Riverstone is situated on a semi rural lifestyle block on the banks of the Taramakau River, halfway between Greymouth and Hokitika with a stunning view of the river and historic rail bridge.
With over 100 years of history, the building has had many facelifts in its time. It was originally a country hotel called The Tramway Tavern, which accommodated travellers since the late 1800’s.
Our 5 bedrooms offer top of the line beds, quality cotton sheets, french flax linen duvets, feather and down duvet inners and luxurious pillows.
Your group will share a bathroom block with 3 separate and private, high pressure showers with unlimited hot water, a toilet off the bedroom wing, plus another 3 toilets off the lounge.
Please note that there are no en-suites.
We have a large chefs kitchen with a 5 burner gas oven, well suited for bigger groups with all the essentials you’ll need and more with plenty of bench and storage space.
What was once the restaurant is now a spacious open plan lounge and dining area which leads to a massive deck with a stunning view of the Taramakau River.
There is a BBQ on the deck with gas provided along with plenty of seating for outdoor dining.
The whole house is double glazed and fully insulated which not only keeps it warm in the cooler months, it also eliminates road noise.
The heat pumps in both the lounge and the bedroom hallway can be used for both heating and cooling, making the entire house cosy and warm in the cooler months or cool and comfortable in summer. All bedrooms will also have individual heaters available in the winter.
You would be the only guests staying on the property and you will have your own entrance, private lounge/dining area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, laundry and outdoor area.
We live in a completely separate area of the house and there are no shared spaces.
Nearby attractions to the north include; Lake Brunner, The Great Coast Road, which has been named one of the top 10 drives in the world by Lonely Planet, the world famous Motukiekie Beach, the Pancake Rocks and Punakaiki. To the south, Lake Mahinapua boat tours and kayak hire, the Hokitika Gorge, the Tree Top Walkway, Hokitika beach town, Lake Kaniere, Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier just to name a few.
Other details to note;
-We also live here under the same roof, but all areas are completely separate and private. There are no shared spaces.
-While my young children and I are very mindful to respect your privacy and keep the noise down, kids will be kids so you will no doubt hear us from time to time and see us outdoors on our side of the house. If you think this might be an issue, this property probably isn’t the right place for you to book.
- Provided are all the basic cooking essentials; vegetable oil, salt, pepper, vinegars, soy, herbs and spices, food wrap, baking paper, tin foil etc.
Also provided are some continental breakfast supplies that you can help yourself to including cereals, homemade bread, spreads, tea, instant and plunger coffee, milk, seasonal fruit and free range eggs from our chickens if they’re laying.
-You will be the only guests on site during your stay
-The single beds listed in bedrooms 2 and 3 are trundler beds and are only suitable for children and young teens. They are not permanently set up so please advise if you would like them made up when you make me aware of your group configuration.
- As the base rate is for 4 guests, some rooms may be locked depending on your total guest numbers and group configuration. This is to keep the house affordable for smaller groups.
For example if you have 2 couples and 1 single, 3 bedrooms would be set up for you, not the entire 5 bedrooms.
-There is a small step down from the bathroom block to the bedroom hallway, and a small step up to bedrooms 1 and 2.
-Please keep in mind that the house is not situated in a town. We are on a semi rural lifestyle block halfway between Greymouth and Hokitika in a very picturesque setting. If in doubt please find us using an online map.
-There are no en-suites. There is 1 large bathroom block with 3 separate and private showers off the bedroom hallway and 4 toilets throughout the house.
-As you can see on the map, we are near the main road but the house is double glazed and insulated, so road noise isn’t an issue.
- As the property isn’t fully fenced, young children will need to be supervised while outside.
- Occasionally trucks may cart gravel from oil the riverbed past our property, starting no earlier than 7.30am
- Like everywhere on the West Coast (though nowhere near as bad as Fiordland and South Westland) we are blessed with the dreaded sandfly.....little, black flying vampires which can leave a nasty itchy bite.
On the deck you’ll find complimentary insect repellent which we highly recommend applying anytime you go outside, especially at dawn and dusk.
