Spacious, light and beautifully renovated. A home from home for the discerning.
The living room has comfortable sofas and chairs. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The crockery and glassware are of a very high standard. From the kitchen, walk through double French doors onto the terrace which has a dining table for eight. There are easy chairs with bright cushions. A fantastic barbecue, too. The bedrooms are of an equal size and entirely private from one another. Each has it's own beautiful bathroom. La Sucre is in a very quiet position and is totally private. It has lovely views over the rooftops towards the abbey.

Le Sucre is a lovely property, located right in the centre of the old part of Caunes Minervois. It’s beautifully furnished, comfortable and really well equipped. Ingrid is a wonderful host - she even offered to pick-up groceries for us because the local store would have been closed when we arrived. I highly recommend it as a base for exploring the Minervois region and hope to return soon!
This beautiful home is even better than the photos. It's situated in a beautiful, quiet town, 20 minutes from everywhere including Carcassone, Minerve, hiking, historic places and lovely food. The house has been lovingly rebuilt and decorated. The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need to cook some beautiful meals. The living areas are very comfortable. The two bedrooms are virtually suites with plenty of closet space and huge bathrooms. Perfect for a long or short stay. Ingrid was an amazing host, always within reach when you needed something. Thank you, Ingrid and Christopher for your generous hosting and your kindness when I was injured. A beautiful month in Caunes Minervois. Would highly recommend!
Highly recommend La Sucre. The house is so comfortable with an amazingly well equipped kitchen and the terrace is just beautiful. This was my third stay and will not be my last. Thank you Ingrid and Christopher.

A holiday treat
Spacious, modern accommodation over three floors. The living/ kitchen and outdoor space is simply luxurious. The furnishings reflect the owner's artistic style, it is also very well organised and very comfortable. It's a great place!
We had a marvelous time at LaSucre. The house was everything we could have hoped for: spacious, inviting and quiet. Ingrid was the perfect hostess; her emails were precise and clear and our questions were always answered quickly. She had many wonderful suggestions and we really had the perfect holiday. My husband and I cannot wait to go back again to this wonderful place!
We had a lovely relaxing stay in beautiful Caunes Minervois. The hosts, Ingrid and Christopher were so accommodating and thoughtful, even purchased groceries for us before we arrived. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Wish we were back there enjoying the evening sun on the lovely terrace. Five stars

Home away from home
The home was clean and very spacious. We enjoyed the comfort of the home with large bedrooms and baths. The terrace was a great place to enjoy meals. The kitchen was well stocked with basic supplies. Ingrid could not have been nicer or more helpful.
The village was easy to navigate and Ingrid's recommendations were on target.
If you want a peaceful holiday in a gorgeous apartment this is your place. This is the second time in this village, and staying in one of Ingrid's properties and I can't say enough nice things -- just wonderful. The apartment has everything you need, the shops in the nearby city have the best produce and groceries at a very reasonable price. There are activities to entertain you or it is just a perfect place to hang out and read a book. 5 stars!
The house had everything we needed, was beautifully presented and very comfortable.
The terrace is unique in Caunes for a house in the middle of the village. We spent many hours sitting on it enjoying the sounds of the village and the Abbey bells.
It was lovely to step out into the medieval streets.
Our hosts were excellent and very welcoming. I hope we will meet again.

