Historical

These vacation rental apartments are in Jerome Wheeler’s carriage house built in 1888.

A second cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jerome Byron Wheeler served during the Civil War, surviving to marry Harriet Macy Valentine (whose family founded Macy’s department store) in 1870. By 1879 he had become the president and a major shareholder of R. H. Macy and Company after the deaths of both its male heirs.

In 1882, Wheeler and his wife visited Colorado, seeking relief for Harriet’s severe bronchitis. They visited Manitou Springs, as it was famous for its mineral waters. In 1883, they built a summer home here, naming it ‘Windemere.’ This sat where the Post Office is currently located.

Soon, Wheeler began hearing reports of silver strikes in Aspen, and he purchased interests in promising mines. Although his time at New York City's most prosperous department store produced years of record sales and profits, Jerome Wheeler’s ambitions were shifting toward Colorado. Wheeler left his position and sold his shares in Macy’s in 1888.

Wheeler became involved in numerous mining ventures in Leadville and Aspen. He organized the Aspen Smelting Company, and built a mountain tramway to bring ore down the mountain to the smelter. He was president of the Croseus Gold Mining and Milling Company, as well as the Rock Hill Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company in Leadville. He was a partner in a marble quarry, and was president of the Grand River Coal and Coke Company. Before long, he was phenomenally wealthy.

He built two of downtown Aspen's landmarks; the Wheeler Opera House and the Hotel Jerome, putting nearly one million dollars in each. These are both thriving today. He built the first bank in Aspen, as well as a large residence, but never lived in the home. Known as the Wheeler-Stallard House, it currently serves as home to the Aspen Historical Society.

All told, he invested nearly $6 million into developing Aspen, and is remembered fondly as an icon there as a result.

Jerome Wheeler became a director of the Colorado Midland Railroad when it was organized in 1885, and brought rail connections to both Aspen and Manitou Springs. He and Colorado Springs railroad tycoon James John Hagerman invested over $100,000 in the extension of the Colorado Midland Railroad to the western slope, the first standard gauge railroad to cross the Continental Divide. Some of the rail beds and tunnels for this railroad can still be seen in various places around town and along US-24 west of Manitou Springs.

He started the Manitou Mineral Water Company, which was very popular back east and was even served at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

He invested in the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, a cog railway that still transports passengers to the top of Pikes Peak.

As he had in Aspen, Wheeler also built the first bank in Manitou Springs, the Wheeler Bank. This yellow brick building sits at the east end of downtown.

Downtown sits a triangle of land with the clock donated by Wheeler to the town. His wife had been intrigued by a similar clock in Italy, so he spent $3600 to provide one for Manitou Springs.

In 1892, Wheeler became embroiled in the first of a series of lengthy and costly lawsuits over one of his silver mines. The combination of the judgments and the Panic of 1893, resulting in the crash of the value of silver, cost Jerome Wheeler nearly his entire fortune.

Wheeler's mining company laid off all its employees. His banks failed and closed for two years, but Wheeler paid his depositors every dollar and they lost nothing.

Manitou Springs continued to benefit from Wheeler’s largess, even after his fortunes had dwindled. He contributed $50,000 toward the construction of Manitou Avenue and outfitted a volunteer fire company. In 1913, after a devastating flood, he gave $10,000 to the city for emergency repairs.

Jerome Wheeler spent most of his remaining years at Windemere until his death on December 1, 1918.

New York. Aspen. Manitou Springs.

Jerome Wheeler was successful wherever he went, and he and Harriet certainly could have lived wherever they desired. But ultimately, they chose Manitou Springs as their home. Come to Manitou Springs and see what they discovered. This is a great place to be.

History of Windemere

Jerome Wheeler’s Windemere estate in Manitou Springs included an elaborate conservatory, this carriage house, billiard rooms and two bowling alleys. Roses for the Cliff House Hotel were grown in the conservatory and placed on guest's pillows each night.

After the death of the Wheelers (Harriet died in 1916), the estate was sold off, and the Wheeler residence was demolished for a hotel. The post office was built on the site in 1940.

The carriage house was divided into seven apartments about 100 years ago. The building fell vacant in the 1980's. We purchased the building in 1993 with the intention of developing it into a bed and breakfast. Ultimately, due to the constraints of time, money, full-time jobs, and kids to raise, the bed and breakfast was never realized. As they say, "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans."

Come see why this property has now reached its highest and best use, over 135 years in the making. We think Jerome Wheeler would be pleased with what has become of his carriage house.

Walk to everything in Manitou Springs

If you want to hang out in Manitou Springs proper, this is the place to stay. It’s also very close to the other major attractions in the area, such as Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds and Pikes Peak. Very clean and accommodating. Maybe the best part is sitting on the balcony and listening to the symphony playing in the park across the street. Highly recommended!

