They advertise the term private very loosely. It is a make shift basement living space with zero sound barrier between the host and his family upstairs and the "private suite" downstairs. We could hear everything they said. On our third night the host messaged us to turn the TV level down. It was 9:30.Outside our windows we could often see the host and his young children. We expected privacy as advertised, and did not get it.It was clean except the standup shower was scummy.

This review is extremely misleading and unfair. Our listing clearly states that this is a private basement suite within a family home. Private means guests have their own accommodation and entrance; it does not mean the house is unoccupied, soundproof, or that the family living upstairs will disappear. You booked a basement suite in someone’s home, not an entire detached property. We are the homeowners, and we have every right to live in and enjoy our own home, including using our front yard and walking around our property. Guests are expected to respect that. If you expected us and our children to vanish, fly over the roof, or somehow disappear just so you could feel that the entire property belonged to you, then you simply booked the wrong accommodation. Please consider whether your expectations and mindset are suitable for the type of property you choose to book. At 9:30 p.m., we politely asked you to lower the TV volume because it was carrying upstairs and woke up our kids; indicating how loud it was!!!! This was a reasonable request in a shared family home! For context, we have earned Superhost status on other platform consistently received excellent reviews from our guests. This experience does not reflect the standard of hospitality we provide. We welcome respectful guests who understand what they are booking and recognize that they are guests in our property, not the owners of the entire home. Based on this experience, you are not welcomed to stay here again.
