Livingstone is an old gold mining area (the Maerewhenua Goldfields) rich in history, fossil sites, close to the world famous Elephant Rocks and a geologists delight.
We are Ivan and Kerrydawn, a couple of hard workers who have spent our lives doing 'the best we can.' (OK, not always successfully.) We came to the South Island in 1995 for a fresh start; because Ivan had never traveled south of Taupo, North Island; because Kerrydawn had lived and worked in the area in the 1970's and had fallen in love with the South; because we wanted our beautiful children to have a country upbringing away from the hustle, bustle, stress and angst that were starting to mark the North Island. We have moved from farming and truck driving to pest control and Rural maintenance, and wild horses couldn't drag us back; we are now dyed-in-the-wool South Islanders, and staying that way!
Kerrydawn purchased this House in 1999
Why Kerrydawn chose Livingstone
We bought this property originally for our late mother/mother-in-law because we had rented it when we first came to Livingstone in 1995 and fell in love with the area. Mother loved the peaceful mountain area and used it to advantage to inspire her natural painting talents which were honed at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam before and then again after the Second World War. Although sadly, many of her wonderful paintings were lost in a fire when she was 78 years old, it took four years before her heart would allow her to paint again and some of those paintings still adorn the Cottage.
What makes this House unique
Goldfields Cottage provides a place for relaxation and a break away from the mad rush of today's crazy world. It is set high on an old gold mining area at the foot of the Dansey Pass in North Otago, South Island of NZ. The view from the Cottage is phenomenal (well, we think so! and so do many others) and to wake each morning with birdsong and fresh mountain air is a stunning start to each day. At night when the skies are clear there is amazing star-gazing to be had (some guests have been known to carry their bedding outside to spend the night under those beautiful stars), and the days can be as full of adventure as you like to make them. Use our lovely rural space to kick back and relax or as a starting point for wonderful adventures in all four directions of the country's compass.
