Welcome to Hyde House, an exceptionally spacious country house surrounded in summer by lawns and flowers, in winter with snow covered trees. With 5000 square feet of living space and 22 acres of land, there is room for everyone. Perfect for multi generational vacations. Built in the Edwardian era, around 1910, the house has been refurbished and now has 5-6 bedrooms, three and half baths, a double living room, formal dining room and a bright and sunny country kitchen. And we just added a beautiful sun room !
In winter 4 bedrooms are heated and the third floor is closed off.
Tucked away out of sight of the road, but handily just off Route 16, the house is a mile north of the village of Chocorua, Tamworth, located in the popular New Hampshire Lakes Region in the White Mountains. In summer guests love swimming in Chocorua Lake, canoeing, fishing, or hiking the many trails. Anyone for tennis? There is a slightly battered hard court on the property, and, for the more sedate, a croquet lawn.
Or you can just relax on the wide screened porch and watch the hummingbirds!
There are four spacious romantic bedrooms on the second floor, two with king-size beds, including a four poster. The two other bedrooms have two single beds each. A crib and high chair are also available. On the third floor (closed in winter) are two bedrooms full size beds and a sitting room with a futon.
Downstairs, the kitchen has a gas cooker, fridge, two freezers, dishwasher and microwave. Washer and dryer is on the second floor. Wi-Fi throughout. Roku TV. DVD players and flat screens. Two minutes away your own private beach on Lake Chocorua comes with a swimming raft and canoe. Bring your fishing rod!
Additional beach privileges come with the house at Chocorua Lake, 3 minutes away, or for the little ones the safe beach at shallow Bear Camp Pond, 15 minutes away. The Farmer's Market in the village of Tamworth on Saturday mornings is wildly popular, with country music, home baked goodies and artisan cheese. The Cook Library and Chocorua Library close by rent out videos and lend books. For hikers, Chocorua Mountain trails start half a mile away. For dedicated shoppers North Conway outlets are 10 miles north on Route 16 and offer steep discounts on name brands like Polo Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade, Coach, Michael Kors, Eddie Bauer and LL Bean.
The property has an interesting history. Formerly the site of the famous Chocorua Inn, the land behind the Inn was bought by a certain Pratt Hyde, of the Pratt and Whitney fortune. He and his cousin, Lilibet, would come up from Baltimore for the summer as children. When they wanted to marry, their families forbade both of them to visit the Inn ever again. Since they loved the place, and each other, Pratt bought the land behind the Inn, married Lilibet and built her the Hyde House. They brought over two English gardeners to lay out the grounds and flower beds, and built them a little cottage. The cook and butler slept in the finished attic.
There is a quarter mile driveway off Route 16 to reach the house and plenty of parking space for 4 cars.
Two hours by car from Boston, an hour from Manchester, New Hampshire. What are you waiting for?