Wonderful property
This is a wonderful house - clean, quiet, comfortable, spacious, welcoming, well equipped. The owner was very helpful and responsive before and during our stay. Caunes is an interesting town in itself and makes an excellent center for exploring the surrounding areas. We would return to this property (or any of the others owned and renovated by Ingrid) in a heartbeat - and would recommend it to friends without hesitation. We've rented a lot of properties in France, and this one is the best.
Ingrid and Christopher are wonderful hosts. Christopher actually met us to lead us to this beautifully renovated medieval property. As other reviews have mentioned, the kitchen is great - absolutely the best we have encountered in our travels! The rest of the house is equally good, comfortable for hanging out - both indoors and out on the expansive terrace. And the beds are very comfortable too.The village is totally charming with excellent restaurants (don’t miss L’Atelier), a great Boulangerie and a nicely stocked grocery store. We can’t recommend this rental highly enough, it deserves more than five stars. We will definitely be back.
This lovely, atmospheric house is carved into the rocks of the town ramparts and the cool stone interiors provided a blissful respite from the heatwave outside. The covered terrace was idyllic in the mornings - you can drink your coffee while watching swallows swoop and whirl over the adjacent rooftops - and the house was extremely well equipped, immaculately furnished and brimming with lovely touches, including plentiful bookshelves.
We absolutely loved our stay and found Caunes a great base for touring the area as well as a pretty town in its own right. It’s not possible to drive right to the door of the property but that’s part of the charm of the historical location and we had no problem finding free parking spaces nearby. We’d love to return one day.
Last year was our first visit to Caunes-Minervoir and we stayed at La Sucre mid-May-early June. We liked it so much, we booked it again for this spring. The house is truly marvelous and was everything we remembered. While the weather did not cooperate this year (a lot of wind, rain, and cool temperatures) we couldn't have been in a better location. The house is quiet, well equipped with comfortable beds and equally comfortable living area furniture. Fabulous pizza place in walking distance as is a stellar restaurant L'Atelier. We had meals in frequently, given the weather and the kitchen provided everything we needed to make lovely meals with marvelous French ingredients. The thrice-weekly markets in the centre of town provided fresh herbs and vegetables, and fabulous quiches. Ingrid and Christopher are so welcoming and helpful - marvelous hosts! We have visited France over 20 times in the past 25 years and have never returned before to a holiday home. We are already thinking of booking La Sucre for a third time!

WELL APPOINTED GITE WITH GREAT TERRACE
When you read the description of the gite, please believe every word! In actual fact the place is even better than the description and the accompanying photos.
It is a very well organized, clean and well appointed gite
We never even used the kitchen. It has a plancha as a barbecue and what a revelation it was to use. We had fish, crevettes, calamari, pork and lamb chops, sausages, bread coated with olive oil toasted on the plancha. Even mushrooms, peppers and more prepared on the plancha and it was great.
I can go on for quite a bit, but sufficient to say that it was a very good find and we enjoyed our stay even though it was unbearably hot during our stay.
Absolutely wonderful. I won’t repeat the other glowing reviews — just add my AMEN! to those comments and add: if you love cooking, make sure you take a look at everything offered that I’ve not seen in a rental before: knife sharpener, measuring cups, an immersion blender and good quality pots and pans, including a Le Creuset casserole. The local market includes a Quiche truck with the BEST quiche I’ve had ever.
The area of France is marvellous and we so enjoyed our hikes in the countryside.
We have rented over the last 25 years 20 or so places in France. This has been the best and we are talking about coming back next year.
Thank you so much Ingrid and Christopher.
I can't recommend this lovely property strongly enough. It's not often that you book and stay at a property that exceeds expectations but la Sucre did just that. The photos do not do it justice. It was by far the nicest we have stayed in; incredibly functional and well-equipped but stunning and full of character. AND located in the most picturesque village ever! We used this home-away-from-home as a base for our week-long exploration throughout the Languedoc/Roussillon area and it was perfect. Ingrid and John were excellent hosts, providing us with a lovely welcoming basket of fruit and bottle of wine, showing (not just telling) us where to shop for supplies and answering any questions we had. One lasting memory of our stay is our morning walk to the village boulangerie through narrow, winding cobblestone streets to purchase fresh croissants for breakfast to be enjoyed on the outside ‘terrace’. We would not hesitate to return and stay again.

