About this property

Central Bridport, quiet cottage formerly part of officer's barracks

You will not find a better location in the whole of Bridport! Very quietly situated in a 'no through' road just off East Street. This stone built terraced cottage is 5 mins walk to Bucky Doo Sq where there is live music on Saturday market days. Bridport is situated on the River Brit and was originally a port. It was known for its rope and net making and many of the alleyways and twittens originate because of the need to lay out the rope and nets. Situated only 1.5m from stunning Jurassic coast (fantastic fossil hunting) and West Bay (location of Broadchurch). You may bump into local celebrities (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Martin Clunes, PJHarvey, Billy Bragg and others) plus London celebs who come to support events at the Electric Palace, where groups regularly play in the revived Art Deco cinema. There is also the Arts Centre hosting an eclectic range of art exhibitions, films and entertainment. Annual events include Food & Beer Festival, Literary Festival, Hat Festival & Open Art Studio week. St Michaels Trading Estate (behind South Street) has a Vintage & Retro Fair one Sunday in every month and Bridport market (stalls along East St, West St, South St and many side roads) is buzzing every Wednesday and Saturday. Bridport has a reputation as The centre for 'foodies' in the South West with it’s amazing range of eateries to suit all tastes and nationalities. West Bay is within walking distance (1.5 miles) and has fabulous beaches, very good restaurants - (try The Rise, Station Kitchen, Watch House) - and a 3 storey warehouse 'The Custom House' of vintage goods, local produce, bric a brac and clothes situated right on the beach. Choice of eateries is from sophisticated fine dining to colourful beach huts for take aways.

Lovely cottage, shame about parking.
Lovely little cottage, but the most ‘lived in’ Vbro/Abnb place we have ever stayed in. It’s clean and tidy and well located, easy access to restaurants and shops and ideally located to explore the famous Jurassic Coast. The cottage had most things we needed for our short stay. Parking is however the biggest issue with this property as there is only one hours parking allowed outside the property as it’s permit holders only (no permit left for guests to use) and then it’s a case of hunt a space (there were literally none when we arrived and my husband spent a long time driving around trying to find one. Details say park in the carpark in Bridport, but we did not want to leave our newish car in a public carpark over a weekend, especially NYE weekend. The internet service is also very poor and travelling with a family who all have devices meant no one could actually download a webpage. There is also a Ring doorbell camera/light outside the property entrance, which although for security I’m sure is great, but as guests, it very much feels as though your comings and goings are being monitored. In addition, a sign saying on leaving can you strip all the beds (something I have done in every property I’ve stayed in without being asked) asked so blatantly when you’re paying a considerable cleaning fee does not sit that comfortably.

Another lovely stay
Back again and just as enjoyable and cottage just as clean. Also blessed by the superb late heat wave. - spent most of our time at The Hive Beach, followed up by munching our way through the local eateries in Bridport. Happy times! Thank you!

Short stay
We had a short stay in bridport. The location of this property was perfect. Walking distance to the high street with lots of pubs and places to eat. Cottage was very cosy, comfortable and very clean. Parking was a bit of a struggle due to the time of year but this was communicated to us via the hosts once we had booked. Overall great stay and would definatly stay again 😊

No 29 Barrack Street has been in our family for very many years and has been lived in by various members of the family at different stages of their lives, usually when bringing up small children. Family still live and work in the area - having graduated to larger detached houses to accommodate their growing children! - we are therefore familiar with all the local eateries, best places to visit and willing to pass on any local information.

Why they chose this property

The location - see our reviews - Although close to the main street in this ancient market town we are tucked away in a 'no through' road so you will get a decent night's sleep. The garden is secluded with an eclectic mix of trees and shrubs and whether you want sun or shade during the summer months there are plenty of seating areas.

What makes this property unique

The proximity to Bridport's main shopping street and all the different eating places whilst enjoying the quiet road and tranquil garden setting makes this a place to remember. We are 1.5 miles to the cost at West Bay and only 7 miles from Charmouth Heritage Centre where the 200 million year old fossilised sea dragon is currently on display. The fossil was discovered on the nearby Monmouth Beach.
