Well-appointed cottage

The cottage has everything you need to use as a base for exploring this remote part of Sutherland. The only downside is the upstairs space where it is a bit awkward for tall people.

Lovely get away

Lovely to come home to a well stocked cottage with fabulous fires to recover from a day out hiking or surfing. Beaches at Balakneil and Sango were fab for surfing and great hiking routes. Fresh fish on Wednesday was a real treat too.

Our Easter break at Carbreck cottage

We had a fabulous break during the Easter holidays staying 7th-11th April at the cottage it had everything you wanted including a slow cooker which was very handy and used the fire at night as it was so cosy while we played cards with our kids. We felt we settled in really quickly and scenery was stunning all around the cottage. It felt like a proper escape from our busy life back home. The weather was fantastic too where we explored a lot of the beaches nearby including our favourite Balnakeil beach.& climbed a Munro too Ben Hope on of the sunniest & warmest days of the year so far! Gillie was so helpful on answering any questions we had too. We will be back to stay at the cottage for sure.

The perfect family style cottage

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at this cute re mote cottage. The cottage has a homely atmosphere, there are games to play, videos and dvds to watch and two fireplaces. This makes the house very cosy! Everything you need is in present; firelighters, candles, dishwashing cubes etc. This makes the cottage really comfortable. The cottage is very remote, which makes it a unique place to stay. We were even lucky enough to see the northern lights. We visited the place in the beginning in March, so a lot was closed around the area, so that’s something to keep in mind. Although there was a very good Spar in Durness with great produce. We really loved our stay here, and we would really recommend!

Comfortable and interesting property.

Very good place from which to explore the Durness area, and to return to. The accommadation itself is very comfortable and contains all that is needed for an enjoyable stay. The views are breathtaking and we really loved sitting at the kitchen window watching the landscape change, which it did with great frequency, due to the weather. Most days we experienced rain and fierce winds but also periods of brilliant sunshine, sometimes all these happened at the same time with added rainbows. Would thoroughly reccommend for a relaxed and interesting stay in an area where the landscape is awesome in the true meaning of the word.

Outstanding

Staying at the Carbreck house made me feel lucky. Such a cozy home with all you need - every detail thoughtfully added and placed. The blackout curtains in the bedrooms, extra blankets, in floor heating, conveniently placed firewood, accessible hosts, local contacts, GORGEOUS LOCATION and modern amenities all at the edge of the world. It was quite possibly the best vacation I've ever had. Was it the best sleep of my life? Yes. Was it adventurous? Yes. Was it restful and rejuvenating? Yes. Were the hosts interesting and delightful? Yes. I'll spend the rest of my life wanting to return. Thanks for a great stay!

Shower was also great. It is quite remote so glad we had taken supplies with us.Thank you for a lovely stay in an idylic setting for our NC500 trip.

Upsides: - The location of and views from this cottage are incredible! - The wood stoves are fantastic. There's one in each of the main rooms, and a generous amount of wood is supplied.- The beds are very comfortable.- The shower is excellent.- Everything was very clean.Challenges:- When we first arrived the internet wasn’t working, but the manager advised us to turn it off for 5 minutes and then on again, and that did the trick.- The stairs, as mentioned in the property listing, are extremely steep and narrow and the carpet is a bit slippery, so going up and down requires great care.- The cooking utensils could use an upgrade. The only frying pans are very old and battered with the Teflon flaking off (health hazard), and there’s no lid that fits any of the frying pans. Providing a nice cast iron frying pan with a lid would make a big difference in guests’ experience.- The property is not fenced, so there is sheep dung all over the place, including in the driveway and up to the door. For us, the positives far outweighed the negatives! A unique and memorable experience.

Comfortable cottage in a stunning landscape

The owner has thought of every detail to make your stay comfortable. It's around 10-15 minutes drive from Durness but is situated in beautiful mountain landscape. The cottage is easily accessible though, being on the Durness road.

Carbreck cottage has been a lovely, cosy home from home base to explore the stunning surrounding area. It has everything you should need to set up home for a longer stay. We enjoyed the wood burning stoves to warm the cottage on the cooler days. The shower had instant hot water & it was really powerful. The bed was very comfortable & cosy. The views that surround the cottage are breathtaking. The front garden was enclosed, so our dog could be safe from wandering. It’s located conveniently just off the road that leads into Durness just 10 minutes drive away, where fuel, a cash point, various food vans & a very good spar can be found. Also stunning beaches & impressive caves. We personally like to find out of the way beaches & countryside, which was easy enough to do, once out of Durness. We kayaked, bird spotted & swam in the sea. We also walked & mountain biked around the impressive landscape. Gillie was super helpful & an excellent communicator. We loved our stay at Carbreck cottage, it’s obviously a much loved & cared for cottage P&T xx

Deuces Wild in this fabulous cottage

Two sitting rooms; two wood stoves; two bedrooms; two bathrooms (one with toilet and sink only)—and it’s in the wild country. And that’s why I called it Deuces Wild! Spotlessly clean. Kitchen had what we needed. Wood was stocked and rooms were cozy. Near enough to Durness shops but far enough away to be by yourselves. Awesome access to many diverse walking paths, from short and easy to long and challenging. Listing said there was internet, but there was no WiFi. We had cell service, though.

Stunning scenery in beautiful cosy cottage.

We wanted to get away from it all for a few days and what better way to do so than to stay at Carbreck Cottage. The drive along the A838 was an adventure in itself - remote single track for about 40 miles (but plenty of passing places should you meet another car). The views from the cottage are spectacular in all directions. It felt homely as soon as we walked in. The two woodburners were brilliant and were more than ample to keep us warm in the evenings. The cottage was well stocked with everything you needed to hole up and switch off. Mountains, lochs, beaches - it really did have it all. A pity we couldn’t walk on Cranstakkie or Fornarven due to deer stalking taking place but it gives us an excuse to come back. The host, Gillie, was amazing and popped by to check everything was okay and stayed for a nice chat. As we said before we left: we’ve found a little piece of heaven up here in the highlands. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

My husband's family are well known sheep breeders here and in the Borders and have farmed in this area since 1906. David and Gillie and their family have been coming up to Durness for 40 years. Rhigolter is a working farm with 1100 sheep. Carbreck was always a shepherd's cottage on the farm. The father of several of the families in Durness was the last shepherd to live in the cottage with his wife and children. We bought this cottage in 2006.

Why they chose this property

Carbreck was always a shepherd's cottage on the working farm and is still used for shepherds when needed.
.
Severel of the families in Durness whose father's where shepherd's on Balnakiel lived in the cottage.

What makes this property unique

It's huge three foot thick walls certainly make alterations a challenge!
The views across the valley are awe inspiring. You can go out and climb the hills, except 1-20th October when stalking is in progress or you can stoke the woodburner, put your feet up and read your book.Take time out to enjoy the pleasures of as little internet as possible.
