A farm surrounded by the primeval forest on the goddess island of Miyajima

The farm is located on the island of Miyajima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan and registered as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. It is surrounded by a virgin forest on the sunny southeastern slope behind the sacred mountain "Misen", where it is said that the legendary Buddhist monk Kukai, also known as Kobo Daisi, trained in the early Heian period. The farmhouse is a vibrant fusion of Mediterranean atmosphere and classical Japanese interiors, where you would feel lost in wonderland.

As the owner worked as a Japanese-French interpreter in the French-speaking countries in Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Benin, etc.) for a total of more than 20 years and is fluent in both English and French, he thinks visitors from abroad could fully enjoy their stay without feeling any linguistic barriers.

This is a great place to be on Miyajima Island. It is remote on the top of the mountain, on the other side of the island from the ferry terminal. So getting around the island is a bit of a challenge. However, Kenji is a great host, it's a magnificent place to get away with spectacular views. Bring some food with you, relax and enjoy the nature of this farm!

Staying at this farm was the perfect way to disconnect from busy city life and truly enjoy nature. Ken was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about how life is lived in this neighborhood and making the experience feel very authentic. The sunset here is absolutely amazing, and we really enjoyed the sundowner while taking in the beautiful views. Ken even shared some fresh vegetables grown on the farm, which made the stay feel even more special. Bathing here was also such a unique and relaxing experience. At night, it can feel a little scary if you’re not used to real nature and adventure, but that’s also part of the charm. I loved this “rancho” experience — but in Japan.

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Kenji-san provided such a cozy comfortable stay on his organic farm with a one of a kind view of the Setouchi Inland Sea or as he calls it “the Japanese Mediterranean”. Kenji kindly gave us tour upon arriving and showed us all the facilities including a traditional cedar tub and we shared very engaging conversation on the drive to and from the property. Thank you to much to Japan’s last hippie - until next time.

The location was pleasant with great views and easy downhill walk to the water where you would be able to swim in the summer months. It is a location where you are away from the multitude you can relax and take in the mountain air. Beds were comfy host was lovely and generous with his garden. You must take your own food and drinks for your stay. We stayed 3 nights which we felt was enough as we are on the go persons. Also I believe general fitness is a must. Overall it was great.

Kenji picked us up from the ferry and took us on the long and winding road to his place, which is beautifully secluded and has stunning views over the Seto inland sea. He was super friendly, making sure we were settled in and giving us a basket of organic vegetables from his garden before leaving. The house is lovely, blending traditional Japanese house design with modern elements. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals. We spent a lot of time on the deck and in the traditional Japanese bath. The property is surrounded by beautiful forests and is a short walk from the beach if you want a swim. We both love birdwatching and the birdlife in the area is amazing, with an abundance of Narcissus Flycatchers in the forests and Grey Nightjars which can be heard singing in the evening. Our only regret is that we didn’t stay for longer!!

It was a total experience to stay at Kenji‘s VRBO. In a beautifully rustic setting with gorgeous gardens and wildlife Lulling us to sleep along with a most amazing view of the water. I wish we had stayed another night but I would recommend highly for a truly magical stay!

Kenji was an incredible host and has a really beautiful property. He was very responsive and kind enough to drive us to and from the ferry terminal/ property (about 30-45mins by car). He leaves you totally alone at the property (other than potentially popping in to water his veggies) as he lives elsewhere. I would recommend this stay to anyone looking for a remote retreat. That being said, the property is VERY remote -- this is not for anyone looking to see the sights of Miyajima, or otherwise leave the property at all. You can walk around the farm, take an indoor/ outdoor bath at the bathhouse, or make the short walk down to the beach at the bottom of the hill (rocky but gorgeous, clear, swimmable and near private), but that is all you should plan for unless you want to make the 2hr trek to town or do some serious hiking ! Bring your own food for the stay (fridge and full kitchen provided). Our only real criticism was that not all of the windows in the bedroom had a lock, and the lock on the bedroom door was very flimsy and could be easily opened with a swipe of a credit card or butter knife - the island is very safe but as suspicious New Yorkers that made us very nervous! Would be an easy fix for some peace of mind.

What an amazing getaway! We really enjoyed our stay at the farmhouse. Kenji made sure to pick us up from the ferry and we visited his neighbor’s farm on the way. Incredible opportunity for a relaxed weekend! And the views from the house are simply stunning.

