About the host
Hosted by Larry and Beverly Maxwell
The Maxwell family has called this property home for more than 46 years. What was once a wild, thorn-covered piece of land has slowly been transformed into the property we’re blessed to enjoy today.
Much of that transformation began with Larry’s father, Rupert Maxwell, a WWII P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilot who was shot down over Germany and spent a year as a prisoner of war. Rupert passed down many things to his family, including his love for the Lord, his love for this land, and an appreciation for the hard work it takes to care for both.
Larry and Rupert built both houses on the property, along with the barn, and their handiwork is woven into the story of this place.
Today, Larry and Beverly are avid outdoors people. We love to hunt and fish, hike, garden, cook, make soap, read, sit beside the river, and spend quiet evenings swinging on the porch. In a world that seems to move faster every day, we’re grateful for this little piece of land where we can slow down and enjoy the simple things.
Coming from a military family, Larry has lived in several places, while Beverly grew up in Michigan. Together, we have four grown children and eight grandchildren, who add even more joy to our lives.
We’re pretty laid-back folks who love our quiet corner of the world. We recognize that this homestead is a gift from God, and we’d love to share a little piece of it with you.
So, welcome to our little corner of the world. Pull up a chair, stay awhile, and enjoy the view.
Why they chose this property
This property is secluded enough to be a peaceful haven and yet not too far from amenities. We love it!
What makes this property unique
One of the things we hear most often from people who visit is, “It’s so beautiful and peaceful. You are so blessed to live here. We don't want to leave. Can you adopt us?”
Our little corner of the Sequatchie Valley is rich with history. This land was once home to Cherokee people before their forced removal along the Trail of Tears. The Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park is right next door and also home to the grave of the first Sheriff of Cumberland County, adding another layer of history to this special place. The Devil Step Hollow cave is a must-see and a short walk from the cottage.
The head of the Sequatchie River begins at the State park next door, flowing right through our property. On a hot summer day, there’s nothing quite like sitting beside it or dipping your feet into the cool water.
And then there’s the wildlife. Deer wander through regularly, along with turkey, fox, coyote, bobcat, and numerous birds. You never quite know what you might see.
Beauty seems to abound in this valley nestled between the mountains. But you have to slow down to notice it. Sit quietly for a while. Wander with a curious eye. Listen to the birds. Watch the river. Look closely at the things growing and moving around you. If you do, you may find that this little piece of the world has a way of making everything else fade into the background for a while.
We feel incredibly blessed to call this place home, and we love sharing a little glimpse of it with you.
