Spiral Staircase Leads To The Lofted Bedroom With Wall To Wall Knotty Pine.
The Loft is set amongst a circle of trees next to the entrance to the Blueberry Trail. It receives some welcome southern sunshine in the winter through the big living room/dining room windows.
You enter the Loft through a wraparound screened-in porch and then into the kitchen. Off to the left are two rocking chairs with foot stools in front of the free standing wood burning fireplace. Ahead sits the dining table in front of the large, south-facing, viewing windows. Also on the first floor is a 3/4 bath with a shower. You ascend up the spiral staircase to the loft where two single beds reside. The Kitchen has a small refrigerator with a freezer, a two-burner cook top, microwave, coffee pot, crock pot, and a toaster oven. A CD player, air conditioner, floor/table fans as well as ceiling fans, WiFi, and an outdoor grill are also available.

Short Trip
We only stayed two nights. It was a very cute and cozy cabin. It did have a smell (likely the fire place mixed with carpet). Could use a deep cleaning. We booked on Vrbo and our reservation was not found until we called. He was able to get us into the cabin still and offered a bigger one if it was too small for us. We ended up enjoying the coziness!
My husband and I stayed here due to the accessibility of the Soo Line ATV trail. It was perfect for what we needed; shower, small
Kitchen stocked with the basics and QUIET. Only downside for us was the bugs! Went through 2 full cans of bug spray in 2 days for 2 people. Overall enjoyed our stay and do plan on doing so again in the near future
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the property, but it wasn't the most comfortable visit. The place was cute upon first glance, though much smaller on the inside than we expected. More tiny house than cabin, and one that has a bit of a smell. Like other reviewers mentioned, there were many notes scattered around the cabin instructing guests to do/not do certain things. To be fair, I get the purpose is to ensure maintenance of the cabin, but it would have been nicer to list those items on a sheet of paper on the table. The fireplace was cozy, and the cabin was stocked with a good amount of firewood, but beyond that you have to pay for extra. Both lighters were out of lighter fluid, fortunately there were matches. The loft got pretty toasty, especially if you had a fire going at any point in the day. We tried to use the small fan to cool us down, but it sounded like an airplane taking off. The rocking chairs and beds were not the most relaxing, maybe more supportive pillows would do the trick. The kitchen is well stocked, though there were some random jars labeled but empty (ex. one that said 'Popcorn'). There is a sauna on-site, clearly labeled on the property map. Upon checking it out we learned the sauna is heated manually by fire and takes up to two hours to be ready for use. It was great to have Wi-fi, but don't plan on watching any movies/TV because it will take all night to load. The trails were nice, and the location was very picturesque and remote. Overall it was nice enough, but due to the issues addressed above we will not be returning.
Lovely loft and cozy space. The grounds are beautiful and quiet. We had a relaxing time and enjoyed the fireplace too. Just what we both needed. Definitely will be back. Thank you
Due to a longer stay (6 nights) we appreciated being offered another cabin that was a bit larger than the one originally booked. The cabin Birches has seen a few guests and may need a bit of a deep cleaning (which we understand could be challenging in the natural setting). Otherwise, for the time we were there all amenities were sufficient and in working order. Couldn't see staying in this cabin with kids and for this long a time. Some people brought pet dogs or HOVs. Our timing in mid-July, after rains, was unfortunate as there were a lot of bugs on the surrounding trails. Did use a bug spray but it didn't seem to deter the "deer(?) flies" that became a nuisance. Beautiful nature and setting otherwise! Property is rather close to the road so while sitting outside one can hear traffic roaring by, even further out back. Not an issue when inside. The animals (several horses and three ponies) were concentrated in a small area right at the front entry along with owner's houses which gives a bit of farm feel. A pair of trumpeter swans in owner's possession was a surprise - we were warned to avoid them due to being aggressive with strangers. This made us shy away from taking walks around the 'front pond'/ labyrinth/ gazebo... Made trips to Duluth, other state parks and Mille Lacs Lake area. Overall, a nice rustic place for a short stay. Thanks!
We both enjoyed our stay in “The Loft.” It is a wonderful place to come and escape for relaxation. The cabin had everything we needed and more. The trails through the woods were adventurous and beautiful. We will definitely be back again!
More to do at the property than individual cabin listings suggest
Note: we ended up staying in a different cabin at the same property, so the comments apply to a different cabin than the one pictured.. The owner cleared the change with us in advance.
To get the negatives out of the way: the biggest issue I have is that there was a dramatic upcharge for the cabins rented through vrbo compared to the rates listed on the the property's own website. We definitely paid more than we needed to.
My only complaint with the cabin itself is that the hot water smelled like rotten eggs. Pretty common for water heaters that aren't used frequently, as might be the case over the winter months, but the water heater probably needs to be flushed or disinfected or something.
Other than that, we were very happy with the property. The cabin was cute and clean. Kitchen was adequately supplied with the usual slightly random assortment of cookware and utensils (7 colanders but no mixing bowl that I could find, for example), but that's part of the charm of cabin-ing and making do. We really enjoyed tromping around on the trails, and lingering by the beaver pond. Nice pine/birch forest with marked trails, and a wetland area with wooden walkways. The whole property was extremely quiet and peaceful. It's also located a short drive from a variety of locations once you've exhausted what's available right out the door (we spent one afternoon in Duluth, for example). I think we'll be back, but we'll know to book directly next time.

