NEIGHBORHOOD
Sampieri is a village in the municipality of Scicli, in the province of Ragusa. Famous seaside resort, charming old fishing village town, is located along a spur of limestone, between two beaches of fine golden sand. The town's economy is now mainly linked to agricultural activities and tourism. At the eastern end of the beach most of the town, on top of a cliff about 5 meters high, dominates the landscape of the coast Fornace Penna, which the locals call "or Pisciuotto". The plant has been in ruins because of arson occurred in 1924. It was a prosperous factory where bricks, exported throughout the Mediterranean basin occurred.
Today it is a tourist attraction, thanks to the use as a place of several episodes of the television series "Il Commissario Montalbano", a character created by writer Andrea Camilleri. A hundred meters from the building, in the direction of the beach and near a cave, now hidden by vegetation, flowed until a few decades ago an uncontaminated source of water, you can see the remains of an old well, maybe Greek previous period. He carved in limestone, it is a reminder of what was to be the real reason for the location of this destination. Sampieri, in fact, in the past, was probably a point of water supply for coastal marine.
Sampieri today spends his summer full of vacationers and tourists who populate the beaches and nightlife and winter with its slow rhythms rediscovers the magic of time travel more intense moments.
A Sampieri and around the vestiges of human presence dates back to ancient times. In the locality called "Costa 'ri car", next to the beach less, they are still visible remains of excavations limestone, plausible evidence of a Neolithic settlement.
Prehistoric remains are also evident in the so-called "Cava do Ràbbuso", a valley situated inside the Fornace Penna. In the area where it is now Sampieri, according to some, was a Greek colony called Apolline, a name derived from Apollo, as in the sixth century. C. in the area called "or" Puzziddu "it seems that there was a temple, now lost, in honor of Apollo. Arab geographers mention the name of Marsa Siklah Sampieri, a port where ships from North Africa and the Middle East could dock until the thirteenth century. The etymology of the name appears to be related Sampieri, some say, to San Pedro Apostle who landed here in 40 d. C., on his way to Rome.
