8 of us stayed at the house and had a wonderful time in Roatan. Kitchen was well supplied with all cooking needs and the BBQ grill was great. Beach, due to recent storms, was not quite what we expected but by the last few days of our trip we entered the ocean just west of the house for beautiful snorkeling. We would definitely return to the location and house. Nice eating places close by and plenty to do or not if you prefer quite solitude.

Great value and convenient location close to our new favorite dive shop, Octopus Dive School💳

The house is nice and spacious especially for 4-6 people but it can comfortably sleep 8 in beds (1 bed not enclosed in its own room). Though the water view is great, our only disappointment was the beach in front of the house. With Roatan having record rainfall before our trip, the beach wasn't usable for what we wanted (lounging, exercise, beach games, etc), and we were fairly warned by the owners of this. Granted, we were scuba diving every day, so it didn't matter! Snorkeling in front of the house is great once you get through the sea grass to the reef! Johanna and the rest of the owners were also great in helping us plan our trip.

Hi Sara, Glad you enjoyed the house. We try our best to make the visit the best possible. Sorry about the beach. As we mentioned, last year's rainy season was unprecedented. As soon as it was cleaned, more rain fell. Everything is pristine and beautiful now. Hope you consider us again when thinking of an island adventure. We would love to welcome you back. Wishing you and your family a wonderful year. Regards, Gloria & the Sandy Bottom team

Recommend to update pictures.

Online pictures are old and don't give an accurate view of the property, as there have been construction which changes the view. I appreciate the safe the owners installed upon my request and the Ring security system. The home was acceptable for my wife's family, as they were visiting us from mainland Honduras. The house was an upgrade from where they live. The home was roomy and the 2 1/2 baths was nice. Bottled water was provided and was appreciated.

All but one the pictures are up to date. We changed one of the beach pictures to be more accurate of the current view. Views of the beach and water were/are unobstructed regardless. The house has been repainted which we show in the new pictures. We have not been there for a year and they paved the road in front of the house, planted some small palms on the beach. The renter's guide which we sent has additional pictures including the security wall. There is a nursery school built by the municipal to the left of the house but that does not obstruct our views or direct access to the beach. We have pictures of the house view and security wall posted as well. If you want more pictures, visit our website or ask us. We have 4 full baths. Every bath has a shower, 3 are ensuite. We have no idea why he said 2 1/2 baths. We and our island manager were constantly in touch, accommodating their every desire. They did take some of our Honduran rare wood furniture outdoors which we asked them to take back inside. We are not sure what other concerns they had.

Sandy Bay

Our stay at Gloria and Tom's beach house in Roatan was a wonderful experience! The house itself was very nicely decorated, providing all the comforts of home and the added charm of island life. The location was great, just down the road from Anthony's Dive Shop and a short drive to Half Moon Bay. The kitchen was well-equipped, making it easy to prepare meals, but we also enjoyed trying local restaurants nearby. Gloria and Tom were incredibly welcoming and provided excellent recommendations for activities and dining. Whether we were scuba diving or lounging on one of the patios, every moment was amazing. We did have a few issues while we were there, that were no fault to Gloria or Tom, but were quickly addressed with the help of Hugo. I will say, keep in mind that electricity is fairly expensive on the island, so do you best to conserve it when you can. Overall, the stay was great, the hosts were amazing, and we would stay there again.

30 Days in Paradise

We had a wonderful time at this house. Tom and Gloria are great hosts. They were very helpful and knowledgeable of the island. We wanted to see Copan while here and Gloria went the extra mile to help us find a guide. The house is very nice its location on the island is about half way from West Bay anf Coxen Hole, which makes going anywhere easy. The local grocery store is just over the hill with fresh fruit markets before and after it. The snorkeling in front of the house is fantastic. There are 2 kayaks and life jackets to paddel out to the reef and a corral island to beach them while exploring the reef. You will see divers out there daily as it is a very favorable dive location. The only bad part was having to leave the month went very fast. Thank you for all you help Gloria.

