Crooks Cottage (Dittisham) - sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms
Crooks Cottage is situated at the heart of the picture postcard riverside village of Dittisham. This 18th century fisherman's cottage has been beautifully renovated with all the homely luxuries you would expect while cleverly preserving its traditional character. The back garden is the perfect retreat for outdoor dining and enjoys outstanding views over the water. The Ferry Boat Inn and The Anchorstone Cafe are just a short stroll away right by the quayside where water sports enthusiasts can hire paddle boards and boats.
Accommodation:
From the entrance foyer with space for coats and boots, there's the stylish open-plan living space - a blend of modern-meets-retro with traditional cottage features. Two comfortable, contrasting sofas centre around the large log burner with its original stone hearth - perfect for snuggling up on those chillier winter evenings whilst watching a film on the wall mounted TV.
The chic dining table with white marble top and brushed gold legs with sumptuous velvet dining chairs comfortably seats four.
The well-equipped shaker-style kitchen has an oven and hob as well as a dishwasher, Nespresso Coffee Maker and toaster. Off the kitchen is the utility room where you will find the washing machine and tumble dryer, a small freezer, as well as the ground-floor WC. Access to the rear garden is also through this room.
Climb the stairs at the end of the day where you will find a choice of two bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom has a 6ft super king bed and a large wall-mounted TV. The twin bedroom has two single beds with wrought-iron bed frames, which can be configured as a superking bed, and a TV. The family bathroom includes a bath with an overhead shower.
Outside:
At the back of the cottage is the paved, suntrap, courtyard garden, with an outdoor dining area that looks out over the river. It's the perfect spot for your morning coffee or evening fizz.
Parking:
The property's location means there's no parking on site, although you can briefly pull up outside to load and unload. There are two car parks in the village - at The Ham and The Level - roughly 300m away (there is a steep hill up to ‘The Level' car park) or free on-street parking on Riverside Road.

Crooks cottage
This is our second time staying with dart valley cottages and again absolutely fantastic service. Crooks cottage is very sweet in a perfect location a stones throw from the pub and the cafe and the water . It’s tiny but got everything you need and amazing little garden out the back with view of the water. We loved our stay.
What a great place to stay; Crooks cottage has a fabulous location, beautiful views and was really well equipped with everything we needed. And Dart Valley Cottages are hands down the best holiday rental company we have ever used. Incredibly helpful, efficient and brilliant communication, I can't recommend them highly enough and we will be booking again. Many thanks for a wonderful stay

A little peace of heaven nestled in beautiful Devon.
What an amazing cottage. So beautifully decorated and equipped for our stay.
If you are looking for an escape from normality, Dittisham with no mobile signal is certainly the place to go. Crooks Cottage provided excellent WiFi to allow us to communicate when we needed to.

Excellent location, as was the quality of the furnishings/decor. Extremely well equipped as well.
Thoroughly enjoyed our short break (despite the indifferent weather) and our granddaughter loved the cottage too. Very thoughtful to provide crabbing buckets and lines and and the crabbing was the highlight of our stay. Nice touches with Easter decorations on the door and Easter Eggs in our welcome pack.
Would love to return in better weather and to be able to more enjoy the lovely outside space with stunning views.

Beautiful setting
A very clean, comfortable, well-equipped and well-positioned cottage in an idyllic setting. Loved the (dog secure) back garden with views over the Dart. Didn’t use the car all week. Lots of walking, ferry rides and pub meals. A great break. Thank you!

Quaint cottage in fabulous location
Crooks cottage is a lovely
Cosy cottage just seconds from beautiful Dittisham waterfront, with stunning views of the water from the garden terrace. The cottage had everything needed for a comfortable stay and the bed linen was superb quality! Only thing to consider is if you are tall (I’m 5 ‘ 9) you will find some of the doorways very low- I did bang my head on several occasions when I forgot to ‘duck’!

Wonderful location
The cottage is in an excellent position and the views from the garden are beautiful if a little marred by the severe overlooking.
Most things are provided but some of the furnishings are very tired…
The leather sofa is so worn that you almost sit on the floor as the cushions have absolutely no stuffing left.
The blind in the main bedroom has become unstrung so that it remains closed the whole time.

