About this property
Perfect spot for a holiday with family or friends with private river and a pool
Located in the gastronomical heaven of Gascogne, the property is a private estate with 15 hectares of private land, 1 km of river Adour, featuring access for fishing and kayaking. Two delux Gemini 2 seater kayaks are provided as well as terrain bicycles.
Children friendly lagoon type swimming pool is alarmed and has several levels of depths to please all ages of guests. Children splash at the shallow end while adults can enjoy a decent deep at the 1.8 m deep end.
Private terrain consists of two large meadows, parkland and one kilometre river bank.
There are two buildings on the property-the old mill Le Moulin De Marrast is yet to be restored, but the Millers cottage has been lovingly renovated and features all modern comforts: fully equipped kitchen, hot showers, flat screen TVs, Free Wifi, indoor and outdoor dining area, barbecue, log fire and central oil heating in winter and restored bread oven for a pizza or a grand roast with rosemary from the kitchen garden, enough place for a family or a group of friends. No parking restriction, tons of space for walking, breathing and breaking away from it all!
There are four en-suite bedrooms and a spare bedroom with a communal WC and shower facility provide plenty of privacy for all. Towels for both: showers and swimming pool are included in the rent, as well as bed linen.
The property is very private and quiet, however in a close driving proximity to the nearest supermarket, petrol station, local villages with coffee shops, regional produce markets, restaurants, banks and post offices, churches and picturesque village squares.
A must visit is a little town of the oldest spas in Europe Eugenie les Bains, only 6 km from the house, Marciac jazz festival is 45 km away, skiing village of La Mongie is over an hour drive, as well as Biarritz and a Spanish port city of Saint Sebastian.
Both sea front towns are stylish and memorable places for a day trip or even an overnight stay. In Eugenie les Bains there is a 3* Michelin restaurant with the great Chef Michel Guerard heading the kitchen. For a more casual experience, his Auberge la Ferme aux Grives is a perfect lunch or dinner option.
Saint Sebastian is also a home to a film festival and a world leading conference for world renown Chefs. Needless to say the gastronomical scene is exquisite.
The oldest Armagnac refinery is not far either. An old estate of count Bayonne left to the monastery was making Armagnac there since 11th century and now offers a guided tour, tasting Armagnac and Flocs, as well as shopping opportunities for the connoceurs of rare milisimes. Domaine Armagnac d'Ognoas is a great place to visit.
Nearest airports are Pau, Biarritz, Bordeaux. From the UK an overnight ferry to St. Malo and a drive down proved to be an effective and stress free option to travel for a family with kids. Extra bonus is sightseeing around France if the time is available to go off onto country roads.
For a group of 10 or less it's a great French escape.

About the host
Hosted by Margarita Shalimova
My name is Margarita. I am originally from south west of Russia, the region is most famous for Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014. I traveled and worked in the Middle East, Europe and the UK. I fell in love with Moulin De Marrast in 2003 and since then the cottage has been restored and the Mill is yet to be renovated. Gascogne is my passion. I love this part of France: the people, the food and it's history. We go to our Mill as often as we can to spend time in the nature, cook and swim and go on the river on our kayaks. My family loves staying at the Mill, although often it's a working break, as there's is always something to do, but the peace, climate, food and its tranquility gives us strength to go back to London and face the everyday. Often we are joined by our friends with children. Children adore this property, my daughter comes up with fairy stories as surroundings fire up her imagination. We often take a ferry and drive to the house, there is much freedom and no restriction on luggage this way. It's a unique place for family and friends to enjoy. There is a lot to do on the property and in the neighboring villages. Gastronomy is exquisite and I love cooking all sorts of food, so it's a perfect combination. Family time and harmony is my priority and it's very easy to have both at Moulin de Marrast. We take some day trips to Spain or the Atlantic coast, however, often it's just time for me, my family and friends - precious moments we can't have enough of.
Why they chose this property
Gascogne is just great. Gastronomically, climate wise, proximity to the airports, the coast and skiing, the mountains or the wine tours, old Armagnac destilliraries-its all here. There are only 4 Mills like this in France. Ours is yet to be restored. The house was restored in 2007. Its great to have forest and river outside of your window, and yet in the quiet and vast space the house has all the modern comforts. It's a very special place, where time stops for me. I can be in the moment, totally at peace and focused on my most important: my family. We cook, enjoy each other, play with our children, invite friends to come and stay with us, listen to the sounds of nature, have coffee and croissants on the village square, go to the tavern of Michel Guerard in Eugenie les Baines and just have the world to ourselves.
We buy good wine and cheese to take home, we bring back basque delicacies, sometimes we indulge in day trips to Biarritz or Saint Sebastian, but mostly we are keeping busy at the property. There are games, kayaks, bicycles, books and films to stay entertained. We go for walks. On our 15 ha of land and nice stroll after supper is what the body needs and nature offers a welcome break from our city life and work. We always feel recharged after visiting our French get away!

What makes this property unique
There are only 4 mills like ours in France. It's a monumental landmark on the property but is yet to be restored. The miller's cottage is about 200 years old as well as the Mill, full of traditional features and restored to offer all modern comforts. Both buildings are of a landaise "sponge cake" cladding, which gives the rooms a unique regional touch and character. While being located a couple of kilometres from the nearest village, the house has large private terrain, so it's very quiet, the river is good for fishing, kayaking or just bird watching. The property is also a home to a bird sanctuary. The swimming pool is build as a lagoon so it's shallow at one end and deep at the other-great place to socialise and chill knowing that children can safely splash too. There are several dining areas to enjoy. River side sunsets are pretty spectacular. Villages are very close and all the amenities are nearby. Fantastic place to get away from it all and enjoy nature and a good company. It's a great place for kayaking on the river, fishing, walking and cycling, visiting local markets, going for wine tours and Armagnac distilleries. Our neighbours in the Chateaux de Marrast has listed their beautiful garden and now give tours in May and June for 5 euros per person in the afternoons. Their garden is a must see and is being called The best garden in Aquitaine. A day can be as busy or as lazy as one decides, either way it's a unique place to enjoy.