Beautiful house and location

My third time staying at the Carriage House. Soda Springs Park is right in front of the house and Manitou Springs shops and restaurants--and Miramont Castle--are in walking distance right down the street. Other area attractions are a short drive away. The Carriage House is absolutely beautiful and comfortable, and I can't wait for my next stay!

Another great stay!

This property is amazing! The beds are the most comfortable I have ever slept on. They have everything you need to feel at home, and it is within walking distance of the shops and restaurants. I have stayed twice at this property and have several more stays booked, because I work part time in Manitou.

Carriage House

this VRBO is very nice, quiet, and close to all attractions in downtown Manitou. The kitchen is very well stocked with extras that most VRBO's don't include. The queen bed was very comfortable and a fan provided for those hot nights. The owners are very nice and greeted us upon arrival. They live just upstairs and wanted to make sure that we knew we could contact them at anytime. We will definitely return on further visits to Manitou.

Excellent Vacation

The Carriage House West was a lovely unit -- clean and comfortable. Such a great touch having a personal greeting on the fridge on arrival. We had everything we needed. My Godson loved the park and creek just across the street and he especially loved the penny arcade just a couple of blocks away! I really enjoyed having shops and restaurants just steps away after a day of adventure and exploring. Also, laundry is included in the unit. More than one night there was live music in the park and we could just sit on the balcony and enjoy. Having a parking spot is key in Manitou. Figured out quickly how to negotiate the driveway (decided to back it in rather than park head on). Communication with the hosts was great before and upon arrival. I would definitely consider staying at the Carriage House again and would highly recommended.

Heavenly Bliss

My daughter lives in Wyoming & I live in Eastern New Mexico. Her birthday was coming up & so we decided to meet in Manitou Springs for a long Birthday weekend. Tim & Kris's Carriage House is by far one of the best places I have ever stayed! They not only patiently took my numerous phone calls to help me find their place, they were there to greet me, help with my luggage, and answer any questions I had. As soon as I walked in I felt a peace and comfort that you usually don't find when you are staying on someone else's property. Big comfortable king size bed, wonderful shower, amazing kitchen with everything that we could possibly need and a balcony that overlooks a park with the river/stream running through it. We were within walking distance of numerous little shops and lots of places to eat. Thank you Tim & Kris, I can't wait to come back & stay with you again.

2nd Floor, West Unit

We stayed a few days in the Carriage House West Unit. The unit was clean and cozy with a very comfortable bed. It is the perfect location and was already stocked with everything we needed. Staying in the Carriage House, it is obvious that the owners take pride in the place and give it proper care and attention. The parking was a little tricky to find, but once found, I was able to squeeze in my oversize truck to the carport. The entrance near the carport made unpacking and packing a breeze. The owner Tim came to help unload and give us the run-down on the unit upon our arrival. He was readily available, but not obtrusive. The only issue we had is that there is a unit below(on the 1st floor) and the owners live above on the third floor. We have a toddler who isn't always an angel, so we were a little concerned that he might be bothering the neighbors or owners. If he did, nobody complained about it. Also, we were never bothered by outside noise, even with temporary construction going on a couple blocks away. I would recommend the Carriage House to anybody looking to be close to Colorado Springs attractions and walking distance to the unique shopping experience in Manitou Springs. The Carriage House has classic charm with an updated romantic cozy feel to it. It was perfect for us and we would like to go back next year if welcomed. Hopefully the little one will be a little more mature by then.

Location is excellent! The bed is very comfy..nice sheets and great bath towels and VERY clean. The jacuzzi is wonderful. INCREDIBLY well stocked. Tim and Kris care that you have everything you need.If you have a lot of toiletries suggest you organize so you can hang them. There are lots hooks; limited counter space around the BR sink.Really appreciated the w/d - VERY quiet. The parking spot takes a bit of practice, howevere a great plus to have a private spot in Manitou Springs. Wi-Fi is EXCELLENT.

Totally enjoyed our stay at the Carriage House! Loved having coffee & wine on the balcony and watching the world go by below, people walking dogs and babies playing in the park. The location was perfect for walking to restaurants and shopping. Will definitely return! Might beware of parking if you have a larger vehicle. We were in a full size Suburban and had difficulty parking in the designated area, but owner did have a residential parking permit for us to use to park on the street. Thank you!
Beautiful architecture! Actually had three apartments. Met some very nice people!
Shotgun layout. Very comfortable and clean. Enjoyed the beautiful French doors and transoms to add lots of light.
Best bed ever! Sooo comfortable!
Parking area has steep descent. A bit cramped for larger vehicles.

Fla escapees

The drive in makes you think you are in the wrong place since you really are entering the back of the house, which is not that nice and borders a lot where people are smoking. Since the listing pic shows the house facing the street behind where you enter it is a bit deceptive since you expect to drive up to that property but you only see that view from the street if you walk there The house was very clean. The location is good as you can walk to the Main Street in manitou pretty easily. Not much flexibility in changing dates
