Highland Cottage: Nestled Between the Atlantic Coast and the White Mountains
Highland Cottage
Nestled Between the Atlantic Ocean and White Mountains. Still, WiFi Internet Service is available at Highland Cottage.
Picturesquely situated in the highlands overlooking the Saco and Ossipee River Valleys, this cottage offers a phenomenal mountain view with rolling hills and open fields. The winding country road, bordered by long stretches of stonewalls, provides a partial panorama of the foothills of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. A three-minute stroll brings one to an impressive overlook.
Highland Cottage is located one-half mile off the Pequawket Trail (Route 113), a Maine Scenic Byway. It is a two-story structure with lovely woodwork and is attractively decorated; the artistically-designed stairway is accentuated by morning sunlight. There are two bedrooms: one with a full-size bed, the other with a set of twin beds. The living room has a futon that opens to a full-size bed. Thus the cottage sleeps six. An eat-in kitchen with special country charm seats six diners. There is one bathroom with a shower as well as a washer and dryer laundry center.
The kitchen has a microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and full-size cook stove as well as a dishwasher. Pots, pans, dinnerware, and utensils are provided.
In addition…
• A screened-in porch with table and chairs
• A TV and DVD player (no cable)
• A CD player
• Small library collection, including general interest books, cookbooks
• Games and puzzles
• Portable electric fireplace and electric heat
• Stainless steel BBQ grille
• Washer and dryer
• Outdoor furniture

About the host
Hosted by Bernadette Monette and Gerry Giroux
Gerry summered in Maine as a boy. His parents (both fine artists) purchased an old farmhouse on a 40-acre estate in West Baldwin to use as an "artists retreat" on weekends and during the summer. Highland Cottage was formerly their "Orchard Hill Gallery." The beauty of the mountain views served as a continuous source of inspiration. Gerry inherited the gift of drawing; he works in other artistic mediums as well. Bernadette vacationed in Maine as a teenager; she met Gerry there while on spring break from college. Together they pursue their artistic interests. From writing to painting to metalwork to blacksmithing to... They relish the solitude of a country lifestyle!
Why they chose this property
Highland Cottage is centrally located between the Atlantic Ocean and White Mountains. The location offers a plenitude of opportunities for recreation, education, and cultural enrichment. There is a certain romanticism about living in the mountains, hills, and surrounding forests of Southern Maine. The quietude is soothing and inspirational. In addition, there is an excitement about visiting the coast. The unpredictable nature of the Atlantic Ocean is ever suspenseful. The rhythm of gentle waves can be hypnotically relaxing. Or the violent thrashing of surf hitting the rocky coastline can be awe inspiring!
What makes this property unique
More than anything, it is the solitude and the beauty of the mountains and valleys. Yet so close to major metropolitan areas! A train ride to Boston... A train ride up Mount Washington... A ferry cruise to Nova Scotia. Being picturesquely situated between coast and mountain is awesome!
