About this property
Cool vibes w/ 150' private beach, big views, trees, like northern Cali retreat
Everyone loves it here! Entering an oasis of calm w/ attention to casual comfort, this Lake Huron beach house has big windows and big views. It offers a blend of cottage life and art, a quiet retreat from the world - relax, read, listen to the waves, walk the beach, explore local activities w/ fishing and kayaking on AuSable River. A natural experience ... no TV but great wifi, and a comfortable place for R&R with seasonal fun in the water.
This private 150' Lake Huron frontage is ten minutes from the International AuSable River Canoe Marathon in July; half hour from Lumberman's Monument; and a few hours from famous Mackinaw Island. The surrounding area has beautiful and reliable fishing spots, stellar golf courses and hiking trails.
Our rental house has a mid-century California vibe. The main bedroom has amazing views of sunrise and moonrise over Lake Huron, with an en suite bathroom, office/dressing room. Large living room has floor to ceiling windows w/ sliding door that opens onto beach patio. Second bedroom has twin beds and an adjacent second bathroom. Cottage style kitchen and dining area has original Saarinen Tulip Table and chairs. The kitchen is stocked with spices/basic supplies. Adjacent is a utility room with w/d and exits to the garage where you find flotation vests and kites. The kayaks and paddle boards are kept on the beach. Weber charcoal grill, fire pit, and sculpture garden are near the house.
Artist owner lives on adjacent property with her ceramics studio; her sculptures are displayed on the property and can also be seen at Dow Gardens in Midland starting May 26th, 2025
We're on the US 23 Heritage Trail that travels along Lake Huron's coastline. There are numerous art fairs, antique stores and quilt shows up and down this Sunrise Side of Michigan. Drive up to Alpena and take a glass-bottom boat tour of the Thunder Bay shipwrecks, see the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, or visit the Besser Museum Planetarium.
This area of Northeast Michigan offers music events, writers conferences and artist retreats. The Northeast Academy of Dance offers ballet, jazz and modern dance classes to local and international students with superb performances each year. The Nordic Sports store in Tawas has outdoor gear and keeps the Corsair Ski trails groomed. They offer hiking information for the Huron National Forest, and a schedule of local Bluegrass concert series.
Please be aware that this 1700 sq. ft. house is not child-proofed. It has breakable art inside and in the garden, and is not appropriate for children under the age of 5. There are some vintage art pieces that can be put away if needed to accommodate the 5-10 year olds, yet the mid-century coffee tables and fireplaces are not child friendly. We don't want to dissuade you from considering this property if you have older children - however, let's dialogue about your needs, the safety of your family, and care of the property. Keeping lines of communication open are so important! Thank you!
Our property has a strict No Pets policy due to many guests being allergic to animals. Unfortunately we don't accommodate any exceptions, even knowing that your pet doesn't shed and is well groomed and obedient. Thank you for understanding.

About the host
Hosted by Helen Hierta

We feel so grateful to live in this area of northern Michigan, to enjoy year 'round amazing weather and views of Lake Huron. This is truly an inspiring retreat from the world! As a ceramic artist, I'm fortunate to have my art studio next to one of the world's five largest inland seas. If you are interested in clay, sculpting, wheel work or hand building, just let me know. I teach privates, workshops, and sometimes host birthday parties. Many of my sculptures are on the property, and have been exhibited in national galleries.
I love to see families enjoying the beach and toys. This is a safe haven from the world, a place to relax and renew. Please see many more photos of this property @noblehuron on Instagram, or my art @helenhiertaceramics

Why they chose this property
WHAT SETS THIS PROPERTY APART FROM OTHERS? We have 150' of private beach! The rental house is large and comfortable with big windows and expansive views. Across the way is a lovely flower garden, sculptures everywhere, and wherever you find yourself on the property there are beautiful views of Lake Huron.
A guest in 2019 wasn't able to submit his review to VRBO before the 14 days review allowance ended, yet he wanted you to know this: "My family and several good friends enjoyed our week-long stay at Helen’s property on Lake Huron last summer. The understated mid-century décor and quiet surroundings put us at our ease and fostered a very relaxing and peaceful visit. It was a great antidote to our normally hectic lives. We enjoyed reading, playing games, cooking, napping, kayaking, taking pictures, swimming, an open outdoor fireplace, guitar playing, exploring nearby State Parks for day hikes, canoeing on the Au Sable River, etc. The lake was very high last summer, and the dock was partly awash, but didn’t diminish our enjoyment of the sandy beach and shoreline. Helen was attentive but unobtrusive, a great host."
A BIT OF HISTORY: the property has been in my family for 50 years. It was originally run as a vacation resort called "Cherokee Trails" by my stepdad, a Detroit auto designer, who purchased three beach lots as an adult. Over the years two of the lots were sold, and some of the original guest cottages were combined into single structures. When the opportunity arose to repurchase one of the lots, we did so. There are now two adjacent properties that total two acres with 150' of private beach. I live on one property that also has my ceramic art studio. The other property, separated by numerous trees and a large flower/sculpture garden, showcases the 1700 sq. ft beach rental house.

What makes this property unique
The sky is always changing, the water reflects the moods of the seasons, and the shoreline goes from dramatic to calm within hours. It's never boring here. There is a large sandy beach as well as a natural ecosystem. One summer we had a kildeer nest. Deer, fox, pileated woodpeckers, heron, owls, eagles, terns ... it is naturally perfect here. Quiet, private and laid back.
