Bait-and-Switch Scam
It was a classic bait-and-switch scam. We had booked the deluxe suite which, per the description and photos from the listing, came equipped with a king-sized bed, sectional, swivel chair, and a kitchen with ample dining space. It had been described as the “ultimate luxurious hotel experience.” However, upon arrival, we were given a standard room which was less than half the size of the one we booked – had a queen-sized bed, no sectional, no swivel, no kitchen, and no space for anything but sleeping. We complained at the front desk and were informed that the deluxe suite (the room we paid for) was unavailable, despite us having booked it in advance. The clerk working the front desk told us that the manager would be in the next day at 7am, so we could stay in our room for the night and then speak with him in the morning. We were exhausted after having just traveled 10 hours, so we agreed to stay in the room we were given and return to the front desk in the morning. Unfortunately, the manager was not there in the morning. The staff did agree to move us to the deluxe studio, which was much nicer than the room we had been given, but still not the room we booked. I inquired about a discount and was told I had to speak with the manager – who still had not showed up. Again, we were paying for the best room available, but were staying in inferior rooms which should have been cheaper. I left my phone number with the front desk and they assured me the manager would call me when he arrived. The manager never called me and, each time I visited the front desk, they told me the discount could not be applied without the manager’s approval. I continued trying to contact the manager throughout our stay, and kept stopping by the front desk, and he never showed up. Thus a significant portion of my vacation had now been taken up by dealing with the hotel. There was also construction on the building and scaffolding outside the window, which would be fine, but our curtains did not close completely. When my wife got out of the shower, there was a construction worker with his head in the window. Additionally, despite there being several electrical outlets in the room, only one of them worked. This made it difficult for my wife and I to charge our phones and electronics, as we could only charge one device at a time. It was just a very unpleasant situation, and these were other negative aspects of our stay. Overall, it was a terrible experience.
