The cottage is ideally located for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. There are numerous riverside and forest walks starting out and returning to the town, some from the doorstep of the cottage. With an endless variety of hill, coastal and forest walks within a short drive. New Galloway golf course is about ½ a mile from the cottage and there are numerous other courses within easy reach. If you would like more of a test or challenge the championship courses at Ayr and Southerness are within easy driving distance.
Situated on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, Britain’s original Dark Sky Park offers plentiful opportunities for stargazing; The Forestry Commission 7Stanes Mountain Bike routes are located throughout the area with the nearest one being at Kirroughtree with trails suitable for all abilities. The Raiders Road, a scenic forest drive is open from Easter until October allows plenty of opportunities to explore the forest with a stop at the Otter Pool a must for a paddle and a picnic or a BBQ. Nearby Loch Ken is a busy water sports destination with sailing, canoeing, and other water and land based activities available at Galloway Activity Centre. For the fishermen (and women) course fishing is available on Loch Ken (permits can be purchased locally) with other Lochs within easy reach. River and sea fishing is also available within a few minutes’ drive.
Wildlife abounds with the Red Kite Trail giving superb opportunities for watching Red Kites and other birds. There are also numerous National Trust and Historic Scotland sites worth exploring including Threave Castle near Castle Douglas and Broughton House in Kirkcudbright. Kirkcudbright itself is a bustling harbour town with strong connections to the Art World through the Glasgow Boys. The busy market town of Castle Douglas is also within easy reach with a good variety of specialist independent local shops, restaurants and cafes. It also offers a swimming pool, 18 hole golf course and the Fullerton Theatre which also doubles as a cinema.
