About this property
Luxury completely private Historic Masseria with Large Pool in Ceglie Messapica
Masseria San Michele is a completely unique and important stone masseria, steeped in history, parts of which are over 700 years old. Tastefully restored the large and luxuxy four to five bedroom four bathroom property offers guests the opportunity to enjoy the relaxed Puglian lifestyle. The property was featured in the Daily Mail article 'Perfect Puglia' and is situated at the end of an impressive drive in over 5 acres of grounds with extensive areas of beautiful and unique gardens, mature olive, almond and fig trees, and a fascinating natural grotto with historic frescoes, dating back between 1200 and 900 years. The beautiful large pool (15.5.x.6 m) has covered cabanas on which to relax, a large covered dining area and external kitchen barbeque and boules court. This one of a kind property offers total privacy and seclusion but gives very easy access to the vibrant and charming Puglian town of Ceglie Messapica, famed for its restaurants. The house and grounds are perfect for families, the house is comfortably and stylishly furnished and offers very spacious living areas, a/c in all bedrooms and modern facilities. Outside there are several seating areas to louge and relax, outdoor sofas, a large outdoor dining tables for 10, a poolside veranda with bbq and outdoor kitchen and a table for 8 and a further veranda which leads off the original 'cantina' of the house with a table seating 8 with BBQ. From the rooftops there are extensive views over surrounding olive groves. The cantina is the heart of the house, where our guests like to congregate around the dining table. One of the main highlights of the property are the incredible gardens, unique in the area with hundreds of varieties of mediterranean and dry garden plants. Private cook, cooking lessons, olive oil and wine tasting, local guides and cycling tours can all arranged for you.

About the host
Hosted by Ian Campbell-Smith

I work in the fashion buisness in London and am interested in design, architecture, interiors and gardens. I am very proud to be the owner of this beautiful and historic property which I had restored over a period of nearly two years. I have owned the house since 2006 and now take great pleasure in sharing it with our guests.
Why they chose this property
I consider myself very lucky to be the owner of this unique and beautiful property, which is steeped in history. I love this area of Italy for its simplicity and friendly, open hearted people. It is really no surprise why the Italians themselves choose this particular area of Puglia for their own summer holidays: fantastic weather, great fresh local food and produce and a choice of beautiful beaches with sparklingly clear water.
What makes this property unique
This is a large, one of a kind masseria, originally owned by the Knights of Malta, The records for the house are in the Vatican Library. Apart from this the property is unique in that it offers many areas to relax, both inside and out. A large plus point is its location, in the countryside, surrounded by thousands of olive trees but under five minutes drive to the town.
Our guests have genuinely enjoyed staying in this amazing house, and always comment about the gardens and beautiful pool area, and how comfortable and spacious the house is.