Falsely Advertised

There were multiple issues from the beginning. I will share later. The biggest thing is that the property is grossly misrepresented. It is NOT beachfront, although it is advertised as beachfront and looks like it in the picture. The beach out front is actually a mud-flat, not a sandy beach. If you walked one direction or the other, the beach was full of trash (granted that is not the owner's fault). In addition the neighbor not only owns the side property but the property directly in front of the rental. Literally - there is no yard on the "beach" side. There is a very tall (8-10 ft.) white solid wall (she called it a security wall) which is right next to (meaning no separation) the rental. You don't see that in the advertisement. However, a few weeks before your trip, the owner sends a renter's manual with two pictures - one that shows no wall, and one that shows the wall. BIG DIFFERENCE. So, she was perfectly aware. Had she told me that earlier, I would have canceled. There was only access to the "beach" through a very narrow drain for run-off (maybe 2 feet wide where you walk). Not a walkway and not easy access - you are squeezing between fences. It is not as advertised, "beachfront home with crystal clear blue water steps from your front door where you can snorkel off the beach". The taxi boat could not even get close for us to load. We had to wade through the mud to his boat. It is not a safe place to stay. She said there is a security guard at night - he sits inside the "wall" on a hand-built stand. He sells drugs there. We saw many transactions. He would throw his trash (cans, etc.) on the ground inside the wall, which is what you see off your front porch. There was no safe to store items. She said a previous owner changed the code. Again, she knew this ahead of time but did not share. The generator sometimes worked. The house was not very clean (grease left in pans, dirty dishes, and one bedroom (bottom floor) was filthy. Her response to that was-you aren't using that room anyway. She did offer to send out a cleaner, but by that time, we had already washed the dishes and cleaned. The wifi also sometimes worked (she blamed that on someone else too). The refrigerator didn't work at the beginning. Took almost 2 days to cool it down. She had a "matter-of-fact" attitude, blaming the issues of a "third-world" country. I have stayed in Roatan before and many other third-world countries. I wish I could add pictures so you could see truth!

Most of our guests are excellent and happy with our home. We recently had one for 3 months who never complained once. If there was something he wanted, he contacted us. There are beautiful ocean views and sunsets. Wish we could post pictures of the water and beach. You can see the sand bars underwater most times. Sheri and her party of 6 were constantly complaining from the moment they arrived. They apparently wanted a luxury hotel in West Bay which is far more expensive, not a home on the beach in a neighborhood. They were paying $40/night per person. The cost at a high end hotel like Ibagari which is a Roatan luxury hotel, would have been $270 for per person per night minimum. It was hot (yes, Roatan is near the equator) but we do have working A/C in each room. They complained about bushes brushing them. Really, they did. They complained that the hood ornament was missing from our car. They complained about the beach because there is turtle grass, again part of the natural flora, protected by the marine park. They sent some pictures of a watery, sandy littered area on the beach but that was NOT from in front of our house. It was from another area, down the beach. Apparently, there was a storm and items washed up on the beach and down from the mountains. The beachfront changes with the rains, etc. BTW, the beach is owned and maintained by the municipal. They clean and move sand around periodically when necessary. There is NO mud, not possible on the beach, it is wet sand. Many other guests have take our kayaks out through the walkway daily, across the sand to go snorkeling or visit the nearby dolphin training area. We have no idea what she is talking about. Unfortunately, there were some issues during their stay. Below is a list along with our steps to remediate ASAP. We do want our guests to be happy and enjoy our home as we do so we respond to issues as quickly as possible. • The standby generator did not start. We are on the ocean and the battery corroded. We replaced the battery ASAP and the generator comes on automatically, we tested it ourselves when we arrived on Roatan and have had it completely serviced. There are only 2 people that can perform the service, it takes time to get them to show up. Fortunately, one is our next door neighbor who serviced it when he arrived from the mainland. • There was one room that they were not using that the cleaning people did not clean, unbeknownst to us. We were appalled that the cleaning person did not clean properly, apologized and offered to send the cleaning people back to redo the entire house at OUR cost but Sheri refused the offer. We have replaced the cleaning crew with someone who is attending to detail. The house was immaculate when we arrived in late July. We intend to keep it that way. • The freezer worked fine (even Sheri said so) but refrigerator was not cold because the prior cleaning people left the door ajar. After the door was closed, it cooled down by the next day, not days as she stated. It worked very well during our 3 week stay in July/August. • One of our prior guests apparently locked the safe key in the safe and did not give us the combination. The safe has to be replaced but there are none of that size in stock on the island. We will have our island manager keep trying. • The router totally malfunctioned late on a Friday night. That is why the internet had been spotty. We had it replaced on Monday, the next business day. That said, the internet/TV provider does not have a backup power supply. Our generator will keep the lights, A/C and router on but if the power goes out, the internet and TV will be out as well. This is not in our control. • We have bars around the first floor aka Bodega as many do on Roatan to prevent petty theft. We also have a security wall (again, many do to prevent petty theft), built after we purchased the property. They were sent a renter’s guide which both included pictures of the wall and a description. There is a guard at night, again for safety. He does not work for us but does help us and is kind to us. Gabriel, the guard, is a nice person, always laughing. Many of our guests have told us how much they like him. We communicate in our broken Spanish and he corrects us. We feed him sometimes and he brings us green coconuts from which we drink coconut water. We have NEVER seen him sell drugs over the wall and we come twice a year. The culture is different here so sometimes he is not careful with his soda cans. We ask him to clean up and he does it that day. No malintent, just cultural differences. A world traveler would know that. The security wall means you have to walk an extra few steps to get to the beach. There is still full, easy beach access. Somehow, the few extra steps made it “not a beach front home” to them though we are still on the beach with serene water views. The only thing between us and the water are palm trees planted by the municipal. Thus, it is a beach front home. No other guest has ever complained about the views or beach access. We are not sure why she said the house is not "safe". A guard, a security wall, motion activated spotlight security cameras. Or did she mean that she had to walk into the water to get on a water taxi and walking in the water was not safe?? We never said we had a dock, we never said you can beach a boat to board. Actually, we did have a dock years ago but the municipal took down. There are other docks nearby. If needed, we can try to get access but we cannot make any guarantees. . Overall, they seemed not to accept that Roatan, though a beautiful island with good people and great diving, is in developing country and sometimes things go wrong. They said they are world travelers but their complaints and expectations say otherwise. We are on the beach, salt water corrodes. Services are not always available on demand, not all services are up to par, people behave differently than they might in more developed countries. That is part of the charm of Roatan. Slow down, relax, enjoy the people, diving, beauty and the local flavor. We love being here and find it difficult to understand how anyone can be unhappy staying in our home with such beautiful views. We are having the house painted, repairs made, etc after we leave. We will have pictures taken afterwards and post them. If you are considering renting, ask us, we will send pictures of the beach, water, wall, etc. As a final arbiter, look at reviews from other renters here and on other rental sites. Judge for yourselves.

