We'd stay here again
The apartment was just as we expected: small, comfortable, quiet, well equipped. Having the owner on site was reassuring in case anything went wrong (it didn't). Duncan was great and promptly responded to all communication. We would gladly stay here again.
Great stay in Boston
Duncan is an excellent host for his comfortable and convenient apartment in the Bay Village section of Boston. Lots of room, tons of books, and close to shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Tucked away in an historic neighborhood, the location is quiet and serene yet there is a buzz only a few blocks away.
Issues prevent me from awarding the 5 stars I would like to have been able to give.
Booking & subsequent communication with Duncan was easy & when we needed to move our stay forward by a day he changed the booking without question.
We were excited for our stay in the true Boston, not an impersonal hotel & were met by Duncan who told us he had given us a larger apartment which we were obviously pleased about. For this reason I am unable to comment fully on the accuracy of description as we didnt stay in the advertised apartment.
Then we discovered the problems....
1. There were ants coming from under the bedside table
2. The ceiling light in the kitchen didnt work & was left exposed
3. The extractor over the oven looked dirty, but maybe it was just rust but either way it was very tatty.
4. A cupboard in the bedroom was full of someone's possessions which did make us think that perhaps someone lived there but had vacated for a while!
5. There were open packets of food on the kitchen shelves
6. Finally the biggest issue was that in addition to food left in the fridge & freezer, they were actually dirty with food residue & also baking powder spilt everywhere.
I questioned in my mind whether the bedding was clean & couldn't sleep that first night. To be fair, I checked the crockery & cutlery, all set to wash those before use, but everything else seemed ok.. it was just the fridge & freezer!
I set to & gave it a thorough wash out, but couldn't remove all the shelves & drawer because the door wouldn't open wide enough.
Duncan was helpful & left us an ant trap to put down the very next day. He said that he was going to fix the light but didnt want to disturb us & that food was left by previous guests incase people wanted to use it. I completely get that, we have left food behind before when self catering rather than throw it away but only unopened things, not open packets because that just seems unhygenic I'm afraid.
Regarding the dirty fridge & freezer, Duncan said it was due to his reserve cleaner.
After the initial upset & bad night sleep, we had a lovely stay. The apartment is in a quiet street with easy access to everything, very close to Boston Common. Duncan kindly let us leave our luggage on the last morning meaning we could go for a walk & get food before leaving for the airport.
On our return home, I messaged Duncan to ask if he could consider a part refund of the cleaning fee we would have been charged considering I had cleaned up myself. This was almost a week ago & I have heard nothing which has left me disappointed.
Great location for walking Boston!
We really enjoyed our stay in this little apartment, located so near to Boston Common, Freedom Trail, Black History Trail and the sights and sounds of Boston! The kitchen was well equipped, the living room comfy for sitting, the bed and bathroom great.
We could have rented a cheaper condo, but we wanted to be able to walk everywhere we had planned, so we chose Duncan's apartment, and we never regretted it. The location is simply perfect. And Duncan is a great host, too.
