About this property

Eco-friendly cottage on a crystal-clear lake

Unwind in this cozy cottage, located in the scenic Northern Ontario whose landscapes had inspired the Group of Seven! Away from madding crowds, you will find everything needed for a comfortable stay. You can enjoy indoor relaxation and outdoor activities on the quiet lake accessed from a private lakeshore; explore the nearby hiking trails & provincial parks; visit neighbouring berry-picking and alpaca farms, or support local craftsmen, artists and antiques stores in the vicinity. We look forward to hosting you!

A small eat-in kitchen on the open-concept ground floor is fully equipped with anything needed to prepare and serve most meals. The large glass doors lead from the kitchen to an outdoor deck, furnished with a propane BBQ, a small patio table and chair set, all surrounded by lush trees. The kitchen is joined with a comfortable living room space that has floor-to-ceiling windows, a wood burning stove and a TV. On the second floor, there are two private bedrooms (one with a queen size bed; another with two twin size beds), and a semi-private space (with a twin-size bed). High quality (100% cotton) clean linens are provided, as well as oversized cotton towels for indoor use.

Water in the building is supplied from the lake and it is treated with UV. Although safe for consumption, to avoid any mishaps, we encourage drinking bottled water and provide a 15L jug for our guests.

For those who need to stay connected, or work while away with family or friends, there is an office desk in the semi-private loft. The cottage has good cell reception and internet service (Starlink).

There is a selection of books, DVDs, VHSs and board games for all ages, and a second TV in one of the bedrooms, for indoor fun.

An imposing cliff, rising ca. 300 feet from the rugged Canadian Shield on the East side of the lake, provides a nesting haven for falcons. Under the sunrays that reflect off the rocks, the cliff changes colours during the day and over the seasons, inspiring awe at its beauty. Awe has been identified as a feeling of witnessing something vast and marvellous that cannot be rationally comprehended; the feeling of awe has been associated with an overall sense of well-being, resulting from the calming of the nervous system.]

We make available for our guests a good, stable canoe, a tandem and a single recreational kayak, and two SUPs. There are also two metal boats that can be propelled by oars and fuelled by the power of your own muscles, for a quiet fishing venture. Guests can use any of the selection of paddles, oars and a few additional beach and lawn toys that are stored in the blue beach shed and in the sauna. The traditional wood-fired cedar sauna, with volcanic rocks on the stove, is located next to the woodshed, a short walk from the lake.

A visit in May and early June is ideal to welcome Spring. In the Summer, one can engage in a variety of water recreational activities, stroll on the hiking trails, and shop for fresh organic produce and locally made products from area farms, including a couple of nearby berry-picking or alpaca farms. There are countless lakes and waterfalls throughout the wider Algoma region to be discovered, including the Aubrey Falls Provincial Park with its hiking trails (50 minute drive from the cottage). In the Fall, breath-taking views of rolling hills, lakes and rivers amid the changing foliage make it worthwhile visiting this gorgeous region that had inspired the Group of Seven. Given the right conditions, you might be able to spot the Northern Lights! (https://www.northernontario.travel/algoma-country/auroras-in-algoma).

Please note that you are engaging at your own risk in any of the activities on the property. We ask that our guests acknowledge that they read the cottage etiquette and the guest manual and that they are accepting the rental agreement before proceeding with the reservation.

The closest store is Tunnel Lake Trading Post (10 minute walk from the cottage): it has emergency cooking supplies, and a superior stock of camping, fishing, and hunting supplies; a small LCBO, and a gas station. You may be able to arrange a boat rental with the trading post for fishing on the Tunnel Lake, mere minutes away from the cottage.

The nearby towns - Iron Bridge, Thessalon, Bruce Mines and Little Rapids - offer essential services and conveniences such as grocery stores, LCBOs, pharmacies and health services, cafes, or restaurants, and, for antiquing enthusiasts, several antiques stores that may hold a hidden treasure for you.

The cottage is located ca. 1 hour away from Sault Ste. Marie; 3 hours from Sudbury; six hours from Toronto, and seven from Ottawa. Well-worth the trip - saves you from the urge to get on the plane and globe-trot!

Please note that this place is not ideal for smokers or those travelling with pets, as we do not allow smoking or pets on the property.