Roatan Adventure

It was a pleasant stay at the beautiful island of Roatan. We stayed at the pink house in Sandy Bay, which had plenty of room for me and my family. Everything from restaurants to entertainment was very close to the house. The view from the house to the water was spectacular. The only thing I would say is that when you come to Roatan and you rent a house be mindful of the cost of electricity is very expensive in Roatan but overall we had a great time. The communication with the owner of the house Tom and Gloria was very good. They were always very attentive to our needs.. Had a great time.

Great modern clean home in a awesome central location!!

My wife and I travelled with five of our six kids and a couple spouses. We found the home to very comfortable. The homes upgraded services ensured we were will looked after. The home had more cooking and eating supplies than expected. The home has AC units and portable fans for those who don’t enjoy AC. The windows seem to be new as well. Water system is great with lots of water and pressure. The owners have their property well set up including the following items. Chairs on the upper patio to enjoy the sunset. Several educational books and magazines including a book on marine life and Spanish for dummies. The marine book was always open as we excitedly discussed our snorkelling or diving finds. We also enjoyed playing the board games they provide. They have a Roatan island board game...lots of fun. As mentioned the home is in a great location. You can snorkel or fish anywhere along the beach in front of the home. We also rented the provided van which allowed us to make numerous day trips to popular attractions or beaches. The owners are great! They provide a renters guide of the house and island. This guide helped us make decisions on restaurants, attractions, snorkelling and diving. We found them very easy to partner with to allow us to enjoy our Roatan vacation. Eating on the island is also great. As mentioned, the home is well stocked. A brand new grocery store just opened a block away. We found the food affordable and delicious. We found the renters guide helpful and ate at several of the recommended locations. I felt the food was always fresh as it is made to order. Great home!! Great location!! Great owners!! Lots of fun things to see and do on the island!!

