Amazing Lake Medora Retreat
This property was spectacular. The home was beautifully handcrafted by the owner. The attention to detail was truly amazing. There is lovely wood detail throughout the entire home, modern kitchen with excellent amenities, 2 nice sized, comfortable bedrooms and 2 baths. The home was spotlessly clean. The house is seated on a rocky outcropping on the east end of Lake Medora and it is quiet and peaceful. The owner was kind and thorough and provided all information needed for a perfect stay. This is a delightful home for a relaxing getaway in the Keeweenaw Peninsula. The location is perfect for traveling to local attractions. We would highly recommend this rental if you are in need of a perfect vacation. You will not be disappointed, as this home will meet all your needs.

Like many people, I have a "bucket list". Besides travel with my family, I had dreamed of building my own lake cottage. Having fallen for Lake Medora many years earlier, it was serendipity when this site came on the market in 2008.

On May 2nd 2009 I arrived at the lake with a 29 foot U-Haul truck loaded to the rafters. The lake was still frozen over as the seven of us first converted the garage to my current work shop and bunk house. Once we began demolition of the old cottage I had to move out. So I spent six weeks living in the sauna while the workers who came up from Chicago bunked in the workshop.

During construction there was a two week period when the well was being pounded in. This made for a nice background cadence for us to work.

Why they chose this property

I had been shopping the lake for many years before this spot came along. Initially there was no power on the lake, so you had to have a noisy generator on when you wanted light, and needed a propane refrigerator. This was a big deterrent to a city boy like me. Also at that time the cottages built along Lake Medora Rd were on Leased land. This was another deterrent - not owning the land under your camp.

In the early 2000's the land company sold the lots to cottage owners and they started selling off lake front lots too.
I looked at many of these but they were so far down the road that I was afraid of being greeted by Black Bears in the morning or at night.

There were always costly issues you had to face if you were going to build on a greenfield site - clearing, power and septic were all costly first steps.

Finally in 2008 I was "in the right place" in life, when the old cottage came on the market. I had been shopping the lake for many years and when this spot came along I jumped on it.

I could see it had an outstanding perspective on the waters edge, and the price was affordable too.

The local contractors still claim that the demolition here was on their top ten list - for the most bat guano that came out of the rafters during demolition.

It is hard to describe how satisfying it was to spend six months along the edge of the water building the cottage. It was truly one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

What makes this property unique

The atmosphere inside the cottage is one where you are continuiously exposed to views of the water in three directions.

During the daytime the ceilings are "painted" with shimmering light reflecting off the lake. This adds a unique dimension to the cottage interior.

The clear area around the cottage, and the open exposure to the West brings fresh air and breezes that also keep the site relatively free of flies.