Wonderful stay!
Our family was so delighted with this cottage, including the area and the hosts. We had an amazing time! The hosts are so kind, thoughtful, prompt, and generous. Easily the best hosts I have ever experienced anywhere I've stayed. The beach is clean and gorgeous; my little ones had a blast exploring the rocks and shoreline. There are lots of fun water toys too, we went paddling, kayaking and tried our luck with the SUP boards. It's a nice clear lake to explore. We did bigger shops in Thesseron and Bruce Mines but the trading post is so close (10 min walk) and is very convenient (grocery, LCBO, gifts). The cottage we stayed in was well-stocked, clean, and homey. It's such a relaxing place to stay with an incredible view. I recommend this so highly and we hope so much to return in the years to come!

Quiet getaway
It's the perfect cabin that's fully stocked with everything needed for cooking. We were happy to find ceiling fans in every bedroom and also the living room which helped keep us cool. We spent our days kayaking and attempting to catch fish!

Amazing cottage get away
Wished we had stayed longer, the lake view was beautiful and hard to say goodbye too. Included many Kitchen appliances, propane was filled up completely and nothing was out of order inside the house. Blankets we’re clean and had fuzzy warm ones just in case it got cold. Fire wood was placed on the side as well for us, which was very nice. An outpost was just a minute drive away so anytime some food was needed it was only a moment away. Beautiful hiking trails as well. 5/5 stars, definitely worth it!

About the host

I live in a big city and work in a time-consuming, people-centred, high-intensity job. I find solace in escaping to the cottage with my family when our busy schedules allow us to do so. During the Fall and Spring seasons, I enjoy waking up early on a brisk morning. Walking over the central circle of the property to fetch the wood, I can hear the waves break on the shore and the birds sing in the surrounding trees. I start the fire to welcome my family for breakfast in a warm cabin, with the views of the trees, the mountain, and the lake. In the summer, I love going for a morning swim or out in a kayak, soaking in the silence and the unique beauty of the area. Nights are pitch dark and quiet, the darkness allowing a spectacular sight of the stars and the moon. Staying at the cottage is an experience that restores body, mind and spirit.

Why they chose this property

This property and the surrounding area are populated with mixed forests of yellow birch, pine, cedar, and maple trees. Juniper and wild berry shrubs that cover the grounds yield fruit throughout the summer months. Seagulls perch on the docks along the lake, and, if you venture out to the lake in the early morning, you might spot a blue heron resting on a rock, or an occasional fish jumping out of the water. At sunset, the calls of the loons extend over the lake. You might see chipmunks, rabbits, muskrats, foxes, beavers, and if you venture even further into the wild you may encounter deer, bears and moose. Modern technology rarely interferes with silence, the singing of birds, and pitch-dark nights ideal for stargazing. During the week, hardly anyone is on the lake, as other cottagers often visit only on weekends; even then, there is little human presence disturbing its peace. The remoteness, peace and solitude of this location give a sense of an escape from the hustle and bustle of a big city. The spectacular view of the mountain sloping gently over the lake, and the dance of colours with the changing sunlight create a sense of awe - which scientists have discovered to contribute to our overall sense of wellbeing.

What makes this property unique

This extraordinary home, at once unassuming and striking, was built by a beloved local architect and builder who applied his unique art and craftsmanship to timber-frame construction in the Algoma region.
Timber frame homes are structures built using a method of construction that dates back to ancient Egyptian and Roman times. They are built from large wood posts and beams that form the structural support of the home and require no interior load-bearing walls. The timbers are joined by connecting a mortise (hole) on the end of one timber with a corresponding tenon (tongue) that fits precisely and tightly. In true timber framing, the joints are secured with wooden pegs — no metal fasteners are used at all (more about this building technique: https://www.nahb.org/other/consumer-resources/types-of-home-construction/timber-frame-homes).
A wood burning stove, many windows and smart organization of the guest cabin create a feeling of coziness - 'cozy' being a concept of living originating in northern European cultures (Denmark, Norway, Scotland?) and that means something like "snug, comfortable, warm."
Hence, a stay in this home is an opportunity to experience an eco-friendly architecture constructed according to one of the oldest home-building techniques. The uniqueness of the architecture is matched by the natural beauty surrounding it. And, we (the owners) are generous hosts, for we provide for our guests all the comfort and consideration we would want for ourselves.
