About this property
Elegant Apartment in Vejer Old Town, renovated but with lovely original features
Casa del Arte is situated in the quiet & beautiful medieval quarter of Vejer, 2 mins from the delightful central square - Plaza de España - with its amazing fountain and its restaurants and bars. It is on the first floor of one of the most historic townhouses in Vejer. The common patio is entered through thick wooden doors and then a wrought iron gateway. The flat blends traditional Moorish features with modern facilities. The interior has been completely renovated, utilising the large floor area to stunning effect. Hand-made terracotta floor tiles run throughout the property, with hand-stained doors and Arabic metal lanterns giving their own special and individual touch.
The thick walls of this historic building protect those inside from the Summer heat so that you feel secure and comfortable inside this hidden gem. Inside the apartment there is a wonderful feeling of space and light. Through each window is a wrought-iron balcony with typical Spanish roll-down shutters. From the living room you can sit and look over the bougainvillea-covered roof of the house next door to the city walls and the countryside down below. The whole flat is bathed in that special light of the Costa de la Luz.
Both bedrooms are a good size and have double beds and balconies. There is also a sofa-bed in the living room that can be used for extra guests.
The kitchen is large and again has a balcony. It also has a washing machine, oven, ceramic hob, toaster, juicer and the usual pots and pans etc. In the living room is a flat-screen TV and blu-ray player, plus a sound system that takes an iPhone or iPod. There are also books and DVDs which guests are welcome to borrow.
The bathroom has a shower over the bath and towels and bedlinen are provided.
High on a hill, nestled between the sierras and the sea, Vejer de la Frontera is a beautifully preserved, white hilltop village. It was voted the prettiest white hilltop town in Spain and a heritage site by the Spanish Government in 1978. Vejer still retains a potent Moorish character so with its Christian churches and convents, Moorish architecture and a Jewish quarter, it is a microcosm of Spain's colourful history.
The wonderful thing about being in Vejer is how quickly one forgets the hustle and bustle of life in the city. The pace of life here is quintessentially Andalucian. The day often starts lazily, with a typical breakfast of freshly-squeezed orange juice, cafe con leche and tostada with tomato, garlic and olive oil, which you can have in one of many cafés.

About the host
Hosted by Mr Ivan Sutherland
I grew up in Liverpool but have lived in London, now Hackney, for most of the last 30 years. I work as an IT Consultant but also indulge my love of photography in between contracts.
Why they chose this property
I came to Spain in 2003 after selling the dot com where I was IT Director. I wanted to spend 2 years living life differently, which took me to Spain to learn Spanish, then to Costa Rica to work with street kids and then to Mallorca where I worked as a photographic assistant. During my time in Spain I was in San Sebastian, Salamanca and then finally Granada. It was while in Granada that I took a trip along the coast through Andalucia and stayed in Vejer for the first time. I fell in love with the place immediately, coming back 3 or 4 times before deciding to buy Casa del Arte, so named because it was then above a little art gallery.
What makes this property unique
Of all the places I have stayed I find coming to Vejer the most calming and beautiful. The apartment is so wonderfully light and airy and the views from my apartment an elsewhere of the white houses tumbling down the hillside always enchanting.
There is a blog written by Christina Wilson, a regular visitor to Vejer, that has lots of useful info about places to go etc. Vejer is the ideal place from which to explore the Atlantic Costa de la Luz (the Coast of Light) and the 'sierras' of Cádiz. Walking, golf, bike riding, trekking, bird watching, painting, Cape Trafalgar, seafaring Cádiz, seemingly endless white beaches, kite surfing, wind surfing, quiet palm-filled plazas, the sherry bodegas of Jérez, horse riding through pine forests, a day trip to Tangiers.
