About this property

The Munches Room at Buittle Castle, a Georgian Style Stay in a Medieval Castle

The Munches Room is carefully appointed in the Adam style, and connects guests to the Jacobite history of Buittle, former home of the Maxwells. The room is on the ground floor, with access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or American breakfast is included. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available. Please let us know of any dietary requirements ahead of time. We aim to offer guests a true country house experience.

As part of our effort to reduce our environmental impact, gourmet tea and coffee are provided by the house manager upon request.

The site which the present tower occupies was once the inner bailey of the medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's royal castles and twice capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorguilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original 13th Century keep into the present L-plan tower, c.1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings, remains very much a working building, and so retains the 'feel' that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th great grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working printing office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.

Review

I was made very welcome on arrival, with straightforward explanation regarding heating, breakfast order arrangements, the gardens etc. Breakfast served across the courtyard was lovely. It was also good to.meet the other guests there, and to.learn a little history of the castle directly from Tobias. I had little time to spend in the beautiful garden, as I had an evening engagement in Dumfries. However I enjoyed viewing it in the early morning from my window. I had a very comfortable stay and if I were in the area again it would be a great pleasure to return should the opportunity arise.

A Lovely Stay at Buittle Castle

What can I say - I had not heard of Buittle Castle but my wife and I were looking for a place to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary near Castle Douglas and the castle came up as an option on an internet search. An absolutely lovely setting in the countryside near Dalbeattie. We stayed in the Munches Room which was unbelievably cosy, even as the temperature dropped below freezing in the evening. The private dining experience in the Great Hall was likewise incredible. It is possible to walk along the riverbank and enjoy the gardens - we made a point of using the hot tub also the following morning as our host Tobias had graciously made this available, which was itself a lovely experience in the early morning light. The access road is definitely easier to navigate if driven from the Dalbeattie side, but there is an HGV turning point just past the castle which allows drivers to turn around and access the road to the castle with ease if coming from Castle Douglas. I cannot recommend Buittle Castle highly enough and my wife and I cannot wait to return.

We really enjoyed staying in the unique rooms. It was quiet, the room was spacious, and the breakfast was delicious. The medieval building is secluded and has a special flair, both inside and out. The owner is approachable and helpful.

A fabulous stay in a unique location

My parter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this fabulous little castle. Our room’s decor was beautiful and the bed very comfy. Breakfast was served in the grand hall which was extra special, and the breakfast itself was delicious. The gardens are stunning and there are plenty of seating areas, plus a short circular walk around the gardens and along the river. The owner Tobias was there to greet us and told us all about the fascinating history of the castle. The area itself is lovely and we visited Castle Douglas, Kippford and Mabie Forest.

Everything we expected

The stay here was everything we expected. The only issue was the weather but not much that could be done about that. The dinner was lovely and good value for money.
