About this property

Quintessential Bald Head Island cottage.

This beautiful Nantucket inspired cottage in Surfmans Walk is nestled in the maritime forest, just a short walk from East Beach, the most popular beach on BHI. It is also a short walk (and even shorter golf cart ride) to Shoals Club, The Commons Park, Bald Head Island Conservancy and miles of biking, hiking and walking trails.

The two screened porches and tree-canopied patio with fresh salt air and the sounds of soothing surf in the distance offer a perfect backdrop to read, drink a glass of wine, cook out, have your morning coffee and relax with family. The back screened porch has a beautiful swinging bed and directly accesses a boardwalk complete with ancient oaks, Spanish moss and a community gazebo. Outdoor deck is outfitted with a gas grill and comfortable seating. Al fresco dining is available in the screened-in porch and the deck.

This house provides extra privacy as each bedroom has it’s own bathroom and smart TV. There are two bedrooms in the main house. The master bedroom has a king bed. The other bedroom in the main house has 3 twin beds (2 twins and a trundle). There is also a detached tree-house style guest cottage over the garage, which provides extra privacy with a queen-sized bed, smart TV and ensuite full bathroom.

Cottage is well stocked with all the comforts of a relaxing beach vacation—WiFi, 2 golf carts (6-person and 4-person), heated outdoor shower, 6 beach chairs, 4 cruiser bikes, cooler, bed linens, bath towels, beach towels, beach umbrellas, sand toys, boogie boards, surf board, board games, books, portable high chair, pack n’ play crib, Keurig and regular coffee makers, blender, crock pot and fully stocked kitchen. Bike helmets are not provided. Bike pump is in the garage.

Weekly rentals are Saturday-Saturday in summer. We will entertain shorter stays outside of the high season. Message me to discuss.

Our house has the option to purchase a temporary membership at Shoals Club (pool/restaurant/beach access) for $100 per person per week during high summer season and $150 per person per week on holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day). Not all homes have access to clubs. Shoals Club is closest to the house (5 minute walk), oceanfront and offers pools, dining, fitness center and beach access. The club offers beautiful views and excellent food. Photos of the club are included in the pictures for our house.

**NOTE: If playing golf on vacation is important to you, then you need to rent a house that provides a golf membership to BHI Club. This house only offers a membership for Shoals Club. NO GOLF/TENNIS.

Another benefit of our house is having 2 golf carts—4-person and 6-person. 2 carts enable groups to separate for the many different activities the island has to offer.

Amazing restaurants, a spa, and a fully stocked market are minutes away from this quintessential Bald Head beach cottage.

In short, our goal is for you to have everything you need to enjoy the perfect vacation. We will take good care of you on your stay.

Please message me with any questions.

Fall memories at the beach
We had a wonderful week here! From the initial booking, Catherine the Host kept us on track for our Bald Head vacation by affirming that we had our ferry/tram tickets ordered to answering questions that popped up before our arrival. This place was perfect for us (myself, my husband our son, his wife and their 1 year old daughter). My husband and I stayed in the crofter and slept like babies. It’s completely separate from the house, but only a few steps away. The separation made it so nice because baby girl woke up earlier than we did, but any noise in the main house didn’t wake us up at all. Highly recommend the separate sleeping options that this place provides. It was truly a home away from home place to stay and had everything we needed and I can’t think of anything it didn’t have. Our son left his fishing rod in the garage by mistake, so I guess we’ll just need to schedule another trip back to retrieve it. As if we need an excuse 😜.

Forest haven
Catherine’s home was the perfect spot for a family vacation with 2 toddlers. Close enough to the most beautiful beach on the island to run back when we forgot something, or to take the bikes instead of a golf cart. Located in the thick jungle-like maritime forest, offering shade and peace in between beach trips. The back entrance of the house leads out onto a maze of boardwalk paths through the forest. Everything in the house worked as described, and Catherine generously arranged (and paid for) extra rental bikes for us when hers went missing. The house is well-equipped with games, beach toys, boogie boards, etc… We did not end up using the crofter, but fit 2 families of 3 comfortably in the main house. The turtle conservancy headquarters is around the corner- there is a sandwich and Italian ice window there. The shoals club down the street offers several dining options, 2 pools, and beach umbrella/chair service. Catherine was very responsive and helpful with the reservation and any issues that came up during our visit. Highly recommend - hope to be back in paradise soon!

