About this property

Les Suites sarladaises, the Licorne suite

Les Suites Sarladaises consists of five upscale self-catering units (two one bedroom apartments and three studios) available for weekly rental in the heart of the historic center of Sarlat-la-Canéda, one of the most visited towns in France and capital of the ‘Perigord Noir’ area of Dordogne. Modern comfort is added to the innate coziness of ancient stones, weathered beams, fireplaces, and the patina of age.

La Licorne (Unicorn) suite, at 85 sq m, has a very large bedroom equipped with two 90 cm single beds, a separate and equally roomy salon, fully equipped kitchen, and a luxurious bath with bidet, bathtub and shower. The kitchen seems part of the salon due to an antique iron grill over the sink that permits whoever is cooking to engage with anyone in the other room. There are two handsome fireplaces, a marble mantel in Louis XV style in the living room, and a wooden one carved with Renaissance designs in the bedroom. (Due to fire regulations, however, these are both blocked and not in use.) Large windows with antique glass panes overlook the Jardin des Morts, the tiny cobbled street, and the spire of the cathedral. This apartment exudes timeless French elegance.
- The Unicorn is a legendary animal commonly shown as a symbol of purity and grace that was only able to be captured by a virgin, with its horn said to have the power to heal sickness.

Les Suites Sarladaises is housed in the ancient Hôtel de Leydis, an imposing structure of medieval origin refurbished in the 17th century as a home for magistrates of the Leydis family who presided over judicial affairs in the adjoining 'Presidial', the royal court of justice. Over the ages these and other judges were housed in the building’s stylish period rooms - hence the résidences d'époque incorporated in its business name and logo.
The building's most prominent feature is its southern facade where an ornate iron balcony rests atop flamboyantly carved stone corbels, originally of defensive use. Other stonework also evokes the middle ages - two carved gargoyles protect a niche with a statue of the Virgin Mary and there are traces of gothic arches inside and out.

About Sarlat…
The riches of Sarlat draw significant numbers of tourists to the Dordogne river valley, and the town's outstanding architectural heritage was recognized in 1962 as a national historic monument - the first French city to be so honored. It is also now designated a UNESCO world heritage site.
The historic center of Sarlat is deemed one of the most important Medieval cityscapes in all of France and Europe. Les Suites Sarladaises is in the heart of the old Medieval center - now a pedestrian zone - and an easy walk to all major attractions. Sarlat is a lively town with two markets per week (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and a year-round calendar of interesting and entertaining activities for all ages. It is especially busy in the height of summer (late July and all of August) but perhaps most enjoyable in the spring (from Easter through the end of June) and again in autumn when the crowds lessen and the weather is fine and cool.

Walking is the way to see Sarlat, and we are located in a pedestrian zone. In fact, the house features in the local walking tours and as a stop for grade school children whose art curriculum includes sketching its unique iron balcony. The town offers free and paid parking lots within a short distance from Les Suites Sarladaises, and the owners will be happy to help you find these as you plan your visit and arrange an arrival time and date.

A special gem.
Le Suites Sarladaises is a perfect place to experience all that Sarlat has to offer. This large apartment offered a roomy space to stretch out and enjoy stepping back in time. The gas lite lamp outside our living room added to ambience. The VBRO had everything we needed in the well stocked kitchen. The hosts were very helpful and clearly loved sharing their beautiful and historic property. Bed was very comfortable too. We always found free parking about 2 blocks away.

Unforgettable stay in historic city
We stayed in the elegant Caladrius suite, overlooking the rooftops and narrow walkways of ancient Sarlat. The beautifully appointed bed/sitting room, kitchenette and bathroom were very comfortable for two people. Shops, restaurants, attractions and the outdoor market were only a few minutes' walk. We had a car but only needed it for excursions beyond Sarlat, everything we needed was within walking distance. Dan is a charming host and very knowledgeable about the area. Our five-day visit was a step back in time and the locals were friendly and accommodating. We would definitely go back!

About the host

Les Suites Sarladaises is a partnership owned and managed equally by Alicia and Lotfi Moustakim.
Alicia followed a career in publishing before embarking on tourism in the southwest of France and she now manage the full activity of Les Suites Sarladaises. Lotfi trained as a computer engineer which he is currently pursuing and participates in the management of Suites Sarladaises. By adding artistic flourishes like decorative painting and unique architectural design, their work has been featured in magazines, books, and newspaper articles.
Amid the hard work and grueling grind of their various design projects, the partners have indulged in their overriding passion - travel - taking in and enjoying sometime long-term visits to such places as New York/New England; London and various corners of the UK; Italy, including Venice, Rome, Florence, Catania, Palermo, Matera, Otranto, and Naples; Paris and many other regions of France; Athens and various Greek islands, plus Madrid, Lisbon, Istanbul, Tangiers, and Prague.
The experience gained from staying in long and short-term rentals - from overnight hotel rooms to self-catered cottages and apartments, both in rural and urban areas has - if nothing else - provided firsthand knowledge of what a good accommodation should be. Developing a travel business is, thus, a natural adjunct and finale to their current restoration project. Indeed, it is the dream of them both.