An authentic Caribbean experience

We had Roatan on our visit list forever, and renting a house is one of our favorite ways to see an island. First, the owners were fantastic: they emailed us with updates, answered questions, and even called us a couple nights before the trip to answer questions and give advice. The house was perfect for our group of seven: good kitchen, dining and living areas for gathering, and rooms with several bathrooms for space from the group. The top deck is excellent for sun, and the middle deck perfect for shade and sea breeze. The downsides of the house are the gate locks and the beach location (only reason this review isn't 5 stars) It is a waterfront house (gorgeous views) but I wouldn't call it a beachfront house as it is more hard packed dirt leading up to the water - not a place I would take beach chairs and sit (people drive this section of the beach). The gates accessing the house use a variety of keys (and the rusty locks take manipulation) - hopefully the owners will address in the future. We love the island (first visit) and found this house (and rental van) perfect for the location in the middle of island options. The house is in the middle of the town Sandy Bay - which has a large local population. the positive is that there are friendly people in every direction, local meals you can buy a couple houses down, and regular soccer games on the grounds by the water. Downside is the noise at night - lots of dogs barking and vehicles passing, but we just turned the TV on and drowned out the noise. Awesome central location. Several good beach bars a short drive away, and loads of activities a short drive or walk. Sol-y-mar (free entry on Sunday+blue octopus diving) a mile away; Anthony Key = museum, gift shop, and dolphin encounter half mile away; Blue Bahia beach bar 1 mile (Wed for lobster; Friday for burgers); Grocery store about 8 miles; West end (nice little beach, snorkeling, beach bars, shopping) 5 miles-park in the lot in front of medical building and pay the nice ladies at the house next to lot; West Bay Beach (awesome beach, beach bars, resorts, snorkeling) about 10 miles- we parked at the Mayan Princess paid $10 pp for access, pool, and beach chairs. Driving on the island is a fun adventure; main roads are improved but still narrow and full of pedestrians. Snorkeling awesome everywhere - took kayaks from shore 1/4 mile and snorkeling is pristine. Owners - thank you for sharing your home and quick repayment of deposit

Spacious and well equipped. The manager, Yvonne, was wonderful and helpful. Well located, near dive shops and west end. Car recommanded but taxis can be fine. No pool. The beach in front of the house is not nice but there are beautiful ones few minutes drive. Octopus dive school is nearby and has beautiful beach and super nice dives!

Thanks Annie, so glad you enjoyed your stay. So sorry about the beach, at times during rainy season the beach becomes difficult to use due to run off from the top of the island. Unfortunate, but not something we can control. We do our best to keep the beach clean and usable as possible. We hope to have you and your family as our guests again someday. Warm Regards, Gloria

NIce dive vacation in Sandy Bay, Roatan.

We stayed at Sandy Bottom Villa in Sandy BayRoatan from February 21st to March 7th 2019. We were a party of 7 adults for the 2 weeks, mostly for diving, with Sun Divers. Upon arrival at the airport we were greeted by Robert who arranged for transportation, using 2 vehicles as we were travelling a bit on the heavy side with the dive equipment and inflatable paddleboards! Robert was the perfect greeter and briefed us on all the things to do on Roatan, although this was our 4th time on the island, it was still thorough and informative. Robert and the second taxi took all the time necessary to stop for groceries at Eldon's on our way to the villa. Once at the villa Robert helped us get our luggage to the different rooms and showed us around the property in detail and even had many goodies(beer, wine, fruits...etc..) in the fridge, waiting for us...a good treat after hours of travel. We also paid Robert the rental for the van that is owned by the owners of the villa. A pretty good deal, since the van, a 7 passenger, was perfect for our group to go around and the cost was quite reasonable compared to other rental options. The house was just perfect for our group with a wide sitting areas in the living room equipped with TV , a large fully equipped kitchen, nothing was missing with a large fridge, just what a large group like ours needed! Also on the main floor is two bedrooms , one with en suite bathroom with another bathroom in the hallway close by. On the second level, there is one large bedroom with en suite bathroom and a loft area with large bed. From this area you had a large balcony to enjoy views of the sunsets and ocean. Very nice! On the lower floor. called bodega, is a outside sitting area with table , chairs , counter and BBQ propane grill. Also in the bodega area is an additional room with batroom and the laundry with washer and dryer. You could also park the car in this area. The villa was spotless when we arrived and everything in the villa worked flawlessly. You have the option of using the AC or ceiling fans, present in all areas of the house. For our stay, we used the AC mostly at night but in daytime we only used the fans. We appreciated the presence of a generator as power outages are frequent on Roatan. We used the access to the beach with the kayaks and the paddleboards for a nice stroll around the Anthony's Key Resort and check out the dolphins. The diving was done with Sun Divers out of West End and was a short

We're two couples (wives pictured) who bought this lovely home together to enjoy vacations and share it with others when we can't be in Roatan!

Why they chose this property

We bought this house because it's 100 steps from the beach--we can strap on our fins, grab a snorkel, and be right on the reef in short order. It's got a gourmet kitchen for cooking and entertaining. And with so many bedrooms, there's room to bring family and friends, with everyone having their own space as well as coming together for meals and play.

What makes this property unique

We're located steps from the water, a mile from the dolphins at Roatan Institute of Marine Sciences, and have several diving and sightseeing operations nearby so everything is convenient. We're a short drive or taxi ride from the restaurants and shopping of West End.
