Bribirska glavica
Only 15 kilometres from Skradin, branching off from the main road of the town of Bribir, is a winding path leading towards the 300 meter high hill. The captivating site today known as Bribirska Glavica has with good reason, due to its mystical combination of nature and ancient structures, been named the Croatian City of Troy.
Due to its strategic position it has been the central town of the entire area for almost 6000 years.
The ancient Liburnian settlement, the Roman municipium Varvaria, the mythical Bribir under the powerful Croatian feudal ruler ban Pavao Šubić of Bribir – all these civilisations recognized the significance of this, at first glance so insignificant hill.

There are few archaeological sites which offer a view of such clear and richly intertwined layers of turbulent history. Stroll around and discover the ancient sarcophagi, reservoirs and "ceramic coolers", the 2 meter thick walls from the times of Liburnia and Antiquity, remnants of sacral buildings, the rich collection of exhibit items dating from the prehistorical to the late medieval period. You will find it all there, on the 72 thousand square meters large plateau.

From the top of Bribirska Glavica unfolds a fantastic panoramic view of the Dinara mountain range and the Adriatic islands, all the way to the distant island of Vis.
Maraguša
Mausoleums of Roman noblemen from the 1st and 2nd century. On the site, very valuable pieces of jewellery and various glass and metal objects have been found.

Rokovača
Bay in which the Skradin Marina is located. Site of Roman sarcophagi and the Villa Urbana. On that spot, the Roman port Horea with its stone mosaics was once located.

Đardin
Rich archaeological site of gold jewelery belonging to members of the upper class of the Roman municipium Scardona. The collection includes necklaces, bracelets and precious rings made of amber dating from the 1st century.
About Skradin
Take your place as the most important part of that perfection.
When speaking about the 6000 year long existence of the Skradin area, historians endowed with wisdom search for the reasons of that continuity in its location and geo-strategic position.
History always looks for great and sensible reasons. However, the truth is often much simpler since people and everyday life are smarter than history.

Skradin is simply magical in its each and every detail.
In the loud morning silence that gets under your skin and the stentorian traditional folk klapa singing that touches your heart. In the peace and quiet of the Visovac monastery and the burst of water drops of the Skradinski Buk waterfall.
In each moment of enjoyment of food which has skilfully managed to escape both fridges and freezers which would rob it of its natural aromas and has arrived thoroughly fresh at your table.

Such is Skradin, small, picturesque and filled with flavour, found at a point where the river passionately embraces the sea.
Such is Skradin, at the border of reality and fantasy.
Such is Skradin, perfect, both in past and present.

The secret of Skradin
Yet even a million inhabitants is not that which makes a city but the sense of connection among its people, their respect for public good and social norms.
A city is a state of mind and a way of life, there lays the secret. The secret of ancient Skradin is hidden in the harmony of its good strategic position, in its fertile fields, in the depths of its rivers and sea and in its unusually beautiful scenery.
In Skradin this harmony was also transferred to the social community through the Medieval Statute of the town written in Latin at the beginning of the 14th century, under the rule of the famous Pavao Šubić when Skradin was the principal town of Croatia and Bosnia!
The original manuscript of the Statute is kept in Venice in St. Mark’s Library. Long ago in the 4th century Skradin was the centre of the early Christian diocese. Even earlier than that, it was the capital of the Roman Province of Liburnia, and before that, the capital of Liburnia.
A few facts:
The surroundings of Skradin have been inhabited since the Neolithic period – the oldest settlement dates from the year 3500 B.C. The first data about the town of Skradin dates from the year 33 B.C.

The first data about the town of Skradin dates from the year 33 B.C.

Skradin had the first hydroelectric power plant in Europe, opened in 1895, at the same time as Tesla’s famous power plant at Niagara Falls!

The most beautiful view of Skradin extends from the belvedere and the bridge situated on auto route A1, en route towards Split. Due to its breathtaking view, this belvedere was nominated for the Golden Flower of Europe award for the most beautiful belvedere on European auto routes.

Gastro Skradin
Fruits from the soil
Cultivating land and exploiting the riches from the depths of the river and sea have always been the main activities of the inhabitants of the Skradin area.
Proof of that is revealed in findings from the age of Antiquity such as the Roman villa rustica containing the remains of wine and olive presses and tanks! Being excellent seamen, the Liburnians shipped their products even before the Roman period on vessels called liburna. It is no wonder that those activities were legally regulated as far back as in the 14th century in the already mentioned Statute of the town of Skradin. The agricultural tradition of the inhabitants of Skradin is best embodied in the renowned Bedrica family of wine merchants and viticulturists. Long ago in 1932, their famous wine variety debit won the grand prix award at the wine fair in Toulouse, France and was declared one of the six best wines in the world.

In the Bedrica family home one of the richest collections of original tools, machines and devices for the production of alcoholic beverages in Europe has been collected and treasured for more than two hundred years. Viticulture and wine production are not an exception, the same applies for olive growing, honey production, fishery – centuries of life in the rhythm of nature and the changing seasons have created an art in itself. As in the past, so in the present, eco-products are produced on small family farms and can be found on richly laid out tables in Skradin.

Let the rich gold of olives and deep redness of wine colour your days in Skradin, so join the table!
