About this property

A very private 3 bedroom villa with large pool, fantastic sea & mountain views.

Villa Maria is a beautiful modern villa that enjoys a very private and peaceful setting with incomparable sea views and sunsets, and yet is only a few minutes away from beaches, tavernas, and shops. The villa has been recently built by its charming owners, Yiannis and Maria, with whom we have been working since 1999 at their other rental property. They have utilised their vast knowledge of working with visitors to Crete to ensure that Villa Maria exceeds your expectation of a holiday villa. Located on a hillside just above the village of Plaka, the villa has absolutely stunning panoramic views of Souda Bay, The Akrotiri Peninsula, the Turkish Castle at Aptera, small villages and The White Mountains which are snow capped for 6 months a year. Despite the rural location surrounded by a natural rocky landscape covered in almond and olive trees, Villa Maria is only 3 minutes by car to the charming village square of Plaka, or 5 minutes to the beaches and many amenities in Almyrida.

Set in large grounds that are completely surrounded by a low natural stone wall and fencing, Villa Maria guarantees total privacy. The fully tiled pool and pool terrace have an elevated position above the olive groves below ensuring a glorious uninterrupted view of Souda Bay. The design of the villa has been carefully thought out in order to bring your living area into the outdoors, so that you can fully appreciate the outstanding views at all times. Therefore there are many terraces for both sun and shade, and an ample supply of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, umbrellas and sun-beds, as well as a traditional brick barbeque. The spacious upstairs sun terrace has 360 degree views of the entire area and is perhaps the best place from which to relax with a drink on a warm summer night whilst watching a colourful sunset. The villa has a large front garden area that is gravelled and has plenty of room for private, gated parking. The front garden features 6 raised flower beds that are surrounded by stone walls and have been planted with ficus trees, bottle brush plants, Washingtonian palms, a number of mature olive trees, and a mass of colourful white and pink flowers. The front driveway and parking area also have ground level flower beds that feature carob trees, palms, geraniums and mesembryanthum flowering ground cover.

Villa Maria has been painted a pretty pale buttermilk colour and has been furnished throughout to a very high standard. The décor has fun features such as the fireplace or an occasional wall painted in a bright or contrasting colour, and this combines perfectly with the stylish furniture which includes comfortable cream leather couches, a wood and iron dining table that is topped with green glass and has matching chairs with cream leather seats, and a king size dark wood bed and matching bedside cabinets in the double bedroom. All modern comforts have been provided including satellite TV, DVD and CD players, dishwasher and washing machine, white aluminium doors, windows, and shutters with mosquito screens on all the windows, and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms and the living room. There is a fireplace and the a/c units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater. Free unlimited WIFI is supplied at Villa Maria.

*** As of January 01, 2024, the Greek government have replaced the old “bed tax” with a new tax that is applied to all stays in short-term rental accommodation in Greece. The Climate Resilience Levy is a response to the devastating forest fires and floods that Greece has experienced in recent years, with the government hoping to generate extra funding that will go towards financing reconstruction, supporting victims, and increasing the country’s defences against future natural disasters.

The owners of all short-term rental accommodation are legally obliged to collect the Climate Resilience Levy as a separate tax for all overnight stays (per villa) as follows:
€10.00 per night on stays between March 01 and October 31, and €4.00 per night on stays between November 01 and February 28/29.

The Vrbo system does not yet have a section for collecting the Climate Resilience Levy and we have, therefore, had to add it to the billing section as an extra fee which will show on the booking as a Host Fee (until Vrbo update their system).

Whilst we understand the potential budget concerns of our guests, this tax/levy is beyond our control and we encourage our guests to see this as a way of contributing to the protection of the planet and the beautiful area where they are holidaying.

Great views
We had a lovely stay and enjoyed the Villa Maria immensely. The showers need some work and the wifi is limited to groundfloor but otherwise all as described and an excellent venue.

Lovely villa, splendid location, difficult access track.
Arrived in the dark and were grateful for the taxi guidance as the track was somewhat daunting at first. Pleased with the villa and location in the daylight. The pool looked very inviting. Good welcome pack and information inside the villa, we used the car tour book more than expected because the weather was very disappointing and had obviously not been really hot for some time as the pool was numbingly cold. Villa needs outside light which operates when the sun doesn’t shine, we found access not easy in the nighttime when the weather was cloudy and wet. Also quite a number of light bulbs need replacing both inside and outside. Maria and Yiannis were welcoming and helpful as was Artemis with her excellent English though I think Maria has more English than we have Greek! One criticism is that it is very easy to lock yourself out as there is no handle on the outside of the kitchen door, this may be quite deliberate but we were forced to leave the key in the front door as an emergency measure when it was windy. Overall we had a lovely holiday which did end with four days of bright sunshine when the outside light by the front door actually worked in the evening. We also really enjoyed the splendid and friendly tavernas in Plaka village. Thanks to all, very impressed with VCH - efficient organisation, would certainly use them again if holidaying in the Aponokras area.

About the host

Hosted by Villas Crete Holidays

Host profile image
Villa Maria is exclusively booked by Villas Crete Holidays which is a registered Tourist Office, based in Hampshire, England. Whilst most travel companies cover many different countries and/or areas of Greece and Crete, we at Villas Crete Holidays only work in the North West of Crete and we specialise in the Apokoranas region, just east of the historic Venetian town of Chania. The Apokoronas (including the villages of Almyrida, Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Plaka and Gavalohori) has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort area that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, stunning views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, excellent tavernas, and archaeological sites.

The director of Villas Crete Holidays is Frankie Miles. She has worked with rental villas on Crete for more than 23 years and has written the best selling guide book "Crete on the Road". The book includes detailed directions and information to all the major tourist attractions, as well as many hidden sites. Also in the book is the only existing map of the National Highway showing all of the entrances/exits and distances.

Both the company itself, and Frankie's book have been featured and recommended in articles in major British newspapers including the Sunday Mail and the Sunday Telegraph, as well as smaller publications such as Greece Magazine.

Why they chose this property

This is a very popular villa because of the privacy that it affords it's guests. The views are wonderful and the location seems rural but is within walking distance of the tavernas and shops in Plaka, and only a few minutes by car to the beaches in Almyrida. The pool is larger than average and has steps that gently go into the water.

What makes this property unique

All of our villa owners employ a local house manager who you can call should you need any help at the villa itself.

We, at Villas Crete Holidays can help you with all aspects of your holiday including good value, reliable car hire, airport transfers, local information about shops, beaches, tavernas etc, detailed driving directions for many routes. We can also give your contact details for private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, big game fishing, guided walking, and guided coach excursions. Our office staff speak English, Greek, and a little French, and have a vast list of local contacts.

Most importantly, because we handle many villas, in the unlikely event that there is an unforeseen problem at your villa, we can usually offer you an alternative villa (although this cannot be guaranteed in high season).

We have many years experience working in tourism on Crete, and most importantly this experience is specifically related to villa rentals. We use all of our knowledge and local contacts to ensure that your holiday goes off smoothly from start to finish, from booking the villa that is most suitable for you, all the way through to your departure at the end of your holiday.
