About this property

Sugarloaf / Redington East Private Residence

This Sugarloaf house is our personal residence. The house is 3000 sq ft consisting of three bedrooms, 3 baths, a large vaulted living room 18x26, library/ craft room with pull out queen bed, vaulted master bedroom, dining room, kitchen with wood cookstove and breakfast nook, entry/ski room with laundry, and a full basement with ski tuning area. Since this is our personal residence, the house has all of the appliances, supplies, and amenities of a quality home. Also because this is our residence, this listing will only be available during the Christmas holiday Dec 23-Jan 5, the week of MLK holiday and the two weeks of Feb vacation, Feb 19 to March 3. Minimum stay for MLK is 3 nights and all others 6 nights. For those who may wish additional days either preceding or following the holiday weeks that extra time can be accommodated. Also, for those interested in a summer vacation, our home would be available for the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August. Since theses weeks are "off season" we would discount our nightly rate by 50%.

Redington is the most desirable off mountain neighborhood in the Sugarloaf area. It is 3 miles from the mountain and is served by the Sugarloaf ski shuttle. Two of the Sugarloaf Cross Country Centre's main trails, (trails 8 and 31) are accessible from the community (passes still required) and are within easy walking distance from the house. Snowmobile trails criss-cross the perimeter and numerous summer hiking trails are useable for snowshoeing and backcountry cross country skiing (no pass needed). Views of the mountain and Bigelows are commonplace, usually through trees. One can watch the snow-cat lights all night from any of the bedrooms in the house as they groom the mountain, useful information to skiers who want to know what trails were groomed and when.

The kitchen cabinets are cherry wood, there is over 30' of granite countertop, the floor is tile, and appliances are quality stainless (Miele, Bosch, Jenn Air) that are all built into the cabinetry. Also, there is a Waterford wood cookstove which will become the focal point of your stay if you choose to run it. You can cook things like wood fired pizza on a stone (provided) for example. Your hosts think of themselves as gourmands so there will be almost every kind of small appliance and gadget imaginable along with an array of cookware and spices. Basic supplies will be left such as rice, pastas, sugars, baking supples, oils, oatmeal cereal, condiments, spices, locally roasted coffee, tea, milk and eggs.

As for floor layout, the kitchen is open to the dining room which is open to the living room yet furnishings clearly delineate the rooms. The flooring, other than kitchen baths and entry way which are all tiled, is oak hardwood cut from our own property. All rooms have oriental rugs and the upstairs is carpeted. The dining room table is mahogany and can easily seat 12 persons with its extensions. Since the rental dates offered are over various holidays, guests may want to do a holiday dinner. Your hosts will be pleased to accommodate reasonable requests such as additional chairs, linen, crystal etc.

The living room has a 32 foot tall exposed brick fireplace chimney, cathedral ceiling and a lot of glass. There is a workhorse Fischer stove on the oversized fireplace hearth which will heat most of the house and which can also be cooked upon. Between the Fisher and the cookstove the house can be heated during a power outage. An entertainment center with Sony equipment and ROKU is located in the living room together with a small library of classic films, mostly director's cuts and/or criterion releases. Cable is basic, wifi is high speed (100/10 Mbps). A second Sony XBR television is in one of the downstairs bedrooms along with its own ROKU and BLU ray player. Upstairs, there is a library and a craft area. An Apple display monitor and keyboard will be available and should be plug and play for current laptops. The house has a Netatmo weather station which will provide guests with localized immediate weather information, including wind speed and direction, which is very useful during ski season. Also guests will have access to the Nest wifi based thermostat and fire/CO2 alarm system.

The upstairs bathroom has a tiled spa shower. It is set up so that the wood cookstove adds additional radiant heat when it is continuously running, creating a sauna like effect. The downstairs bathroom has a standard shower (larger size), linen closet, vanity and toilet. The laundry has a Bosch washing machine, Bosch gas dryer and ample supplies. There is a built in ironing board and iron along with a 1/2 bath together with storage space for additional towels, cleaning and paper supplies. The entrance room has a ski rack that will take up to 18 pairs of skis and a boot bench for changing boots. Boot storage is under the ski rack and jacket rack.

There are 4 decks with the house. The deck off the living room has 2 sliders and there is a BBQ and small gas grill. The downstairs bedrooms each have a sliding glass door that leads to the largest deck and the upstairs bedroom also has a sliding glass door that leads out to a balcony deck. There is a small deck at the entrance to the house. Depending on snow conditions, the deck(s), other than the front entrance, may or may not be available or may be partially available. Priority will be given to the deck with the BBQ.

