About this property
Experience Prairie Light, your vacation "home on the range".
Enjoy an overnight, a weekend, a week, or more at Prairie Light. This unique straw bale home on 1 ½ scenic acres offers all the comforts of home in a quiet neighborhood in rural Kansas. Within driving distance to historic downtown Dodge City and the Boot Hill Museum, as well as possible day trips to the Dalton Gang Hideout in Meade, the Santa Fe Trail Tracks, Dorothy’s House and Wizard of Oz Museum in Liberal, or Jacob’s Well and the prairie as it was at the Big Basin Prairie Preserve. Perfect for family trips!
Or stay in and enjoy the play of light across the clerestory and the sounds of birds in the yard as you peruse the bookshelves, enjoy the work of local artists, and take advantage of the reading nooks and meditation space available. With a private yard, as well as additional open space outdoors, and a variety of thinking, working, and writing spaces available indoors this home is a wonderful place for a personal spiritual retreat, or a working retreat for artists and musicians, or a family getaway.
In support of family engagement and connection media sources are minimal. There is an "old school" tube tv connected to a vcr/dvd player along with a small library of family friendly videos and dvds. There is wifi available and the speed supports streaming if you would like to engage with media online through streaming.

About the host
Hosted by Jane Lindamood
Hi, I'm Jane, the local host for Prairie Light. My dear friends Peggy and Richard built this lovely home in the early 2000s and later relocated elsewhere in the country to be closer to their grandchildren. I am happy to host you at Prairie Light while these kiddos grow up and hope you are able to experience the gorgeous light and prairie spirit they wove in to every aspect of this home.
Why they chose this property
We built this visionary house beginning in 2004. It was always our dream to build a straw bale house, as a statement for environmental issues that defined our lifestyles. When we started, we never realized how long it would take nor the effort required to build a structure that was radically different from the current construction of houses. But long ago, on the Kansas prairies, homes were created out of the dirt, or “soddies” as they were called. We longed to return to the simplicity of nature’s gifts.
What makes this property unique
All the different angles, high ceilings, southern exposure to the sun, materials of wood and stucco, and all the various little niches, kiva openings, and unique art, make for an interesting place to dwell. The house became the place for “opposites”- high and low, dark and light colors, old and new materials,
So many interesting phenomena happened in the “light and space” of the house, that it became a marvel to observe and experience. For example, the magic rainbow colors appear around the room. We have seen the moon from every window. Twice, we have been “moonstruck” while lying in bed. Once we had the sun from the east window shine directly on the sun face on the west wall. And there are always wonderful shadows bouncing off the organic, undulating stucco walls of the straw bales.