Lovely cottage tucked away in the woods.
This cottage was perfect for us! Cozy and quiet, but near enough to the beaches and club that it didn't feel remote. Everything was as described. I especially loved the daybed swing on the porch!

Relaxing beach stay
Clean, has everything we needed, appreciated the 2 golf carts so we could be flexible, great location, the boardwalk yard wasn’t as good for our toddler, having a bit of yard would have been nice. Beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed using all the cooking supplies great location near the beach but close to the Turtle Conservancy and not far from the Market. We made use of the beach tours and the bikes. Catherine was VERY good at communication before and during our stay. Loved it!

Loved it.
Great house. Quiet. Comfortable. Lots of beach toys and bicycles. Carts were in good shape (an issue renting other places on BHI). Highly recommend it.

About the host

I live in North Carolina. I am a native North Carolinian. I am a mother of 2 beautiful daughters. I am married to a great guy who happens to be my best friend. I have been fortunate to travel a lot, but BHI is truly my family’s ‘happy place.’ Let me explain why...My mother was a consummate caregiver and she treated my family to many memorable vacations on BHI. She loved the island and loved sharing it with us. When we were with her, she thought of every detail to make us comfortable. Sadly, my mother, aka "Gaga," died unexpectedly this year. My father and I decided to honor her by purchasing this house and naming it after her—‘Gaga’s Gift.’ Our family feels closer to my mother on the island because we shared many good times with her there. She loved the bountiful natural beauty of the outdoors on BHI. She loved big family meals, walking on the beach, basking in the sun and reading on the porch. We will honor my mother by continuing the beautiful family traditions she started for us at Bald Head. We will honor her by sharing ‘Gaga’s gift’ with our VRBO guests and taking good care of them, just like Gaga would.

Things I love about BHI:
Dolphins (access 23 in early morning and dusk)
Eating by the pool at Shoals Club --Sandbar Grill
Drinks at The Palms patio or around the fire pit at BHI Club
Surfing at East Beach
Running
Walking
Biking
Sunsets (access 23, BHI Club, beach access behind the ferry)
Easter sunrise service at Village Chapel
Christmas Eve service at Village Chapel
Breakfast at Maritime Market Cafe
Yoga, massages and facials at the spa
Long walks on the unspoiled beaches with no crowds
Wine in a rocking chair at the gazebo at Shoals Club (my favorite view on the island)
Family time
Outdoor time
Safety—being able to let my kids roam freely on their bikes when they were younger (not many places you can do that!)
Italian ice at Mike's deli at the Conservancy
hikes in maritime forest

Why they chose this property

Our family has been visiting BHI for the past 10 years. We fell in love with the island in our first visit. Over the years, we have stayed in a variety of homes on different parts of the island, but we like the location of this property due to it’s proximity to East Beach and Shoals Club. I can walk to East Beach in two minutes! We also love that the house is nestled in the maritime forest. It has a tree house vibe, surrounded by the shade of twisted tree branches and palms, yet we can hear the ocean waves. The house provides lots of privacy because each bedroom has it’s own bathroom. There are also 2 porches and a deck to provide additional living areas for families and friends to spread out and relax. For even more privacy, there’s the detached bedroom over the garage (in BHI these are known as crofters). Since the crofter is detached from the house, it’s a favorite for guests who have different sleeping schedules or want even more privacy. My father goes to bed earlier than the rest of our family, so he loves sleeping in the crofter.

What makes this property unique

Option for club membership at Shoals Club (NO GOLF/TENNIS membership).

2 golf carts—6 person and 4 person.

PRIVACY: Every bedroom has it’s own smart tv and bathroom.

2 minute walk to East Beach.

Ocean--you can hear it from the porch!
