About this property
Converted Water Mill With Private Pool
Casa do Lagar is a rustic property that allows guests to feel as if they have escaped from it all as it is nestled in a quiet valley surrounded by fields and vineyards with a stream running alongside the house. There are pleasant walks from the front door and guests are more likely to see an ox and cart come down the lane than another car. Yet it is perfectly situated for exploring the Minho region and is just 10 minutes' drive from lovely Ponte de Lima with its restaurants, cafes and many activities (canoeing, cycling, gardens, river beaches, market).

Great house, with a lot o space, in a very quiet area.
The region is also great to visit. Waterfalls and rivers, typical villages, some much too do and visit.
Great for families.
Absolute idyllic old mill - just minutes from town
The picture of the property says it all - this is an absolutely idyllically located old mill, seemingly in its own wooded valley yet only minutes from the town.

Thanks, David. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at the mill.
Extended stay with my family was incredibly fun and relaxing! Our kids had the time of their lives exploring the country side and absolutely loved the pool and yard. The trip was amazing and we can’t wait to come back!

Thanks so much, Erin, to you, Matt and the family for being such great guests. We hope to welcome you back soon.
A very hot week but the mill stayed cool all the time. The pool was great for cooling off, and sunbathing around. The drive in and out is interesting, the bridge is very tight with a larger car. Directions from host were perfect. The surrounding area had plenty to do, one week barely scratched the surface.
Do not be put off by the unmade track that weaves downhill for the last two hundred metres to reveal this old mill where the sound of the stream is a constant gentle background in the most peaceful of locations. Across a narrow bridge there is a sunny pool in a manicured lawn shaded by lemon trees on one side and the old mill up a short drive on the other. If the main room initially seems a little dark, it is also beautifully cool, insulated by the heavy stone walls. The large well equipped kitchen is sunny leading onto a lovely shady terrace outside for eating. The three bathrooms are a great advantage, one downstairs. The wooden stairs and floors make it a bit noisy if people move around at night. It is very well stocked with good books and games and dvds. Well supported by the owners and the local family who look after the property who sorted out a small electrical problem immediately. Though hidden away, the mill is in fact 5 minutes from Ponte da Lima. a delightful town by the wide, clean river with an array of cafes and restaurants. A perfect place for family and friends.

Many thanks for this thoughtful review which really captures the spirit of the place. The unmade track used to extend all the way to the road - in recent years the top has been paved and as of last year we even have a road name! So glad you enjoyed your stay. We agree that it is a very special place.
We have just returned from a 10 day stay at The Mill.
Myself and my husband stayed for the full 10 days and our daughter & her boyfriend joined us for a week.
The Mill is stunning.
The pictures do not give it justice.
We were completely blown away by it.
The house is huge and had everything you need from towels to salt and pepper.
We cooked most nights as we love to stay in secluded, quirky places, explore during the day then come back and cook.
And it felt like coming home every time we returned.
We had a barbecue one night, sat outside in the sun with the river and the wildlife.
Definitely recommend.
And then we have the huge pool area.
Where we spent many happy hours.
Swimming, sunbathing, talking, laughing and listening to music.
So if you want seclusion but close enough to explore by car, this is the place to be.
We loved it!
We had a fabulous stay at the mill with our grown up children. The enjoyed the mill's rustic charms in such a beautiful setting. We enjoyed morning coffee outside by the river with the flowing water and leisurely afternoons in the garden by the pool. It was wonderful to have so much space to spread out. We had temperatures in the high 30s on the first two days and the mill stayed cool, providing welcome relief from the heat. We enjoyed cooking in the well equipped kitchen and made use of the delicious lemons growing in the garden. Ponte de Lima is stunning - the oldest town in Portugal. We swam in the river and hired kayaks. We had excellent, good value food and wine at two of the restaurants behind the tower in Ponte de Lima. All in all a fabulous stay. We would love to come back
Our stay at the Mill in Ponte de Lima was an absolute delight! I grew up in Portugal so I am very used to the Portuguese culture and way of life and The Mill did not disappoint in being very much part of that amazing culture. Northern Portugal is a special place and somewhere everyone should visit. The Mill is isolated (but I quite like that!) but the surrounding nature and views make up for any of this. The house itself has all you could need and we even managed one day in the pool (during April) which was a bonus especially for the kids! We enjoyed plenty of walks on the trails around the Mill and just loved sharing this space with nature. It is very peaceful, particularly with the running stream alongside the Mill. Not far from the centre of PDL and easy access to motorways. We made trips to Valenca and Ponte de Barca which were both beautiful. The only thing I would complain about is not staying for longer!! Darren and Lucy are great hosts and were very helpful during our time there, answering an queries we had. We will be back for sure!!