Sweet La Sucre
Cold day in February and I am remembering our wonderful vacation in Caunes Minervois last September at La Sucre. I feel guilty I have not written a review sooner, for our experience was superb. Maybe I was trying to keep this gem a secret! Ingrid was the perfect hostess, a lovely lady with a professional attention to detail. Her extraordinary style sense permeates throughout this enchanting rental in a quiet corner of France. We loved this village with its rich wines at inexpensive prices. The grape harvest in September gave us an aromatic and colorful glimpse of village life. There was always plenty to do with short day trips to other nearby towns and plenty of delicious food either from local restaurants or cooked in the La Sucre well equipped kitchen. I could go on and on about the village Cafe or the corner grocery store that totally enamored us, but if I say too much next time we want to rent this magical home it will not be available. Perish the thought!

Christmas In Caunes Minervois Hideaway
This was our first Christmas holiday away from home and we found La Sucre to be a very charming retreat. The cottage has been imaginatively renovated over 3 floors and is fully equipped with just about everything you could possibly need. It is worth mentioning that this is one of the few places in which it was not necessary to run the entire kitchen contents through the dishwasher on arrival. Everything is very clean, spotless in fact which is not the case with many holiday rentals. There were plenty of large fluffy towels in both bathrooms along with extra bedding and light throws to keep off the odd chill. We really appreciated the satellite TV with dozens of UK and US channels compared with many places which only have the news. There is also a very useful selection of condiments and essentials to get you started. Our host Christopher gave us a warm welcome and was close at hand for any problems of which there were few. There was also great communication with Ingrid during the booking process, very patient and informative.
The wood burner gives off a lot of heat and really kept us warm, the wood can be picked up cheaply from the Bricolage or most supermarkets. Caunes is a friendly little village with a varied selection of eateries to suit most tastes and budgets. Over Christmas not everywhere is open but you will not suffer with the available selection. There are so many other villages and towns to explore within a 40 mins radius including Carcassonne, that if you want you can be busy with daily trips. It is a quiet village although a couple of the locals are occasionally fond of riding their trail bikes in the evening.
Our only complaint is that the hot water often ran out on us by the early evening due to our habit of taking long showers and the electric heaters in the bedrooms were insufficient to really warm the rooms on the economical setting. The water is heated overnight due to the cost of electricity in France so I understand that these are common problems in the region, especially during the winter.
We would very much like to return to La Sucre at any time of year. The owners have done a wonderful job with the property and it is very good value for money.
The gite is all we hoped for. It is roomy, attractively furnished and well supplied with everything you might need. The hosts, Ingrid and Christopher, are friendly, efficient and helpful. We thoroughly recommend this beautiful holiday home. If you book it you will not be disappointed.
La Sucre was well appointed and lived up to our expectations.
Plenty of space and great outdoor terrace where we had most of our meals.
We found the local people very friendly.
Enjoyed the peace and quiet and very handy to the neighbouring quaint villages
Ingrid was very helpful and accommodating.
A very special part of France
We had a very nice two week holiday in a lovely and complete and comfortable home. High standard, very quiet street in a nice village.

About the host
Hosted by Ingrid Hudson
I was a documentary photographer in South Africa for many years before coming to our beautiful French village about twenty years ago. Since then I have renovated many houses both for myself and others. Part of the fun has been buying treasures from local markets and brocantes with which to furnish the houses. It was a great way to get to understand the area, learn French and make friends with the people of our village. Since I began renting my houses, of the many, many people who have come to stay with us, 12 couples ( now 15!) have themselves fallen in love with the area and bought houses in and around the village. Be warned!
Why they chose this property
It has been really satisfying renovating houses in Caunes especially as many had been abandoned. La Sucre had actually fallen down; a lost tooth in a row of lovely stone facades. To renovate it and make it a working part of the village once again has been a great privilege.
What makes this property unique
My son commissioned me to renovate La Sucre for him. We worked together on the design and finishes of the house. My daughter-in-law, a great maker of interesting houses, helped us furnish it. We found old mirrors, pretty crockery and glassware, fabrics and photographs. It has been wonderful building something as beautiful as La Sucre from a tumbled down ruin and, especially, doing it together. It is a house in which we plan to have many happy holidays getting to know the French countryside, the wines and the people. How lucky we are.
