Vila Afonso is a lovely country house bed and breakfast from the 17th century carefully restored on 1999 in order to maintain the Madeira's traditional style of architecture.
Inserted in organic farming and with an excellent panoramic view from mountain to sea, the house is surrounded by gardens, banana groves and vineyards which produces the famous Madeira Wine.
Vila Afonso was classified as a Country House by the Regional Secretary of Tourism for the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Surrounded by vineyards and banana trees, the Vila's garden has an outstanding view of the mountain and the city of Câmara de Lobos, a perfekt relaxing area. For those who enjoy to walk, to explore, do some tours or trips, the central location offers an easy and quick access to any part of the island.
The house is thought to have been built in the seventeenth century, and belonged to Manuel Pinto Correia (Administrator of Câmara de Lobos at the end of the nineteenth century) after inheriting it from his uncle Alferes Sebastião Nunes Pereira. It has been in the family for four generations, and was renovated in 1999, paying particular attention to maintaining the simple and traditional Madeira style of architecture, preserving and outlining its content with natural raw materials, in such a way as to reveal the stone face . This stone construction is not like the traditional basalt, but uses local stonemasonry, which is now an extinct practice.
Vila Afonso has a biologic agricultural area of around 7000m2 where you can witness the production of wine and banana cultivation first hand.
Currently, the predominant cultivation is the grape type Tinta Negra, which gives us the generous Madeira Wine. Even today, in the villa's tavern, you can find reservations dating back to the middle of last century.
All rooms have private bathrooms, safe, cable TV, heating and use of a drier. The bed linen is changed twice weekly, and towels daily.
Breakfast is a buffet, which can be served in the lounge, swimming pool or garden areas.
