There are plenty of riverside and woodland walks nearby which continue into the wonderful countryside beyond. One of the most popular walks is Wainwright’s Coast to Coast, which passes through Richmond taking you through some breathtaking countryside with amazing views.

To enjoy the wider area, visit one of the many pretty Yorkshire towns or villages, such as Thirsk, Ripon, Harrogate, Leyburn, Hawes, or Reeth, all of which are close by. With the opportunity to watch the horse racing at Catterick, or enjoy a day or two fishing in Catterick (12 acres of water set in a beautiful setting of 75 acres of peace and tranquility with four specimen carp lakes and a 1.5-mile stretch of the beautiful River Swale). Further away is the cathedral city of Durham is just over half an hour away, and is certainly worth a day trip to explore, as is the historic Barnard Castle and Bowes museum.

This was our 3rd year in a row in Richmond but the 1st time staying at Brittain House.

This was our 3rd year in a row in Richmond but the 1st time staying at Brittain House. We were not disappointed. The house was spacious, well equipped, clean and warm and in a great spot to access Richmond marketplace. We used the week to do some walks in the Dales, with Reeth, Muker and Leyburn in easy reach by car. The only negative is that we were two families staying and therefore had 2 cars. As the house only provides 1 space and add the adjacent street is time restricted during 8 till 6 we had to park one car at the pay and display car park near The Green. This is not too inconvenient but does incur additional charges. Nonetheless, this was a great house and I would stay again.
