About this property

Thatched Cottage – Ideal for Romantic Breaks, Couples & Small Families.

Anstey Mills Thatched Cottage is a Grade II listed traditional stone, cob and thatch barn, boasting ancient beams and exposed stonework. ‘Visit England’ rewarded it the 4 Star Gold in the last year, an accolade the well presented holiday home achieved every year since 2010! This lovely traditional cottage has a small, well-equipped kitchen, a spacious and cosy sitting room with sofa bed and dining area, and a large bathroom with a whirlpool bath for two.

This beautiful place boasts luxury and comfort: On the first floor, we have the open plan bedroom with king size bed, two futon chairs (doubling as single beds) a small toilet with wash basin and a separate shower. The heating is included in your rental: night storage heaters, warm towel rails and in kitchen and bathroom you have heated floor tiles. New for 2018: Electric blanket (two separate zones) in the kingsize bed, if the feather and down duvet and pillows don’t tempt you!

Being our small cottage, it is never the less generously spaced for two, and even plus one or two children (two single futons upstairs or sofa bed downstairs ). The galleried bedroom is enhancing this feeling of openness and to add to this we have created outside sitting areas in front of the house as well as a decking at the back (access from the bedroom) a sun trap and a wonderful place to enjoy al fresco dinners, overlooking your private garden and adjacent fields.

And if you feel like crashing out, the jacuzzi bath (2-seated - in bathroom - NOT hot tub), heated tiles or oak floors will just add to that ambience of comfort and luxury that we would like to spoil you with.

Spacious one bedroom cottage sleeping 2 plus 2 small children (cots available)
Luxury bathroom with Jacuzzi bath (double seated) and washing machine
Linen included (bed linen on lovely feather duvets and pillows, towels, tea cloth, …)
Dog-friendly cottage with separate enclosed 'exercise' area
Well equipped kitchen including a dishwasher (Tumble-dryer in Barn)
Electricity and central heating (night storage heaters, warm towel rails,u/floor heating in kitchen and bathroom, electric blanket etc.) included
Private patio (decking) overlooking your private garden and adjacent fields
Ample parking outside your cottage
Wifi internet access cabled in (with differing signal strength due to our thick walls)
Smart TV with Freeview (Fair usage required due to low bandwidth)
German and French are spoken. Wir sprechen Deutsch. On parle Français un peu.

Idyllic rural break
We had a lovely, restful break in this sweet cottage in its idyllic rural setting. Snuggled between rolling fields (some populated with sheep and cows, others (after a careful check!) mercifully empty meaning the dogs could have a safe romp), the setting is picture book pretty. There is a little enclosed decked patio directly accessible from the top floor of the cottage (but no pets upstairs) otherwise no fenced off area of garden so, if you have dogs or small children, just be aware. For us that was more than offset by being able to stroll the immediately adjacent fields but it might be a consideration for some. The huge open plan top room (with shower and loo) was perfect for my 3 teens and I opted for the sofa bed downstairs with my two greyhounds! (There was also a huge bathroom down stairs). We were blessed with beautiful weather but I imagine it’s pretty cosy and romantic even if it’s rotten outside. Decent internet, big tv with Netflix and Amazon Prime etc, lots of books and kind owner and neighbour immediately adjacent for chats and advice on the area if needed. 15 mins drive from picturesque local market town, Dulverton, with a beautiful river, fish and chip shop, local Coop, and nice pubs - pretty much all you need.... All in all it gave us a really lovely, much needed, totally restorative stay away from London. Thank you very much to Doris for having us (and being so patient and understanding with my madly chaotic booking process)...

Hello, I’m Doris. I am a German national but have lived on Exmoor since 1989. I absolutely love living here and running Anstey Mills Cottages is my way of sharing that love for this incredibly beautiful and tranquil spot! Despite being such a remote location, the secret is sort of out... I have regular visits from family, friends and returning visitors all of whom, I’m sure would agree, that this place really is quite special.

The community in and around our parish East Anstey is wonderful. There are regular coffee mornings and exercise classes plus the odd concert, theatre or cinema event in the village hall. I mostly walk our spoilt little Cocker Spaniel Ebony through the fields so, basically, I have very little time for work.

Picture me with a glass of G&T at the local Pop-up-Bar, taking my visitors on a walk around our farmland or offering them a cream tea on arrival, hiking along the coastal path before enjoying a roast in one of many exceptional pubs, shopping at the Pannier Market in South Molton and then having a snack at the ‘Corn Dolly’ etc etc. Life here moves at a decent pace but there is always time for a cup of tea!

Why they chose this property

When I first arrived at East Liscombe the narrow lane and old cob and stone buildings were an impressive experience. Parts of East Liscombe are going back to the middle ages: old beams, some fancy ceiling work and the thick walls of the Devon Longhouse could tell many stories. However, we do not know the history of the farm. At some stage it must have been a wealthy property, as the large two story barn adjacent to the walled yard is enormous and houses an old threshing machine that is built in on the upper floor. The round house at the back explains how this was driven in the old days. From this the age of the barn can be determined as around 1900. One day I hope I find out more.

What makes this property unique

Just waking up in the morning - and many who stay here rave how well they can sleep - to birdsong is a treat. You can see the fields from your bedroom and the sight of pheasants, buzzards, foxes and even sometimes deer are a distinct possibility. The tenants have mainly sheep and as we are on the bridleway it is not uncommon for riders to come through. But apart from that and the odd rambler, we are undisturbed by the world around us and can enjoy the peace and tranquillity.
Whether you sit in the back garden or make use of the terrace/decking, you can immerse yourselves in nature. And as the path goes right from your door up to the moor - one leading up to the Two-Moors-Way - you (and your dog) can put in some miles of decent walking and then come home to a Jacuzzi bath (NOT hot-tub) or dine al-fresco on the decking and admire the stars...! Relaxation pure!
