Located 5 miles west of La Farge, Wisconsin in the heart of the Kickapoo Valley is lodging by the day or week on a 300 acre beef ranch. At all times of the year there is a population ranging from 50-300 head of cows and calves. The bunkhouse is a renovated 100 year old two story farmhouse with 2 baths and 5 bedrooms. It sits atop a high ridge overlooking the Kickapoo Valley below. It's located only a few miles from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve and borders the Mississippi Valley Conservatory. It is not a luxury rental, rather a clean, old farmstead in a beautiful ranch surroundings. If you are looking for a reasonable place to stay while you enjoy the rural atmosphere, this could be the place for you! It is fully furnished and available for a small or large group.

Have a clean place to stay while you tap the resources of the area. Hunting, trout fishing, bicycling, snowmobiling, skiing, horseback riding, kayaking, outdoor activities are all available in the area. Simply bring your own food and beverages. Sit out in the backyard and enjoy the scenery while grilling out on outdoor grill or around an open campfire. Firewood will be provided. All linens, cooking utensils, kitchen and eating materials, stove, refrigerator, towels, housekeeping materials are provided. TV and DVD for movies and internet with free WiFi as of March 24th, 2017. A lot of peace and quiet. Fine restaurants, all denomination churches, hospitals are close.

This is indeed an old farmhouse. Spacious interior, and with nice vistas. Right on a major thoroughfare, so traffic noise detracted a bit from the otherwise peaceful location. Hosts are nearby, helpful and friendly.

Great relaxing, quiet stay

Although we only stayed two nights we were very pleased with our Vrbo choice. The property is a 100-year old farmhouse, literally right "on the farm." The house is spacious, super clean and comfortable. Janis is a very pleasant host; communicative and responsive. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Amazing Stay!

Couldnt have asked for a better place to stay. The property is exactly as described and has amazing views of the surrounding countryside. The house is beautiful, clean, and full of history. Janice was a wonderful host and was quick and courteous with all communication. She was so sweet and made sure our stay was perfect. We will definitely look to stay here again when visiting the area.

Kayaking the Kickapoo

Janis met us and checked in to make sure everything was ok. Views are amazing. The property was just as described. We enjoyed gathering around the dining room table, in the living room and the firepit. The house was charming.

Peace, quiet, and relaxation in the bunk house! Our hosts were so kind and accommodating and the house had everything we needed. The nearby reserve has amazing hiking. We had an amazing trip with our three boys and our dog and we will be back!

Great view. Host is friendly and understanding. They were very attentive to our needs. The house is very clean and quiet even though it is next to a highway. We enjoyed the stay very much.

Driftless weekend

What a delight! Janis is a wonderful host, met us at the property and showed us all around. The location is ideal - minutes from the Kickapoo Reserve, and down the road from Viroqua. The house is a lovely old farmhouse with beautiful wood details, comfortable furniture, fully equipped kitchen, and beautiful views.

Cozy and comfortable

We enjoyed our family Thanksgiving weekend at the bunkhouse. Janis and Brent are great hosts and made sure we had everything we needed. It will be a Thanksgiving we will always remember! We would like to go back sometime.

Looking for some space

We loved the rolling, expansive farmland. It made for some really long, exciting sledding runs for me and the kids. Brent and Janis were very kind and gracious hosts.

Quaint farmhouse

This rental is very fun and clean. The farmhouse sure has character. It's quite beautiful and cozy, yet big enough to accommodate many. I love having campfires!!! My only complaint is that my husband and I came there for privacy and that wasn't respected. We are in our 50's. We don't need to be checked up on.

A Farm for Everyone

All our family enjoyed staying at the Bunkhouse. Grandma and Grampa loved the peaceful setting and clear night sky. The 8- and 10-year-old boys were fascinated by the cattle and explored every inch of the barnyard playing hide-and-seek. They, their dad, and Grampa strategized, with varying degrees of success, how to fly their kite, while we girls applauded their efforts and enjoyed the breeze. We adults watched as the boys and their 14-year-old sister rolled on the slope in the backyard, laughing and giggling. What pleasure! At night we sat around the fire as the moon rose in the vast expanse of sky. In the mornings we had coffee on the front porch and thought about the former residents. From the backyard we saw miles of rolling hills covered with crops and timber. We relaxed and enjoyed not only the Bunkhouse but each other. It’s a perfect place to know each other better. Thank you!

