Lovely cottage
Loved the cottage overlooking the lake and autumn trees. It is a beautiful arboretum. Cottage is great; beds are very warm and comfortable, lovely views from the kitchen and lounge, very quiet and private. Need to take food. Well-equipped kitchen.

Stunning Stay
Such a gorgeous stay and communication with the managers was fantastic! We arrived very late due to our maps failing us, and we were able to stay an extra hour the next morning :)

One night stay
Overall nice place to stay. Happy with the ammenities it’s quite basic and outdated but suits the environment it’s in, being lakeside and rural. Only thing was it was very hard to get to with the surrounding roads being gravel and was hard to find in the dark as the grass path off the hill was overgrown. We got lost finding it and since there was no reception we couldn’t message the host or call them so had to ask the neighbours. Unsure if we would stay here again as was quite stressful to find and wasn’t the most affordable. But for an off the grid retreat it is amazing and would recommend it for anyone looking for peace and quietness.

About the host

Hackfalls Station was first named Abbotsford by its original owners, the Whyte family, who immigrated to New Zealand from Scotland and acquired the Tiniroto property in 1889.

In 1916, the Berry family bought ‘Abbotsford'. Bob Berry was born that same year and grew up to be a farmer, inheriting the property in about 1950. Bob developed a special interest in trees for both their botanical interest and beauty and concentrated on growing oak trees, particularly Mexican oaks.

The property's name was changed to Hackfalls in 1984 when Bob's niece Diane Playle and her husband Kevin bought into and ran the stock side of the station. The name Hackfalls was chosen as this was where the original Berry family lived in Yorkshire, England - Hackfalls Wood.

Bob was then free to concentrate on the arboretum and in 1990 he married Lady Anne Palmer, an English horticulturalist who established Rosemoor Garden in Devon. Anne's expertise proved invaluable at Hackfalls as she extended the existing homestead garden and introduced a variety of new plants.

In 1993, Hackfalls Arboretum was made a charitable trust and now has over 3000 rare trees and shrubs growing across 50 hectares.

What makes this property unique

Hackfalls Arboretum was founded by renowned tree expert Bob Berry and features 50 hectares of rare shrubs and trees around natural lakes.

Four hectares of original forest together with the 50ha arboretum have been protected by a Queen Elizabeth II Trust covenant since 1985.

The large collection of Mexican oaks has been reviewed recently by the current European expert on Mexican oaks and chief botanist of Hillier Gardens, England, Allen Coombes