Not exactly what I thought
Check in was great as we were a late check in. Cabin was very cluttered, unorganized, and so many notes all over. Walking trails weren’t that great. There are 7 properties most can be viewed from cabin so you are not alone. Still not sure where the sauna is. It was a different experience. This cabin would be great for anyone who doesn’t mind clutter and staying by yourself.
What a lovely setting to getaway for the weekend and cozy up to the fire after long days hiking at Banning St. Park. with my daughter. We loved the loft and the feeling of being alone, no close neighbors. Lovely setting. We highly recommend it.
Really enjoyed my stay at the Shire, in The Loft. Lovely little cabin with everything I needed. Enjoyed the shorter trails that were right on the property (a few steps out my door!) and the quiet setting. Looking forward to returning.
Amazing property. The organized/paved hiking trails were great. Our dogs loved it as well. Such a cute area. The loft is just secluded enough from the other cabins. Definitely coming back and trying it out in a different season!
We like the small cozy cottage feel. We would hike the trails every morning and again in the evening with our two dogs.
We never met another person on the trails.
Would end the night sitting by the fire place.
Also enjoyed watching the birds at the bird feeder.
Only bad part is finding out how much more expensive it was to book through VRBO.
Our vacation here was great! We loved the cozy cabin vibe and our cat had a great time too! The wood-fire stove was great to have and keep us nice and warm. Make sure to watch your head while walking around or your bump it on the spiral stairs. And if you’re tall you might have to duck to take a proper shower. Overall it was a great time!
This was our first time getting away since covid started. Because one of us is high risk, we haven’t been able to do much. We enjoyed our stay and loved hiking the trails on the property with our dogs. We’d stay again and recommend staying at the property.
It definitely was not what we expected. I did not do enough research or read the description well enough. That's on me. It was a bit run down, dirty and hot and humid inside. It had an odor to it. The A/C did not really work (one window unit blowing hot air). There was hair on the bathroom floor and the "screen in porch" was too small for two people to fit in. Also, the screen was torn and had holes so it wasn't keeping any bugs out anyway. The spiral stair case went up to a loft in which there were two twin beds. It was a bit uncomfortable in this cabin.
They provided everything we needed, we just brought the food! Owners were very accommodating and The Loft was a great space to be in. We loved being there and can’t wait to go back! Thank you
We had a lovely time. Sweet cabin in a beautiful location.

About the host
Hosted by Michael Bonnette
I have spent the last 25 years of my life firmly entrenched in the research and development world with a vast majority of that time spent in the interventional medical industry. With my creativity and engineering degree, I have managed to receive 70 US and foreign patents with 50 submissions still pending. Many of these ideas have resulted in devices which have helped people in one form or another, and in 2013, I decided I wanted to help people in another way. I acquired this property which will help people escape and relax in the beauty of the Minnesota Woods!
The property has 120 acres of private lands which sits within 68 thousand acres of the Solana State Forest. The Soo Line Trail also travels right through my property. In 2013, the property was purchased by my family and has now become the Shire in the Woods. A special place, with the look and feel of a Tolkien inspired landscape, now located in "Middle Minnesota".
The Shire in the Woods was formerly solely a retreat center which was founded in 1989 by three Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet with a vision of creating a place where people can spend time quieting the mind and opening the heart and spirit. They recognized the need for individuals living in a modern, fast paced society to be able to retreat to a quiet, nurturing place, thus replenishing the soul and deepening their connection with self, nature, each other, and the universe. The Shire still has it's roots within that theme, and it has grown much more for everyone to enjoy!
Why they chose this property
Welcome to the Shire in the Woods, where the natural surroundings will nourish and rejuvenate your soul! Located 18 miles east of northern Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota, we are tucked away at the heart of the Solana State Forest and have the Soo Line South Trail running right alongside us. Relax with a good book in front of a fireplace or take a stroll in the beautiful woods. The Shire can serve you, your family and friends, facilitate special groups, workshops, and meetings, host a wedding, hold a family reunion, and more! No matter where you are at in your writing practice, the natural beauty and tranquility of the Shire is perfect for a writers retreat. The outdoors and especially the circle drive would be great for demonstrations with horses for example, or you can come and just be a hermit! Whatever your event or occasion, we will work with you to best serve your needs.
Our private, wooded retreat has seven, year round dwellings and more. There are four smaller cabins (The Woodlands, The Birches, The Meadows, and The Loft), The Cedar House, The Tree Lodge, and a gathering space, movie theatre, presentation media space, and library in The Octagon (unless privately reserved).
Other features of the Shire: • Screened-in gazebo. • Wood burning sauna. • 5 miles of groomed trails. • A rose garden. • A labyrinth. • Beaver, frog, and turtle pond. • Tree swings and hammock. • Outdoor fire pits and indoor fireplaces. • Access to the Soo Line Trail. • Access to many miles of trails in the Solana State Forest. • And much more including our horses, a miniature donkey, and a miniature horse. As a guest, you can experience our animals antics and social systems, pet them, and with prior arrangements have guided interactions or feed them treats.
All of the places are arranged in their own unique setting such that you feel like you are the only one there!
What makes this property unique
