I totally enjoyed my winter getaway. Loved seeing the sunrise come into the bedroom. The location was great, within close proximity to everything I needed. I loved the snow and found a great trail for snowshoe hiking up off Gunflint Trail. The cottage was perfect. Loved the gas stove heaters. The bed was comfortable and the bath towels were very soft. Accommodations were great.
Updated and lovely cottage that is well equipped. The owners put thought into the decor and the items provided on the kitchen and bathroom. Great views of Lake Superior and winte hiking. We are looking forward to our next visit
Not a bad word to describe our experience. We had a party of two and we love the North Shore of Lake Superior. It was easy breezy to reserve, checkin, check out, etc. Cottage #3 had everything and more in every room. Framed notes throughout included directions or answers to every question about how the place operates (like gas fire place, what light switches do what, where the recycling goes, where to hang lawn furniture cushions, etc). Every detail was well thought out and the owners clearly know what they are doing to create pleasurable stays. There is an up-north, mid-west, lake life vibe throughout. We enjoyed bon fires right on the lake shore, star gazing, rock hopping, and exploring the outside property. We could have comfortably invited 4 more guests, as it’s plenty spacious. We will book again.
My friend and I celebrated 11 years of my kidney donation to him with a trip along the north shore. We only stayed for one night, but would book it again for several nights! Everything was so clean, neat, & comfortable. Sleeping with the windows open I enjoyed falling asleep to the crashing waves, while my friend slept in the back bedroom to peace and quiet. The place is a hidden gem and would go back again and again!! It was everything I had hoped for and more!
Property was just as pictured and advertised, perfect for my elderly mother and me to use as our home base for enjoying Grand Marais and the Gunflint Trail. We relaxed, read, played cards, marveled at Lake Superior, and didn’t even miss the fact there as no broadcast or cable TV!
We enjoyed our stay. The cabins are very clean and appointed nicely, in a very peaceful setting on Croftville Road right on the lake. We enjoyed several hikes and snowshoeing on area trails.
I rented over Christmas for a winter getaway. The location, the property, and the accommodations were all magnificent! The cozy cottage was clean, with a decent sized kitchen and a good bathroom. The gas stoves were wonderful for the winter experience. I especially loved you could go straight out the back patio and there were little trails to get you to the lake. The views of the lake and night stars were stunning. The host thought of every detail, including a pet basket with goodies to welcome my dog!
First week of September visit. We had a wonderful stay beautiful weather and a beautiful beautiful cabin to stay in. Enjoyed it very much. Will stay again at the same place.

Cozy and Clean!
Beautiful property and dog friendly! Stayed only one night for a short work trip with my four legged companion but will be back to stay longer! Very clean cabins with updated and modern interiors. Keep up the great work!
The cabin was cozy and simple. It was nicely decorated--I loved the quilts on the beds. They thought of everything, and had a nice fireplace available outside. So close to Lake Superior. Everything was perfect!

Great stay.
Very cute and cozy. Clean and comfortable. Loved the fire ring and all the chairs outside. It was perfect. The only thing they could use is a few coffee mugs. Cups were too small. Also it would be nice to have a muffin tin. The staff was great. We can't wait to go back.

Great getaway
Most relaxing mini vacation I've ever had. My husband and I wanted to do some exploring of the area and I found this perfect little gem to book for the weekend. My son and daughter in law were able to join us, the cabin is clean and well kept, location to town is perfect, quiet, peaceful and everything you need for to relax and enjoy the great north shore. We will definitely be going back

About the host
Hosted by Teresa and Mike Chmelik
Teresa and Mike Chmelik are the owners and operators of Croftville Road Cottages. They live in the owners quarters of their inn. In an era when most mom and pop resorts along Lake Superior are being closed, Teresa and Mike have built Croftville Road Cottages from a former resort property that had been unoccupied for 10 years. At the same time they have raised their children along Lake Superior in a small town setting and kept outside employment to support themselves while building their business. 2018 marks the first year that Croftville Road Cottages has finally fully supported them. They have done as much of the renovations, repairs, and construction as they can themselves. When that has not sufficed, Teresa and Mike have relied on the help of family, friends, and skilled local craftsmen.
Why they chose this property
Teresa and Mike long dreamed of having a resort on Lake Superior. Grand Marais had always been a special place for them. For Teresa, her parents had met as students at the Grand Marais Art Colony in the early 1950's. For Mike, Grand Marais had always been the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The Chmeliks with the help of their good friends purchased their dream property in July 2003. It was a former resort property unoccupied for 10 years. That summer and fall was spent making the house habitable while living in a borrowed camper trailer until Halloween. The next 3 years were used to clean up the property and extensively renovate the cottages. Croftville Road Cottages opened for business in 2007. In 2011 the Chmeliks decided to reconstruct the house into the main inn for the resort providing living quarters, an office, and 5 vacation suites. In June they bought a travel trailer to live in and serve as an office during the expansion. With a variance granted, the Chmeliks secured financing in June 2013 after the deconstruction and demolition of the old house had already begun. Construction for the inn began in August. The Chmeliks moved into the partially completed inn in October 2016. The first 2 vacation suites in the inn opened in June 2017 and remaining 3 in July 2018.
