This rental is described as a wilderness and nature based experience in a treehouse. IT IS DEFINED AS NON HABITABLE AS IT IS A TREEHOUSE. The Treepod is a generic name given to our Treehouse. Friends and volunteers who visited coined the name after staying here and so, in the end, the name stuck! Please bear in mind that officially is not a ‘habitable dwelling’ but rather a handmade glamping pod focused on a nature based experience.
Kinabalu is managed as a Private Conservation Park in whose main aim is to conserve, repair & regenerate the rainforest.
Come lend a hand if you have a green thumb! If you like plant a tree or two. We have many seedlings on hand. :)
A 4WD vehicle is required for driving the 3km mountain giant forest drive to reach the Kinabalu. This service is provided for you by arrangement within reasonable hours so that when you arrive at Kinabalu, all lifts arriving to & final departure from the pickup point come at no extra cost to you. This is included. A modest FEE WILL BE CHARGED for pickups from Byron Bay, or airport ($75).
The Treehouse is an absolute delight. When I'm not writing & I don't have visitors or volunteers it is made available for you so is only available when unoccupied by family, friends or volunteers.
Nestled in the trees it overlooks the virgin jungle at the end of a valley to gaze onwards looking to the vast ocean. It's a dream!
Please note you are in the middle of wild nature here so be prepared for lots of wild creatures. They are a part of the experience. Ie insects, mice, possums, wallabies and snakes etc. we do our best but we are in their turf and some folk are not used to them.
Cooking facilities are provided by two gas stovetops, microwave & toaster. Basic condiments provided i.e. Olive oil, butter, salt pepper. Tomato sauce sometimes more. :) There is also a Weber Barbeque available for your use.
We provide a generous breakfast choice that includes eggs, cereal, fresh ground coffee, an assortment of teas, and crackers, not to mention a selection of fresh fruit. You will not starve!
Bring all other meals & your favourite treats!
It also has the added luxury of Fast wireless internet, a terrific 5-channel audio system, and Foxtel Satelite TV.
THE PROPERTY
Surrounded by a Rainforest Sanctuary & Nature Reserve, you have absolute privacy and one of the most extraordinary locations of the area and in Australia. Listed as in the top twenty nature-based treehouse experiences, this is a (nature) lovers retreat. Anyone who loves pristine walks into old-growth forest or swimming in the sparkling secluded waterfalls this is it.
Please bear in mind that being off the grid, building this Treehouse ‘cabana’ has been a challenge due to its location and difficult access. As a result of much labour, you get one of the most extraordinary locations in Australia. It has been quite an achievement to build this over the last 20 years . . now focused on the garden - still plenty to do.
The area is loved for its lush green growth, abundant water with its many waterfalls, and picturesque scenery. Not to mention the area’s fabulous beaches. Please take note that we are in the middle of a mountain forest jungle. All care is taken but you accept full responsibility of your own health and safety. This is, in legal terms. A primitive campground. Enter at your own risk.
Inner Pocket Nature Sanctuary is filled with the most extraordinary array of birds, animals & insects. This is in the middle of virgin wild nature. For some, this could be frightening. So be prepared. Bring walking shoes, insect repellent, a torch & a raincoat and a torch. You never know!
Be aware, I repeat, that because it is an unconventional building it is to be assumed to be, in legal terms, a 'primitive camping site', a treehouse, or glamping cabin and be aware it has no rails & concrete pathways. It is jungle law here. You enter these premises AT YOUR OWN RISK.
All care taken, however, BY AGREEING TO COME TO STAY HERE YOU HEREBY TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL SAFETY. THIS IS WILD JUNGLE HERE SO BRING YOUR WALKING SHOES!
GUEST ACCESS You have full access to the whole property & the surrounding Inner Pocket Nature Reserve. Be aware that pets are NOT allowed in the Nature Reserve.

Being an elderly couple it appears not for everyone - its a nature based experience surrounded by wilderness - some are more suited to a resort style situation. Yes, the tracks do have 'rocks' on the track and it is steep country so requires a certain level of fitness to explore the wilderness.
Amazing little paradise hiden in the heart of the rain forest!
We had a wonderful stay at Robin's treepod house!!!
Robin was very kind and welcoming and made the whole process super smooth. He was very knowledgeable and educated us about the history of the area which was very interesting.
The cabin itself is very private and offeres breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding hilly area. Everything was very neat and tidy and provided. There is a fire place on the deck and my favorite spot was the outdoor warm shower! The place was very cosy, bed very comfy, the little kitchen was just perfect with everything you need. Bacon & eggs, fresh milk, fruits and juice was a beautiful little touch that made us feel like home. We will definitely come back. It was hard to leave such a beautiful place behind! The 4x4 access to the property makes the whole stay even more adventurous. 10/10

