St Croix Du Verdon is in the unspoilt heart of Provence which is characterised by deep valleys and snow capped mountains to the north and gentle undulating fields of lavender, vines and sunflowers in the south and west.
It is where the Haut Var meets the Alpes-d'Haute Provence and is known as 'Green Provence'. This area offers a very different pace of life to the more bustling south coast and it is characterised by forested mountains, vineyards, lavender fields and olive groves between beautiful ancient hilltop villages and small towns.
Nearby towns and villages such as Riez, Aups, and Forcalquier still thrive on their traditional industries of making honey, cheese, cultivating truffles and pressing olive oil.
Riez, only 10 min from St Croix has a wonderful street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, two supermarkets and many lovely cafes, shops and restaurants.
The area is probably most famous for the 'Gorges du Verdon', one of Europe's biggest canyons. The gorge itself is at the head of the Lac and makes for a multitude of outdoor activities. There are awe inspiring roads, cycle routes and walks all around. For the more adventurous there is climbing and rafting. The Verdon river which formed the gorge runs into the Lac (Ste Croix) and then downstream there are further gorges and additional Lacs (Quinson, and Esparron) for further exploration.
