This place was incredibly sweet and a perfect spot for our family to end our North Shore vacation. Very old-school and absolutely charming. Rooms were tidy and very welcoming. Loved the quilts on the beds, the wonderful kitchen, cozy living room, and the incredible views of the lake. We will be returning next summer!
I had a nice stay here. The cabins were cozy and had a full kitchen. It had a nice view of Lake Superior as well. The only downsides were one of the bedrooms didn't have a heat source and the bathroom just a had a small shower. But that wasn't a concern for me. Grand Marais is a short drive away.
My husband and I loved staying here for a week!! It was just what we were looking for; quiet, simple and cozy. The cottage has everything you need, just bring food.
Wonderful view of Lake Superior, loved listening to the crashing waves. Perfect place for a stress free getaway:)
My husband and I spent a week traveling along the North Shore this fall, and we loved this property best of all the places we stayed. We loved the quiet seclusion, the cozy cottage, and hearing the waves of Lake Superior right outside our door. We appreciated the well stocked kitchen and gas fireplace places. Such a relaxing ambience.
My friends and I stayed at the Croftville for my graduation get away celebration. We loved everything about this place!! Great spot for book writing, final papers, reflection, reconnect, etc..
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Croftville Cottages. The location was perfect, quiet and close to all the places we wanted to venture out to see. Will stay there again for sure!
We loved our time at at the cottage. It felt like a home-away-from-home respite. Covid precautions were sensible and intuitive. The check-in/check-out process was seamless, everything was neat as a pin, and fantastic view of Lake Superior just a few paces away. We received a quick response to the one question we had, and couldn't have been happier with our experience. We look forward to making this an annual tradition.
We have stayed at cozy cabin #2 multiple times. As before, experience great. Peaceful setting with hiking and skiing minutes away. Perfect winter vacation.
Wonderful little cabin with all the amenities you would need! Steps away from Lake Superior, and a quick drive into the town of Grand Marais! Plenty of good hikes near by to explore, and only about an hour from Split Rock Lighthouse and an hour and a half from Gooseberry Falls. Would definitely recommend!
Perfect cozy cabin for our Thanksgiving weekend stay. Close to Grand Marais, hiking trails, and wonderful a Lake Superior view. All essential items provided.
This cottage was exactly what we were looking for! Plenty of space to sleep our family of six comfortably, short walk to the rocky beach where kids could climb over the boulders and skip rocks. Little private spaces to sit and listen to the waves crashing on shore all over the property. Short drive to downtown Grand Marais so we could easily drive in for dinner. Thank you for a wonderful experience!
Cottage had everything we needed — cousins from Norway commented it looked like Norway. FIre and loons on lake — so quiet and enjoyable. The owner Chris was very nice — maybe I can finangle letting us bring clean, well behaved pets next year when it is just the wife and I???

About the host
Hosted by Teresa and Mike Chmelik
Teresa and Mike Chmelik are the owners and operators of Croftville Road Cottages. They live in the owners quarters of their inn. In an era when most mom and pop resorts along Lake Superior are being closed, Teresa and Mike have built Croftville Road Cottages from a former resort property that had been unoccupied for 10 years. At the same time they have raised their children along Lake Superior in a small town setting and kept outside employment to support themselves while building their business. 2018 marks the first year that Croftville Road Cottages has finally fully supported them. They have done as much of the renovations, repairs, and construction as they can themselves. When that has not sufficed, Teresa and Mike have relied on the help of family, friends, and skilled local craftsmen.
Why they chose this property
Teresa and Mike long dreamed of having a resort on Lake Superior. Grand Marais had always been a special place for them. For Teresa, her parents had met as students at the Grand Marais Art Colony in the early 1950's. For Mike, Grand Marais had always been the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The Chmeliks with the help of their good friends purchased their dream property in July 2003. It was a former resort property unoccupied for 10 years. That summer and fall was spent making the house habitable while living in a borrowed camper trailer until Halloween. The next 3 years were used to clean up the property and extensively renovate the cottages. Croftville Road Cottages opened for business in 2007. In 2011 the Chmeliks decided to reconstruct the house into the main inn for the resort providing living quarters, an office, and 5 vacation suites. In June they bought a travel trailer to live in and serve as an office during the expansion. With a variance granted, the Chmeliks secured financing in June 2013 after the deconstruction and demolition of the old house had already begun. Construction for the inn began in August. The Chmeliks moved into the partially completed inn in October 2016. The first 2 vacation suites in the inn opened in June 2017 and remaining 3 in July 2018.