Thanks, Vicky. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at the mill. We hope to welcome you back again some time. As you say, Northern Portugal is something of an undiscovered gem.
Excellent location 4km from Ponte de Lima, we were a group of cyclists/ walkers so the location could not have been bette. Darren gave us the name and contact details of a taxi which made it very easy to travel to and from town in the evening. The property was spacious and clean with plenty of hot water. Communication with Darren was excellent.

Thanks, Paula. It was our pleasure to host you, and we are so pleased that you had a good holiday at the mill.
What a place to stay. The small stream that runs by the property gives your holiday the ultimate in relaxing soundtracks! We have two young girls and there are three secure gates between the house and the pool making it easy to keep them safe from wondering off unknowingly. The surrounding view from the pool is great, lots of lush green trees and mountain side to stare at while relaxing by the pool. An easy drive from Porto and a lovely old town near by. The owners and the local help were really great and responded quickly to questions and concerns...I want to go back again soon :-)

Wonderful house in a great area
We had four nights at the Mill and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Mill is obviously a much loved family home and we felt very lucky that we were able to have some time here. It is beautifully equipped for a holiday house, including a teapot, an unusual item in our experience of renting houses in Europe. The mill is in a great location, quiet and rural but only a short drive to beautiful Ponte de Lima and in easy reach of both the mountains in the Penedes de Geres National park and the coast. We were lucky enough to be here for one of the fortnightly Monday markets in Ponte de Lima - a great experience and much bigger than anticipated. As our stay was so early in the year we were unable to take advantage of all the facilities, (swimming pool, barbecue, stream for paddling), as it was still chill. However, the efficient woodburning stove, central heating and hot water bottles made up for that! As with many Portuguese rural houses it is accessed down a track rather than a road and, as our car hire company had upgraded us to a Jeep Cherokee, descending the track and crossing the narrow bridge required us to breathe in! Manuel, the delightful caretaker/gardener whizzed over it in his pick up without noticing..... Thank you for letting us stay, we very much hope we can come back.

Cinq Chambres pouvant loger jusqu'à 10 personnes.

Thanks, Michel. The lighting has been upgraded and new bathrooms installed in February 2019. It is true that the mill is accessed via a short unpaved public road, but it is nowhere near 700m before you reach tarmac. Yes, unpaved roads involve dust. The local Council has widened the small bridge next to the house. The fixed BBQ is indeed next to the kitchen rather than by the pool. This can be seen from the photos. The pool should be cleaned each week, but a net is provided for more regular superficial cleaning required - we are close to nature after all. The house is rustic, as advertised and as is shown in the photos.

Wonderful, relaxing holiday
10 of us (5 adults, 5 children) had a wonderful, relaxing stay in Casa do Lagar. The accommodation met all our requirements and despite us being a sizeable group the property always felt spacious. The swimming pool and surrounding gardens were in excellent condition and the children had a lovely time playing there, whilst also enjoying exploring the surrounding area and paddling in the stream. We also made extensive use of the barbecue and patio area.
The property is not only a 10 minute drive from the beautiful and historic town of Ponte de Lima, but also brilliantly situated to visit the rest of northern Portugal and western Spain. The mill met and exceeded all of our expectations.
About the host
Hosted by Lucy and Darren Welch
We are an English family with two children. Now 16 and 13, they have grown up having holidays all year round at Casa do Lagar. Family and friends have enjoyed the mill for years. Having returned to the UK after years living overseas, we have now decided to share the mill with guests.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the Ponte de Lima area while on holiday when the children were still babies. The region has so much to offer: long sandy beaches, the national park, canoeing or swimming in the rivers as well as ancient towns with plenty of fiestas. And Ponte de Lima itself is idyllic with the river running under the Roman bridge, the old square and excellent restaurants. Ponte de Lima is also an ideal base for exploring the whole region as it is centrally placed with easy access to beaches, the national park, down to Porto or up into Spain.
What makes this property unique
It was important to us to find somewhere close to Ponte de Lima and yet we also wanted to feel as if we had escaped from it all. As soon as we saw Casa do Lagar we knew we had found the ideal property. It is in a very peaceful spot, nestled in a quiet valley surrounded by trees and fields. All we hear is the soft babble of the stream. And yet we are just 10 minutes from Ponte de Lima and the motorways so it is easy to get around the region. Meanwhile the children are so busy playing in the stream, the surrounding woods and the pool that they are happy not to go anywhere at all!
