About this property

Spacious house, for upto 8, family & pet friendly, by the sea, with garden

CREAG-an-FHITHICH (pronounced craig-an-eeoch) meaning 'Raven's Rock', is available as a self catering holiday house for a relaxing or busy holiday on the sea shore at Loch Melfort, in Argyll, on the West Coast of the Highlands of Scotland. When the weather is good, the sun shines on the house all day and meals can be taken alfresco on the picnic table, even out of season. The beautiful views of the loch, marina and hills, with the isles of Shuna, Luing and Scarba in the distance, are ever-changing. The sunsets are breathtaking.

• The stone and slate Victorian manse was built in 1850. It has been modernised and is a comfortable house, whilst retaining its original character. It is not a 'boutique' residence. It is the family home.
• Watch the seals, cormorants, eider duck, varied sea birds, the elusive otter, pine martens and red squirrels, all from the garden. Fish on the sea loch from the shore in front of the house. Local freshwater lochs can be fished by permit from the village Post Office.

Creag-an-Fhithich is Donald's family home. Alas we do not live in it but in Wales. However his relations are all around. Mrs Bailey, our housekeeper and caretaker, is at the end of a telephone and on a computer for emails, for problems etc. She will also be your point of contact for Check-In. Donald is quite happy to receive telephone calls between 0900hrs and 2100hrs and emails. Being a dinosaur, he does not really understand texting etc. We will help where we can!

There are four routes from the south, via:
1. M74, Stirling, Doune, Crianlarich, Tyndrum*, Oban, then south to Kilmelford. 127 miles, 3hrs. I think this is the easiest route.
2. M74, Erskine Bridge, Tarbet, Crianlarich, Tyndrum*, Oban, then south to Kilmelford. 117 miles, 2¾hrs. Quaint between Tarbet and Crianlarich.
3. M74, Erskine Bridge, Tarbet, Arrocher, Rest and Be Thankful, Inveraray, Loch Awe, Oban, then south to Kilmelford. 116 miles, 2¾hrs. Beautiful road from Inveraray to Loch Awe.
4. M74, Erskine Bridge, Tarbet, Arrocher, Rest and Be Thankful, Inveraray, Lochgilphead, north to Kilmelford. 110miles, 2¾hrs. Twisty road from Inveraray to Kilmelford
*Tyndrum, east on the left before the 'Green Wellie', the 'Real Food Cafe' is well-worth a stop for its excellent fish and chips!

CREAG-an-FHITHICH: enjoy a charming south facing Victorian house; modernised; retaining its original character, in a large fenced garden; stunning ever changing views over Loch Melfort to the Isles. Sleeps upto 8, in 4 bedrooms. The sunsets are breath taking. TV; WiFi; Relax; Watch wildlife; Spot seals and otters; Paddle in the loch; Walk; Explore; Fish; Picnic in the garden.

Fantastic place to call home while on vacation
We planned a return to Scotland and when we found Creag-an-Fhithich, a gorgeous house on a loch, we grabbed it! Room for our kids and their kids. Marvelous sights at every turn, friendly people wherever we went, activities too numerous to see all of them. There is not enough room to recount how thrilled we all are at our stay! Generous floor plan, comfortable furnishings. Housekeeper and owners readily available and responsive. Rate is very reasonable.

About the host

Host profile image
We are currently living in South Wales where my husband was working until he retired. We both come from military backgrounds so we have lived in many houses.

Why they chose this property

My husband's grandfather bought this house in 1934 and lived here for the rest of his life. Donald came here first as a young child and considers the area his home as his family have lived here for generations. I have been holidaying here since 1974 and love coming here for the relaxing atmosphere and pace of life.

What makes this property unique

I love staying here, and we do as often as we can. The views from the house and garden are delightful. The house was built in about 1850 and we have just re-pointed the stone walls, so it is looking rather fine! The light changes constantly, and it is fun to look out for the seals, otters and the birds that fly over the loch, now including sea eagles!. I spend most of my time gardening and chatting to the people, walking past!