Disappointing stay at Crooks Cottage
Positive notes Crooks cottage is a tidy, clean cottage, and has everything you need and accommodated the dog with water bowls, bedding etc and a stable door to keep dogs safe in the utility area however sadly we found Crooks Cottage a disappointing stay firstly due to its size it felt slightly over cluttered, there was only 2 of us staying with our dog i cant imagine how it would feel accommodating more people.
The garden/patio area is overlooked by the next door neighbors kitchen windows and sadly had builders in renovating this property when we stayed so it was noisy with drilling and not private to sit out side until after the builders had left.
We where woken up at 7 am each morning by a van delivering supplies to the pub each morning leaving its engine running for about 15 mins, not the fault of Crooks cottage but the location to the pub either suits people or not and is something to be considered as can be noisy.
We have stayed in Dittisham several times before however due to its size, lack of privacy and location to the pub we will not be returning to Crooks Cottage.

Could be a real gem
This little cottage could be a little gem. But it isn’t. The outdoor area is a real jewel in the crown but unfortunately the area for sitting and lounging was covered in dog hair and could not be used. The whole reason for booking this place. Such a disappointment.
The bedrooms and beds and linen were nice and the shower and hot water good. The bedroom needs a privacy blind as the neighbours opposite look right in to the window from their outdoor sitting area. The sitting room - very dark and poor lighting and smelt very odd. We didn’t use it at all and we left a day early.
The location a stone’s throw from the river and Anchorstone Café is very special indeed. Crooks Cottage could also be very special but just missed in many ways.

Excellant weather that made our stay very good.
When first entering the cottage we were disappointed with the overall appearance of the lounge.
A very uncomfortable leather sofa.
We were happy with the kitchen and the bedrooms and bed linen.
The bathroom was a problem as the water from the bath was very slo running away, and the plug didn’t fit !
The house keeper came and changed the plug which was a little better but we had to clean away the ‘gunge’ that was stopping the water running away.
Also there were two dirty towels left from the previous customer on the back of the bedroom door.
Disappointed with a poor welcome basket but I suppose it didn’t advertise there would be one,
Because we had beautiful weather for the time of year made our stay of the view from the top patio very good.
We have noticed that the property is on the market so maybe the owners are letting it go a little.
Sorry about my comments but you have persisted in asking for them.

Nice but won’t return
Situated in a very quiet village, the cottage is at the bottom of a very steep hill. No parking and very difficult to access. Ceiling height is very low (including the shower) and the cottage is over multiple levels. It has been completely and sympathetically renovated. There is evidence of past issues with damp throughout with lots of dehumidifiers in each of the rooms. This was not a problem for us as we stayed during a dry period. Positives- comfortable, a good base if you have everything you need with you and don’t want to use the car, tvs with Netflix, lots of kitchen equipment including washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher, comfortable beds, good shower and lovely garden overlooking the river. . Negatives- access, parking, plumbing issues whilst we were. Cottage could do with a deep clean- lots of spider webs and little spiders, crumbs in cupboards, lots of dust in under bed storage drawers, towels left from previous people. I also felt it was very expensive and have stayed in far better places for less money (£750 for 3 nights). We won’t return but I’m sure many will. Top tips- order a food shop to be delivered to the house, download the RingGo parking app before you arrive, bring washing up liquid and kitchen essentials, oil etc.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased you liked the decor of the cottage, the owners have put huge amounts of effort into creating a comfortable stylish cottage situated minutes from the qua. It has the most stunning views over the estuary.
We do try and make it clear in the advert that there is no parking. Guests often comment how lovely it is to leave a car in the car park and then travel around by the many boats on offer at the Quay. The estuary is beautiful and a boat trip is a must. We will of course go back to our housekeeping team regarding the cobwebs. The cottage is cleaned throughout weekly so is normally spotless. We do ask all our guests to report any issues to us and if are more than happy to ask our teams to come back and rectify anything to ensure you stay is perfect. They were really sorry that they left a towel and that was an oversight. We do state that we leave washing up liquid and kitchen essentials, and could have contacted the housekeeper on its location if we had of known. We are always here to help. Thankfully the plumbing issue has now been resolved it was water running down the outside of the shower screen so we will look to see if that be prevented in the future. Best wishes

