About this property

Charming historical building in the heart of Rutherglen!

The Rutherglen Convent offers unique group accommodation in a thoughtfully-restored building that was once a boarding house, school and convent. Gracious, steeped in history and built circa 1927, the property is located in the heart of the Rutherglen wine-making district. Positioned within 550m of the main street you will be spoilt for choice with cafes, bakeries, wine bars and 3 pubs all within walking distance.

With its Gothic inspired architecture and old world charm, the building is spread over two expansive levels with the ground floor featuring a formal entry, kitchen, laundry and rooms with soaring ornate ceilings, fireplaces (disused) and leadlight windows. The upper level is accessed via two timber staircases and offers 10 bedrooms, boarding room style bathroom with 22 basins, 4 bathrooms (5 toilets in total) and access to the elevated balconies offering 360 degree views of the surrounds. The ground floor features an outdoor grassed area with rock seating surrounding a fire-pit, perfect for those cooler nights. Whilst the house can accommodate up to 20 guests, parties and events are not permitted.

Please note there is a 3 night minimum stay on public holiday weekends.

Hi!
I'm Gina and me and my family love this beautiful township of Rutherglen. We have spent the last 2 years restoring the Rutherglen Convent with another family and we can't wait to share it with you.

Why they chose this property

The Rutherglen Convent is a very special space for our family. We've been holidaying in the area for over 20 years and always wondered why this once-grand building was left generally unoccupied and abandoned for over 30 years. When the opportunity came up to purchase the property, we jumped at the chance to restore this old girl to her former glory and bring new life to this significant piece of local history and icon of the town.

What makes this property unique

The building is a perfect place to get together with friends and family, comfortably sleeping 20 guests with plenty of room to relax and play. The views of the Chambers Winery vines from the first-floor balcony will take your breath away, especially at sunset!