An incredibly relaxing stay

We loved our time on Kenji's farm, in particular just watching the boats in the bay at night time and listening to the wildlife, especially while having the most amazing bath. Kenji was a fantastic host and made check-in and out super easy for us. Do make sure you bring your own food for dinner and breakfast as we didn't realise just how remote the farm is!

Everything about our time at Kenji’s place was simply amazing. We stayed for two nights, and we spent our day there hiking around the island. We went all the way to the village by foot, and came back through the mountain via the Tsutsumigaura trail. Careful though, it wasn’t an easy hike! We had walked over 25km by the end of the day, but every step of it was absolutely worth it. We still cannot believe all of the beautiful landmarks we got to see that day. Otherwise, communication with Kenji was seamless. He is fluent in French and English. It was a pleasure getting to meet him and talk with him. The place is clean, well organized, and the view is majestic. I couldn’t recommend it more.

Island relaxation

It was great to spend some time in nature relaxing after doing city sightseeing. Kenju was very helpful collecting and delivering us to and from the ferry port. We had a lovely time enjoying the peace & quiet and waking up to a stunning vista of the sea and surrounding islands.

AHGV5B594321b* We had the most peaceful, beautiful stay at Kenji's farm on Miyajima Island! First of all, incredible location. I can't imagine many other people would have a way to get to that side of the island, it was so remote. Ken was very kind and drove us to and from his farm, even stopping partway both times to show us beautiful views of the island. He also helped us pick some veggies for dinner and then we were left to enjoy the farm on our own. The house itself was beautiful and has had a lot of love poured into it by Ken. I would recommend anyone visiting Miyajima to stay here!

Beautiful stay

My partner and I got to stay at this property for one night. Once we arrived, however, we wished we could stay another! This property is so magical, and the entire place is full of the host's personal artistic touches, like handmade tiles, and Ghibli-style lights around the bath-house.The one thing I would note is that the bathroom and toilet are separate from the main living quarters, so late-night toilet runs can be dark and cold! Bring someone to hold your hand.

Paradise on the magical miyajima

This was by far my favorite vrbo I have stayed in yet! Kenji was the best host, so helpful and kind. We spent our time star gazing, making dinners and soaking in the tub ❤️ the island its self is so mystical and full of rich history. We walked to the closest beach and swam in clear waters watching the fishing boats cruise by. Very peaceful. Couldnt recommended more!! Arigato kenji san!

Kenji-San has a lovely farm that is the perfect mountain side retreat for some quiet and solitude! The Japanese cedar bath is enough reason alone to book! The best bath I’ve ever had! Not only that but Kenji-San was very flexible and accommodating with my arrival and departure. He even offered me vegetables from his farm to go along with the food I had brought. They were so fresh and delicious! This is the perfect place to get away and refresh yourself in the elements. I wish I could’ve stayed longer!

A calm hidden oasis in the midst of nature

This was my second time staying at Kenji-san's farm in Miyajima island. The first time I stayed alone, this time with another adult and a 5-year old child. Kenji-san's farm and place is a beautiful little oasis at the calm, quiet mountain side in the mystical and lovely Miyajima island. The beautiful buildings filled with the loveliest details, the outside ofuro, the surrounding farm and the magnificent views to the Setouchi sea create the most loveliest stay. Kenji is the loveliest and kindest host and communication with him always works impeccably. I will definitely come and stay here again!

An escape from the crowd

Kenji has built a lovely house on the top of the hill with a beautiful view on the sea. It lies at 9 km of the city center with no connection by bus. Make sure to shop your food before getting to the island as there are 2 small convenience store on the island. To go to the city, Kenji will drive you (conditions to be defined) otherwise it is a nice 2-hour walk along the coast.

This was a perfect experience. It is so peaceful and beautiful on Kenji’s farm. The room was so warm and cozy, the property was very clean and well kept, and it was a PRIVILEGE to stay. Kenji was a great host, picking you up and dropping you off, answering questions and showing you the ropes of the house. You have to bring your own dinner because it’s a 45 minute drive up the mountains of miyajima but we cooked some ramen and fried up potatoes and onions from Kenjis farm! He has a small Japanese bath on site overlooking the farm which was delightful and perfect for an early morning hot bath. Remember - if you don’t have towels you will pay 300 yen to borrow very small but very absorbent towels. PLEASE come here!!! It was the highlight of our trip, truly an oasis and it gives you plenty of time to explore miyajima! Okay we’ll stop gushing now - just go!
