This historic house is absolutely incredible. It has been beautifully renovated and is so cozy. The amenities were perfect and we used everything offered (fireplace, barbecue, and even the assador de barro!). We visited in winter and it was very comfortable with so much to do in the area.

Trapped inside by heat:-(
I have rarely seen a rental so well equipped as this house. Sofia had every detail covered, except being there herself to meet us and explain a few things. Her mother did her best, but spoke no English at all, and we didn't have a lot of luck muddling through with Google Translate. For instance, we never did find the village store, even though we searched several times and it is only a tiny village with one main street! We only wanted to buy a very few things, and didn't want to make the scary drive back out to find the grocery store in the next town.
The house was exactly as described, spotlessly clean, with every amenity one could hope, plus many elegant luxurious touches, especially in the bathroom. And once Sofia's mother delivered some local veg to go with a lovely bottle of Mazouco wine that was provided, we were able to muddle through without having to leave to shop.
The only thing I was disappointed with in the listing was a suggestion (perhaps I misunderstood) that there was a view. The house had a walled in property, and really no view at all. That said, we only had to walk a short way at night to see the most spectacular view of the Milky Way that I have seen since I was a child. What a sky!!
The biggest problem was not the fault of the host. The whole country was in a horrible heatwave and drought, and we were stuck inside all day, only venturing out in the evening (to try to find the store!) after the sun went down. Sadly, this is not a pretty village, largely derelict and mostly devoid of colour or vegetation, presumably because of the climate. And the area around is best described as mountain desert. Completely barren. And there is really nothing to do when the weather is roasting. We went out periodically to cool in the pool, but mostly had to keep the house closed up tight, and had to cancel hikes and other plans. We ended up leaving a day early, in desperate pursuit of cool ocean breezes and greenery.
Again, this is not Sofia's fault. We should have done our homework better and understood what we were getting into. Being from Canada the drive did not appear so far, but it really is pretty darn remote. I see why most tourists stick to the coast:-(

Best New Year so far!
We have rented the appartment for the New year Eve and two further days and it was the right choice. The village is absolutely amazing, situated in picturesque valley, with olive and orange trees at the slopes. It is very quiet, free of shops and people crowds area. The house itself is on two levels- first with two bedrooms and the bathroom and the upper one - dining room with the fireplace, table, sofa, kitchenette, the other bathroom and the small courtyard with barbeque oven. As it is built from the stone- the winter period could be chilly for few hours untill the fire and the air heater will make the house warmer. The house equipped by everything you need, but you should care of your food provision ahead, as there are no shops or cafes or any other meal providing places. We had all in advance and spent the perfect holiday. So the only problem we could mention- sometimes the hot water does not work properly, may be because it is possible to switch on simultaneously just one shower, not other water sourses, may be because of winter period, but it does not ruin the cozy , like at home atmosphere that lives at the house.

Rustikales Ferienhaus in absolut ruhiger Umgebung

Why they chose this property
The house is located in the Douro region, in northern Portugal, which is one of the most famous wine regions of the country, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the birthplace of Port wine, and the first demarcated wine region in the world. you will be able to see the typical landscapes of Douro area: Douro river, wine resorts(Quintas), plantations of olive trees, orange trees, almond trees (best time to see these trees in flowers is February /March)
And you will discover the real flavour of an orange when you will eat one direct from the tree .You can find mature oranges more or less all year long. The smell of flowers of orange trees is also wonderful.
