Nach Erreichen der Stammhöhe wird die Krone regelmäßig geschnitten und Seitentriebe am Stamm entfernt. Früher war diese Zaunkonstruktion wohl häufiger anzutreffen, vor allem im Gebirge (bspw. im Tessin). Der lebende Gitterzaun hielt frei weidende Ziegen von Gärten und kleinen Ackerflächen fern. Mit Auswahl geeigneter Gehölze konnte der Kronenschnitt als Viehfutter dienen.
