About this property

Comfortable House on a Private Pond in Stratton close to the Stratton Ski Area.

This three bedroom House is available for short rental for the Spring, Summer and Fall. It is currently not available in the Winter as it is taken.
Location:
The house is located in the town of Stratton on a quiet dead-end road off the Pikes Falls Road just one and a half miles from the Stratton Resort's base lodge. It is on property with a three-quarter-acre private pond and the Cole Cabin; it shares an L-shaped driveway with the Cole Cabin (also listed on VRBO).

The Cole House is half of a rambling two-family dwelling. The other half has its own entrance and driveway and is used by the owners when they are around. It is not available for rental. During the warmer months, when the owners are around, they stay up the road in another house.

Layout:
Downstairs, there is one bedroom with a queen bed and a split bath. There is a toilet and a sink in one room and a new clawfoot tub with a shower and sink in another room. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, one with two double beds and the other with one double bed. There is also a bath with a shower upstairs and a walk-in closet.

The rustic living room has a brick fireplace with an Empire propane insert and hand-hewn beams and looks out on the pond and Stratton Mountain. There is also a modern kitchen, and a laundry room with a washer and dryer. Other amenities include, a dishwasher, microwave, DVD Player, cable TV, and wireless high speed Internet. The house is heated with propane, the fuel of choice in Vermont. There is also a medium sized propane grill for outdoor cooking in the warmer months.

Note for Summer Guests: The Cole House does not have air conditioning, but is rather like an old fashioned summer place (though it is a year-round insulated house), and has fans. The evenings in Vermont tend to drop down into the fifties or low 60s during the summer.

Pond:
The country pond is three quarters of an acre in size, has a gravel base and is nine feet deep in the middle. In the summer, it is a great place to cool off or just enjoy the day.

Things to do:
There are many things to do in the area, from hiking along the Long Trail to visiting Pikes Falls, to biking and walking along the many small roads in the area. Town fairs and other local events are normally scheduled throughout the summer.

For those who want to go horse back riding or take in a round of golf in the warmer months or go skiing in the winter, the Stratton Resort is only 1.5 miles away (you are only seven minutes from the base lodge). The Stratton resort also holds concerts and various events and festivals.

Directions to the Stratton Resort: go down to the bottom of the lane, take a right, 500 feet later, take another right up Brazier's Way, the back end of the Stratton ski area access road, and five minutes later you are at the ski area. You can easily come home for lunch or run your kids up to the ski area in the morning and then come back home to do other activities such as snow shoeing or cross country skiing on the surrounding land or just sit back inside and enjoy the Winter solitude away from the resort.

Dogs (with limits) & children are welcome.

Cozy & Quiet Getaway
This home was perfect for a relaxing and refreshing summer getaway- the place is kept in excellent shape despite its age, and despite being the beginning of August never got overbearingly hot, air circulated well throughout the house. There are enough places reasonably close by to have things to do, and the flooding VT just experienced was not an issue here. My girlfriend loved the bathtub, and my dog loved the pond out back. Jeremy was very friendly whenever we saw him as well, and always responsive. Very happy we stayed here.

Stratton Mtn retreat
Everything about the property was just what we were looking for, quiet and restful. Jeremy was a great host and he came and said hi when we arrived and was there when we left. Wish we had stayed another week. The cabin is rustic but has all the comforts of home. Only minus to the experience was for the price of the stay and availability of trash drop offs ended up taking it with us when we left.

Near the Nearing's sugarbush
One of the attractions for us was the historic relation of the house and neighborhood to Helen and Scott Nearing's 30's homestead that was the subject of The Maple Sugar Book

About the host

Hosted by Jeremy Cole

Host profile image
I grew up in the Cole Cabin and the Cole House. The Stratton ski area was started by my mother, Malvine Cole, who was often called the Mother of Stratton Mountain, and a number of other people both local and from outside the state. I learned to ski on the hillside near the houses and at Stratton.

Why they chose this property

The Cole House with its own private pond and a brook on the backside of the property offers an old style of vacation that is quiet, private and away from it all in the backwoods of Vermont.

During the warmer months, the house offers a relaxing, quiet comfortable vacation spot with a private swimmable pond with a brook on the back side of the property. It is a bike ride or a short drive down to Pikes Falls. Hiking Trails are close by.

A Propane grill is provided for barbecuing along with a large round outdoor table and benches for enjoying outdoor meals. Other outdoor chairs are also provided.

During the winter, the house offers easy access to the Stratton Ski Area; it takes about seven minutes to drive to the base lodge. Its closeness means that renters can come home from the skiing for lunch or run their kids up to the mountain and then return to spend a quiet day at the house or go cross country skiing or snow shoeing in the fields and woods nearby.

What makes this property unique

- Private pond
- Quiet dead-end dirt road with few cars
- Old fashioned Vermont house made by Vermont craftsmen with a number of unique touches.
- Close to Stratton Mountain
- Close to Pikes Falls