There is a ski tuning space in the basement which will be available for guest use. There is a tuning table, ski clamps, waxing iron, brushes, and basic files and guides. There is likely to be a couple of blocks of basic waxes that can be used, ch 10 and ch 6. Advanced files, equiment, and waxes will not be available.

The house has 4 heating systems, each of which can independently heat the house. There is an oil fired FHA, a wood fired FHA furnace, Rinnai propane heaters (4) and the Fischer/cookstove on the main floor. The wood fired FHA will not be available for guest use. The cookstove is guest preference but will be both fun and again, the focal point of the house for those who are adventurous and choose to use it.

Hosts have prepared a "users manual" which describes the house's main systems, a "where is" guide and some operational information for some appliances or things that might be helpful for guests.

Exceptional Hosts and House

The hosts of this property were exceptional. Ed was very communicative with any questions we had during the week, and both their generosity and attention to detail with regard to our needs during the stay really helped make this a fantastic ski trip for our family. The home was beautiful, exactly as described- clean and spacious for our family of five (my wife and I with three kids). Both the outdoor center and the Sugarloaf were were easy to get to and within a 10 min drive. I would highly recommend this home to anyone.

Best cabin experience

Very pleasant experience: the owners prepared everything for our stay from having the fire started in the fireplace to leaving us groceries in the fridge and a gift box with pancakes, maple sirup and fruit preserve. The home is clean with very good quality furniture and appliances and close to the slopes. The owner showed care to us again after a snowfall when he came during the New Year’s Eve night and plow the access road and yard. He also offered to give a ride to one of us that had to leave earlier to the closest train station. We definitively recommend this property, and we will look for the same place if we come back.

Ski race week at Sugarloaf

This is a beautiful cabin with an easy drive to Sugarloaf. Plenty of space for 2 families of 3! Ed was easy to reach with any questions. The wood stove easily kept the place warm. Kitchen is fully equipped, we ate all our dinners there. We would definitely stay again. Great skiing too!

The house was amazing. Very spacious and comfortable and with an incredibly well equipped kitchen.

This Redington House was a perfect place to gather with our family and get in some excellent skiing. Our hosts think of absolutely everything. Careful and detailed instructions were left about all aspects of the house, the kitchen and heating systems. The wood stove kept us cozy, the mudroom was spacious for all our gear, the furnishings were attractive and comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with all the basics you need to cook a meal. The hosts were very thoughtful and generous with a lovely gift package and offers to use whatever food we needed in the cupboards/fridge. And the views out the windows of woods and mountains were beautiful. We would definitely return to this property in the future. The only improvement we would suggest would be more lighting in the living room and kitchen. Thank you for a special week!

Amazing house with excellent hosts!!!

We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay during our week long ski trip. The house was very spacious for our party of 8 and at the same time very cozy. It's immaculately clean, warm and has everything you need to spend your time in comfort. We took full advantage of spacious kitchen, that was very well stocked, to cook every day. The best part of our trip was the attention and care that we received from our wonderful hosts. They made our stay simply amazing!!! We would definitely look to return again!

beautiful home, wonderful hosts, great location

We could not be more pleased with our stay at this property. The hosts were incredible in anticipating our needs. They were always accessible during our stay, answering any questions we had. Their home was warm, clean, welcoming, and more than well stocked. From a family of cooks, who love to spend time in the kitchen together, we were more than accommodated. We had a lot of snow during our visit, which the owner took care of and helped us to get on our way to the mountain. Extremely attentive to our needs. The home was perfect for our family of five. More than enough sleeping space, awesome TV/surround system for watching movies, and really cozy atmosphere. Would definitely repeat this vacation at this property!!

About the host

Hosted by Edward Dardis

Host profile image
My wife and I built this house starting in 2006. We did all the construction except for the concrete walls, the well hole and the granite counters. Almost all of the wood came from our tree farm and was milled locally. We completed the house in the fall of 2016.
We now live at the house half of the time.

Why they chose this property

We built this house because our son attended CVA. This house is his childhood home. The original intent was to sell it but ultimately we decided to make it into our retirement home. At this point it is our primary residence.

What makes this property unique

Redington is a unique and lovely neighbourhood. There is easy access to the mountain and to cross-country skiing both backcountry and skate skiing. Good restaurants are close by and community services are fabulous. The anti gravity centre where my son trained as a racer has world class olympic level training facilities. Guests have access to the facility. There are numerous other services and facilities that make the area a gem.