Short break
We stayed at Crooks cottage for 3 nights. We have stayed in Dittisham before so know the village and love the fact you do not have to get in the car till you leave. The cottage like a lot in the village is old and quirky. It has recently been refurbished and done very nicely. The bed was super comfy and very nice bed linen. The duvet was quite hot don't know if they swap to summer quilts in the warmer weather. A bit too many nik naks around on all surfaces which did get in the way in such a small cottage. I did end up putting a lot in the spare room as afraid I was going to knock something Also stuff on the stool in the lounge which would have been nice to use as a stool to put your feet up on. Huge TVs in bedrooms and lounge but all run on the internet so only able to get netflix and BBC i player some programmes were only available if you had a password we don't have netflix so don't have a password and was far too much of a rigmarole to sign up, terribly stressful if you just want to watch regular telly, also no radio and not easy to find it on the TV menu. Holiday homes need to have simple stuff that's easy for all to use so you don't spend half your holiday trying to work out everything and get completely stressed out. Kitchen was very well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer but didn't have a microwave could do with a small one perhaps in the utility. It was lovely to have the outside space with lovely views of the river and comfy seating. It was very quiet when we stayed but am sure in the height of summer when all cottages are occupied I would feel very overlooked. .

One of the best ever stays
One of the nest ever places we have stayed. Beautifully and sympathetically furnished stylishly appointed and making the most of space.
From the moment we stepped in we felt relaxed and the guidelines for usage were just that, sensible respectful and encouraging of a shared experience in a beautiful space.
We were a bit disrupted for 3 hours one morning with a workman coming in to lay a floor but I guess damage happens and needs repairing.
A lovely week's stay messing about on the river!

Gem in the heart of Dittisham
Wonderful renovation of a fisherman’s cottage with lovely outside space- everything well thought out and all home comforts, great WiFi , comfy sofas and an extremely equipped kitchen.Easy to pop to the FBI and the pontoon to watch all the action !
One small suggestion would be to put some under bed storage in the second bedroom- just a pull out drawer would be great to help organise luggage .
We would book this little gem again no question

Yet another wonderful stay
Wonderful location central to Dittisham.
Loved the Emma Shipley decor, felt we were living in someone’s home rather than a rental.
Only quibble was the dining table due to the base, quite small for 4 persons, however borrowed a table from friends in the village and problem solved.
Would rebook for next year definitely

Crooks Cottage
The cottage is well maintained and comfortable. It is important to know that the ceiling height in the living room and doorways are very low. The beds and sofas were extremely comfortable and the kitchen well equipped.
Excellent washing machine and dryer.
Lovely outside space despite being overlooked.
We found there was very little space to store our own things in the kitchen and some extra shelves would help. The cupboard for guests provisions was tiny.
We also found that many of the surfaces in the living room and bedroom had ornaments on them which we removed for fear of breakage and also as we needed to use the space.
We also found that the seating area in the sitting room for having meals was very difficult to sit around as we couldn't tuck our legs under the table.
Dart Valley cottages gave exceptional service when we had an unforseeable problem in the cottage at the beginning of our stay.

Relaxing holiday!
We spent a lovely week at Crooks Cottage in Dittisham, very much helped by the absolutely amazing weather for the entire week!
We have been coming to Dittisham for almost 15 years and have stayed in various properties; we found Crooks Cottage to be a beautiful cottage, very clean with a garden that had the most lovely views over the River Dart. It's a convenient cottage for all that Dittisham has to offer, especially being a stones throw from the fabulous Anchorstone Cafe, where we ate most days - either eating at the cafe, or taking advantage of their takeaway service. The FBI pub is also very close by - they are doing really delicious take away pizzas!
The cottage has pretty much everything you would need for a self-catering holiday, but we would have liked a cafetière rather than a coffee machine, which we just didn't get on with - maybe something to think about. We really appreciated the welcome basket, and the disposable BBQ - a lovely touch.
The one thing that would probably prevent us booking Crooks Cottage again was the extremely low head height of almost ALL the downstairs doorways. We really feel this should be pointed out in the description of the property, as it is in some other property descriptions. Both me and my daughter are 6 ft tall and we both hit our heads pretty hard on a couple of occasions when walking from the utility room & garden, back into the kitchen - this doorway is very low, and even my wife who is 5ft 5 hit her head once here! It's easy to forget to duck sometimes!

Perfect pink cottage
Crooks Cottage was lovely - great location. The garden was definitely the plus point with wonderful estuary views. A few comments - didn't realise there was no freezer, we were bringing frozen dog food so that's just a minor point. The main bedroom is lovely but gets very hot, an addition of a fan would be really welcome.