Family Canoe Trip

We go to La Farge every year to canoe the Kickapoo. in the past we camped at the park in La Farge. My father is getting older and camping is really not a choice any more. We looked for a place to rent in the area and found this property. First of all I had a easy time and a pleasant welcome from the home owner when I reserved the 3 nights that we stayed. That was not even close to the welcome that we received when we got there. They are the nicest and most helpful people. The house is a an old farm house that is charming and feels like coming home. The owners are so accommodating. there was fire wood for us to use, wine in the refrigerator, and a charcoal grill ready to use. We had 10 people staying there and were very comfortable. We are going return to La Farge next year at this time and have talked about how this house will be a new part of our long standing tradition. You will not find a better house and owner.

The charm of an authentic farm house surrounded by the natural beauty of the Kickapoo Valley.

This was the perfect setting for our annual sister trip and the Bar W Bunkhouse was better than advertised! There are six of us so the five bedrooms and two bathrooms worked out great. With the two oldest sisters being great cooks we enjoyed breakfast and nightly dinners at the dining room table. The kitchen was well stocked with the basics to prepare meals. Mr. & Mrs. Waddell could not have been more cordial. They gave us a tour of the house and answered all our questions as well as being easily accessible. Also they provided information about maintenance and great historical background. The house was very clean and the property very well kept. We especially enjoyed nightly talks and laughter around the fire pit. Looking out over the back yard was an idyllic scene of cattle grazing on undulating hills with ravines, also the autumn leaves were just turning after their peak brilliance. This is a wonderful place to take a walk and enjoy the beauty of this little piece of Wisconsin. Across the road is an old school house which brought back lots of memories and stories. What a joy it was not to have WiFi or television as a distraction! Creating our own entertainment was great. So what did we explore in the area? Viroqua has lots of wonderful antique shops and good restaurants but the majority of or day trips were to appreciate all the Amish farms and their food and crafts. Don't miss the cheese factory and their "squeaky cheese". We would certainly feel welcome to come again and will be recommending the Bar W Bunkhouse to friends and relatives. Sister #5

We really enjoyed the property. It was perfect for time away from the hustle of our busy lives. However, the location pinned for directions is not the property. It's the host's home about a block down.We booked over a month and a half in advance of our stay. I remember checking the box saying we were bringing pets. We communicated about my dogs before booking, after booking and over several messages and phone calls. Upon arrival, she met our dogs. At no time was anything said about there being an issue with our booking.We were awoken on our last day at 8am by the host. We did not answer as we were startled awake. She came back at 9 as we were getting up and requested 20 cash for our two dogs. I refused cash and informed her that should only come through the app. She told me she didn't know how. A lack of knowledge on how to use the technology does not make an emergency on my end.When I reported it to VRBO this they said I don’t need to do anything and they’d talk to the host. Just now she sent me an additional bill for the money.

Was a wonderful experience! The place was spacious enough for the family and the home was clean and welcoming. There is a beautiful view of the sunrise in the mornings! The hosts were great with communication, and went above and beyond expectations to make sure we were having a great stay. The kids really enjoyed watching the cows in the pastures from afar. People working around the farm were very friendly and always waved when we were outside. Over all I was very pleased with our stay and will definitely be looking to stay again during my future WI trips.

Great location made better by a great hostess!!

The property was very clean!! Older farmhouse but well maintained. Just be aware, it had two complete bathrooms but only one shower.Great for our needs; fly fishing every day!!Loved that we had the entire property to ourselves.The hostess was always in communication and she met us at the house.No corporate owners here!! We loved that she greeted us and told us about the property.We will definitely stay here again.