Nice stay but not worth the price we paid
The location of the property was beautiful. It was high up in the mountains with a beautiful view over the valleys. It was really nice to watch the landscape light up with the rising sun. It was a nice getaway and felt really tranquil. Laurina and Paul were both very helpful and communicated well with us. The kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed to make dinner. The cabin itself, however, does need some maintenance and improvement. The front door does not seal fully, there is a gap at the bottom of the door that is about 25cm long which lets insects in. The windows inside the property also have no fly screen which made us not want to open the windows. Also the water on the property was fed from rainwater tanks which is quite normal, but the water had an unpleasant smell to it which was quite off putting. The wifi router was also quite outdated and one issue we had was that the power button on the router needed to be depressed with toothpicks for the router to stay switched on. We didn’t know why the wifi wasn’t working and so had to ask the property manager to fix this issue for us. The TV also had issues connecting to the wifi and so we we couldn’t access Netflix or any other streaming services on the TV.

Unexpected technical issues are very rare. In fact it has never happened before. But it was fixed albeit unorthodoxly. We would never have flatscreens so that is something that urban dwellers would not appreciate- ie the presence of the wind and elements. Most of the time the insects are manageable with repellent etc but for the most part and for most people are not an issue. The gap in the door? Not sure about that one. All the best.
We recently had the pleasure of staying at this enchanting treehouse, and it truly felt like stepping into a fairytale. From the moment we arrived, the sunrises painted the sky with hues of gold and pink, casting a warm glow over the entire forest. The atmosphere was nothing short of mesmerizing—serene, mystical, and utterly captivating. The outdoor fireplace was my partners favourite feature looking across the mountain side.
Our host, Robin, was an absolute gem who shared his wealth of knowledge about the surrounding area. He's insights were invaluable, guiding us to the trails and breathtaking viewpoints. Robbin's passion for nature and adventure was contagious.
Communication with Robin was a breeze. He was prompt, friendly, and made organizing our mountain excursions effortless. Whether we were hiking up to catch panoramic vistas or descending to explore the lush valleys and waterfall, Robbin's guidance ensured we had unforgettable experiences.
Oh, that heavenly bed!, cocooned by an abundance of plush pillows. We drifted off to sleep each night, surrounded by the gentle rustling of leaves and nature. Blissful rest was guaranteed. The outdoor shower was hot and reminded me of posh camping like a waterfall.
And then there's our beloved furchild. His tail wagged with unbridled joy as they explored the treehouse and its surroundings. He loved curling up on the deck and watching the sunset with us.
We left with our souls rejuvenated, promising ourselves that we'd return
Stunning views and rainforest creek complete with crystals clear water surrounded by Elaeocarpus angustifolius, monitor lizards, tree snakes and plenty of king Alexander palms
Robin was a great and helpful host who’s communication and hands off approach allowed for the stay in the treetops to really feel isolated in the best way. The environment is perfect, coupled with a chance to go on some pretty fantastic walks.
Overall the experience at Robins treetop escape was just about perfect, with everything we needed and forgot provided to us.
Cheers Robin !
Such a great hideaway location, we really enjoyed our weekend away relaxing in the treetops, exploring the surrounds and being in nature, thank you for looking after us, such a beautiful place was just a dream!
It was the perfect Birthday getaway. From the drive up to the treehouse, the bush tracks, outdoor shower and amazing view. Wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely visit again.
This is a magical place to slow down. Relax and recharge. Awesome views - watching the sunrise from your bed! Robin and Jackie were attentive but also left us to enjoy our time. Loved being able to have fire at night and watch the shooting stars. Hot outdoor shower a bonus after day hiking. Thank u for sharing this part of the world with us.
Absolutely loved our stay here. The natural surrounds and beautiful cabin gave us an amazing escape for a few days. Got to have some cuddles with the resident animals too.
The accomodation is more like a camp in the woods with all necessary requirements provided. Excellent location to unwind and relax if you can handle a few creepy crawlies.
Since it’s located at the hill top with only off-road access host comes and picks you up from a parking lot. A jungle safari in itself the ride becomes a part of the experience.
Our host Robin was excellent and we had some very interesting conversations. He also suggested plenty of local trips and locations which we really enjoyed exploring.
The treepod is like no other stay - if you're looking for a complete connection to the natural world I highly recommend the stay. Robin was such a friendly & helpful host and we can't wait to be back - highly recommend :) Pure magic!
Stunning location; welcoming, helpful owner; cosy, rustic treehouse with all the basics you need - an idyllic spot to enjoy nature at its best
