts couldn't have been friendlier or more accommodating. We were there in January, enjoyed bluebird weather and went snowshoeing and hiking, but we can't wait to come back when it's raining for days so we can just sit and read by the fire. An absolutely perfect place.

Lovely property, well situated just west of Glacier, WA

Lovely property, well managed. Upstairs master bedroom with a great view, and a balcony. The remaining two beds are in the large loft/landing just outside the master, as is the upstairs bathroom. So, occupants of main bedroom must walk through loft to use the bathroom. Full bath downstairs. Well appointed, including the kitchen, living room and bathrooms. Beautiful wetlands below the property, but only accessible by scrambling down a steep hillside. A short distance from the highway, so you can hear the cars when you are outside, but not too bad. We had a good time and would stay again.

Tranquil getaway cabin, and dog-friendly too!

This mountain cabin was very clean and well-maintained. It's situated on a beautiful lot with many large trees, as well as the view and sounds of a nearby wetland area. It was equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The cabin is located within a short drive to many great hiking spots in the area. There's also local bakery in town that was well worth a visit. The cabin owner was very communicative and responsive during the reservation process, as well as when we needed to exchange information prior to our stay. Definitely Recommended!

About the host

Host profile image
This cabin has given me intimate access to the natural beauty of the rainforest. Sharing it with new guests makes it more meaningful because it has such a positive impact on everyone who visits. This property is magical, wild and unspoiled.
I am one of the daughters of the late Otto T. Trott M.D. who was a Mt. Baker Ski Patrol physician and co founder of Mountain Rescue. Seattle Mountain Rescue just celebrated the 75th year anniversary honoring the three founders. Dr. Trott was an early founder of the national ski patrol as well.
I volunteered as a ski patrol at Mt. Baker, as did my entire family. I learned to ski when I could walk and enjoyed deep snow falls in the 60's and 70's. Our family had a cabin for 25 years up at the ski area before it was developed and we had the entire place to ourselves most of the time. It was so beautiful in the old days and full of wildlife and clean clear lakes and streams you could drink from.
Now my husband and I maintain the rainforest property for wildlife and our guests in the newer cabin near Glacier. I hope you will enjoy this historic, rustic and charming cabin with views of Church Mountain, giant cedars and wild berries. This cabin is in the banana belt which is why Mt. Baker gets record snow falls. The weather off of the Straits of Juan de Fuca also keeps the rain forest lush and green throughout the Spring and Summer.

Why they chose this property

My family used to have a cabin at the ski area before the area was developed. The old cabin at the ski area was built onto the dressing room used in the movie "call of the Wild" with Clark Gable and Loretta Young. We had the cabin for 25 years and when the state government tore it down we built another cabin in the town of Glacier because we were an active ski patrol and ski instructor family, especially my father, Dr. Trott who was needed every weekend to attend injured skiers, climbers and other mountain disasters. It is a shame that it was not preserved as a museum because it was so cool. We had to dig stairs down in the deep snow ( 40 feet ) to reach the door to the cabin. Back then there were wolves, bear, cougar, marmots, martins, owls, ravines and all kinds of mountain creatures. It was heaven.

What makes this property unique

The property has lovely mountain views, is totally private and in a large intact rainforest. When you visit this place it feels like the world is far away and the peace and natural beauty creates relaxation. Sometimes wildlife will visit and leave a variety of animal prints after a fresh snowfall. I love spending Christmas and New years at this cabin. The views of Church Mountain are breathtaking in all seasons.
